Jason immediately ran to the back of the modified RV, looked back through the firing port, and saw some shadows moving vaguely at the far end of the road in the distance.
A convoy!
Are they the Saviors?
Judging by the current situation, there was a high probability the Saviors would catch up with them.
Seeing this, Jason knew he couldn't let it continue like this.
With that in mind, Jason made a decision and ordered, "Slow down, we have to intercept the enemy."
After giving the first order, Jason said, "Zz... Victor, drive the trucks forward; you need to be ahead of the Humvees so they can avoid enemy fire. As long as everyone stays in the vehicles, nothing will happen."
Victor's voice came back over the intercom soon. "Boss, should we wait for them up front?"
"No need; you know the route — we marked it on the maps. If we handle this quickly, we can catch them in a short time."
"Understood, Commander. Make sure you stay safe!"
As George reduced speed and the two Humvees slowed, the dozen trucks ahead gradually pulled away, while the distance to the enemy became clearer.
"Sasha, come with me to the roof — you're on sniper duty. T-Dog, you're on the machine gun. Glenn, you and the men below shoot out the windows. Follow my orders and fire only when commanded."
"Zz... Teams One and Two, align in front of the modified RV. I don't want the enemy to see our full strike capability."
"Zz... Roger, we'll attack on command."
"Understood!"
A dozen people took their positions. The advantage of repeatedly modifying the RV was that it had strong defensive capabilities and enough firing ports to produce an unrivaled level of firepower.
Jason made sure to call Sasha to the upper firing port; both of them carried sniper rifles. What they could see in the distance were only the outlines of a few vehicles — they couldn't clearly make out any people.
Trusting his instincts, Jason fired first at the driver's seat of the lead car without hesitation.
Bang!
The lead car wobbled slightly, but it didn't stop. Seeing this, Jason knew the shot must have missed, but he didn't care and kept firing.
This time he aimed for one of the car's tires. The shot rang out and the car suddenly veered to one side. The tire had blown, and the speeding car soon careened off to the side of the road.
Boom!
The front of the car smashed into a tree, and the first car behind it was taken out.
Behind it was a pickup truck that seemed to understand Jason's intent; the car suddenly swerved aside, braked, and a truck from behind rushed forward, then the car's body veered off.
Jason deduced that someone important on the other side must be sitting in that car, and he regretted not taking that opportunity — but that thought was fleeting, because the distance between the two sides had already reached firing range.
Still, Jason didn't want a direct confrontation with his enemy. Not here, not with his current men. He just kept watching the long enemy convoy; there shouldn't have been fewer than two hundred people. His conjecture felt right — stopping now could be a huge problem. What he had to do was give this engagement everything he had and inflict heavy losses on the opponent.
Only when the wounds truly hurt would they think about surrendering.
With that in mind, he shouted to the few men below waiting for orders.
"Fire! I don't care where you hit — make sure you eliminate or stop the enemy!"
Bang Bang Bang!
"Zz... Now, attack!"
Jason's convoy opened fire first, and with the RV's speed, it would be only a matter of time before the enemy caught up. So before that happened, they had to do everything they could to damage the enemy.
The windshield of the lead truck shattered instantly under the intense fire. The driver inside could only lie down under the seat to avoid the bullets, while Jason saw an opportunity and fired.
Bang! Boom!
Accompanied by a heavy explosion, the truck's tires were blown out. Because it was a dual-wheel axle, the truck wasn't immediately immobilized.
Before Jason could continue firing, the convoy behind accelerated and closed in again; now the distance between the two sides was barely more than a hundred meters.
"George, can you go faster?"
"Captain, we can't go any faster than this!"
"You have to knock them off if they get beside us!"
"Understood!"
By then, several enemy vehicles had already been completely destroyed. Numerous people lay dead and the gunfire showed no sign of stopping.
In short, the situation at the rear changed again. Another truck closed in from behind. At that moment, two vehicles were driving side by side on the two-lane road.
The weapons in their hands began to spit bullets, and a metallic sound rang against the armor behind the RV.
Jason reached out and tore open the RV's rooftop hatch. T-Dog on the roof was ready. Long ammunition belts were threaded from the ammo box. The whole heavy machine gun now protruded from the modified RV.
The driver of the truck behind slowly looked up at the RV's roof; the light was much brighter now and the gap narrowed, allowing him to clearly see the exaggerated barrel of the M2 heavy machine gun. He was frightened, he began to shake, cold sweat broke out on his brow, and he instinctively wanted to hit the brakes.
But T-Dog didn't give him the chance. The machine gun — which hadn't been used since they left — finally unleashed its first roar against the Saviors!
Bang Bang Bang Bang!
At the same time, the Humvees also showed their true firepower and began firing continuous rounds.
The sudden, overwhelming firepower completely took out the two rear trucks. The huge rounds shredded their armor to pieces. The driver's body was blown apart by the large-caliber rounds.
Even the people in the cargo compartments suffered grievous wounds — the heavy rounds penetrated the not-very-thick bodywork of the front vehicle and tore through the rear compartment.
The Saviors' initial bravado turned into fear. Those in the first rows began to slow down; everyone was falling back, trying to escape that devastating kill zone.
Those nearest screamed in terror before being cut down by the continuous bursts; there was no chance to escape the destructive power of a heavy machine gun.
A few who realized the danger screamed frantically, but they found they could do little and raised their weapons.
Bang Bang Bang Bang!
After killing several people who blocked the road, the enemy finally realized something was terribly wrong. Some people in the back thought they had been betrayed. Just as they were about to draw their weapons to retaliate, they watched their comrades' bodies torn apart. Splinters and a spray of blood splashed into the driver's cabin, sobering everyone.
No one hesitated any longer; they scrambled and jumped out of the back of the truck. The vehicles behind, seeing people leap out and run, assumed they had been betrayed.
Under an angry shout from a man, bursts of gunfire erupted from the rear vehicle — those who had just jumped out were cut down by allied fire before they had time to rejoice at their escape.
In the rear pickup, Mays grabbed his weapon and yelled to the driver, "Drive forward and stop the enemy."
Simon, in the back seat of the car, noticed something was wrong. He rolled down the window and immediately heard a muffled crack. The sound of the rounds was familiar to him.
Heavy machine gun!
The enemy has several heavy machine guns.
Simon's first thought was how powerful this enemy must be, but then he thought pursuing them would be a waste of manpower. Even if he didn't care about these people's lives, this looked like an opportunity!
"Boss, there are heavy machine guns on the other side — let's stop pursuing them. If we keep chasing, we'll all die."
"Shut up! These bastards will die by my hands! What if everyone dies? I can still gather another group of strong people!"
Simon and the driver exchanged looks, both reading different meanings in one another's eyes.
At that moment, a truck up front had already overturned into a ditch beside the road, and another truck had slowed down, but it hadn't yet escaped the fate of being crushed.
The vehicles behind had already realized something was wrong and began to reduce speed. But in that moment, several cars were shredded by enemy gunfire.
At that moment, Mays' roar came over everyone's intercom.
"Damn bastard, keep moving. Do you want to die?"
Crack!
At that exact instant, the sound of choking came over the radio.
"H-heh-uh."
"Zz... This is Simon. Everyone listen to my orders — stop chasing those people! Stop chasing or we'll all die!"
