Chapter 142 - Avatar: Four Leaf Manifestation

Chapter 138:

The food warehouse stretched beneath the night sky, its roof a flat expanse of reinforced metal that gleamed dully in the starlight.

Austin and Kaya moved across it like shadows given form, their footsteps silent and their mana signatures compressed to points so small that even the most sensitive detection spells would register nothing but empty air.

They had entered the warehouse through the undercarriage of a transport car and slipped away from the main floor before any of the guards had noticed the disruption in the routine.

Their bombs had been planted at the structural weak points the support beams near the eastern wall, the coolant systems that kept the perishable supplies from spoiling, the junction where the main gas line fed into the building's heating array.

Each charge had been placed with the same meticulous care that Lucas and Ethan had employed in the weapons warehouse, hidden in shadows where no patrol would think to look.

Now they were at the roof's edge, ready to jump.

"The charges are set," Kaya said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We should be clear before they detonate."

Austin nodded, his eyes already fixed on the treeline beyond the depot's perimeter.

They would jump together and disappear into the forest, and by the time the bombs activated, they would be kilometers away.

They never got the chance.

The explosion came from inside the warehouse not from their charges, but from something else, something that ripped through the eastern section of the building with a roar that shattered the night's silence.

Austin felt the shockwave travel up through the roof, felt the metal beneath his feet shudder and warp. Flames licked at the edges of the hole that had been torn in the ceiling, orange and hungry.

Kaya's white eyes went wide. "That was not one of ours."

"No," Austin said. "It was not."

They had both spoken before they could stop themselves, and in the chaos of the explosion, no one should have heard them. But someone had been waiting for exactly this moment.

The figure appeared at the edge of the roof like a piece of the darkness detaching itself from the night.

He wore a black outfit that covered him from head to toe, and his mask bore a symbol that neither Austin nor Kaya had seen in person but both recognized immediately from their mission briefings: the mark of the Hidden City of Sand.

[Wind Spell: Gale Burst]

The compressed air struck them before they could react, a hammer of wind that slammed into their bodies and tore them from the roof's edge.

Austin felt the world spin around him as he was thrown backward through the hole in the ceiling, and he heard Kaya cry out beside him as she fell.

They landed hard on the warehouse floor, their bodies absorbing the impact with the trained reflexes of elite cultivators.

Austin rolled to his feet, his hand already reaching for Emberclaw, and Kaya rose beside him with lightning crackling across her skin.

The warehouse was filled with elites.

A hundred cultivators, all of them drawn by the explosion, all of them now staring at the two intruders who had fallen from the ceiling.

Their mana flared in unison, a hundred signatures rising from Four Star to Seven Star strength, and Austin felt the weight of their combined presence press down on him like a physical force.

Kaya moved closer to him, her back pressing against his. "There are too many."

Austin did not answer. His mind was racing through the possibilities, calculating the odds, searching for a way out that did not end with both of them dead on the warehouse floor.

There were Seven Stars among the enemies surrounding them elites whose combat power matched or exceeded his own.

Even if he used every technique he possessed, even if he fought with everything he had, the numbers were against them.

Kaya would die. He would die. The mission would fail.

He thought about what Lucas had said to him beneath the twisted pine tree. About finding people worth fighting beside.

About pushing forward toward what you wanted to create in the world. About the world being fair to those who wanted it most and who were willing to do the work.

Then he sighed, and his eyes began to change.

The three black leaves that had always spun in his red irises shifted, multiplied, and became four.

The transformation was instant and absolute, and the mana that erupted from his body was not the familiar heat of his fire spells but something deeper, something older, something that had been waiting inside him since the day he was born.

[Avatar: Four Leaf Manifestation]

A figure formed around him—a giant of purple light and purple flame that rose from his body like a second skin expanding outward.

It was not flesh and not spirit but something between the two, a construct of pure ocular power given shape by the Clover Eyes that marked him as one of the rarest cultivators in the history of the Hidden City of Sky.

The purple flames roared outward in all directions, consuming the space around him without burning it, and the elites who had been advancing toward him stopped in their tracks.

Kaya stared at the purple giant that now surrounded Austin's body. She had heard the rumors, as everyone has had heard the rumors. But she had never seen it with her own eyes.

Austin reached out with the Avatar's arm and pulled Kaya close, holding her against his chest within the protective shell of purple light.

"Hold on," he said.

She wrapped her arms around him.

Austin raised his hand, and the Avatar's hand rose with it. He triggered the bombs with a pulse of mana every charge they had planted, every explosive rune they had pressed against the support beams and the gas lines and the coolant systems.

The warehouse answered with a chain of detonations that began at the eastern wall and spread inward like fire racing across dry grass.
