The casual tone was gone again.
There was something strangely confident about the way he said it, as though the matter had never been in doubt.
Liam's mind immediately went back to the city gate.
The guard.
That strange look.
At the time, Liam had noticed it but hadn't thought much about it. The guard had stared at him for a little longer than necessary, and there had been something almost like recognition in his eyes.
Liam had assumed it was simply because of his appearance or the fact that they were outsiders.
Now he wasn't so sure.
"The guard."
The dwarf smiled.
"Yes."
Liam's eyes narrowed.
"That guard who looked at me strangely."
"Yes."
"You know him."
"I do."
The dwarf took a drink from his pouch.
Then he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
"He belongs to me."
Silence.
Liam stared at him.
The realization settled slowly.
The moment they had arrived at the city, someone had already known they were coming.
