The day of Aisha's first photography class finally arrived. She was both excited and nervous as she walked to the community center, her camera bag slung over her shoulder. The streets were lively as usual, but today, Aisha's thoughts were entirely focused on the class ahead.
When she reached the community center, she was greeted by Fatima, who gave her a warm smile. "The girls are very excited to meet you, Aisha. They've been talking about the photography class all week," Fatima said, leading her to the small room where the class would be held.
Aisha stepped into the room and saw a group of about ten girls, all between the ages of 12 and 18, sitting on simple wooden benches. They looked up at her with curious eyes, some smiling shyly, others chatting excitedly among themselves. Aisha felt a surge of responsibility; these girls were counting on her to teach them something new, something that could change their perspective on the world.
"Assalamualaikum, everyone," Aisha greeted them warmly. "I'm Aisha, and I'm here to share with you what I know about photography. But more importantly, I want us to learn together how to see the world through a different lens."
The girls responded with a chorus of "Walaikum Assalam" and a few eager smiles. Aisha began by showing them her camera, explaining its basic functions. She passed it around, letting each girl hold it and get a feel for how it worked. For many of them, it was the first time they had ever touched a camera.
As she demonstrated how to take simple pictures, Aisha encouraged the girls to think about what they wanted to capture. "Photography isn't just about taking pictures," she explained. "It's about telling a story, sharing a moment, and showing others how you see the world."
The girls were attentive, their interest growing with every new thing they learned. Some of them began asking questions—how to frame a shot, how to capture light, and how to take a good picture even with a simple camera. Aisha answered each question patiently, thrilled to see their enthusiasm.
After the basic lesson, Aisha handed out small, disposable cameras that Fatima had managed to obtain for the class. The girls were overjoyed, each one eager to start experimenting with their new skill.
"Let's go outside and try taking some pictures," Aisha suggested. The girls eagerly agreed, and they all filed out of the room, their cameras in hand.
Outside, the girls began to explore their surroundings with fresh eyes. They photographed the street vendors, the children playing nearby, and even the simple beauty of a tree standing tall against the sky. Aisha walked among them, offering tips and encouragement, but mostly letting them discover the joy of photography on their own.
As the afternoon passed, the girls started to see the world in a new way, just as Aisha had hoped. They were no longer just passersby in their own neighborhood; they were photographers, capturing moments that had always been there but were now seen through a creative lens.
When the class ended, the girls were reluctant to leave, already asking when the next session would be. Aisha promised to return the following week, and the girls left with smiles on their faces and cameras in their hands, excited to keep practicing.
As Aisha walked home, she felt a deep sense of fulfillment. She had shared something precious with these girls—a way to express themselves and see the world differently and in doing so, she felt she had taken one step closer to her own dreams.
Aisha knew that this was just the beginning. There were many more lessons to teach, and much more to learn. But for now, she was content, knowing that she had made a difference, however small, in the lives of these young girls.
