Chapter 47 - chapter 47

The Thin File and the Quiet Night

Liam sat at his mahogany desk, the manila folder from the L'Etoile manager looking pitifully thin against the backdrop of his multi-billion naira spreadsheets. He flipped it open, his eyes hungrily scanning the sparse lines of text. Eliana Vance. Age: 23. Education: A partially completed degree in Biochemistry from the University of Lagos—interrupted two years ago for "personal reasons." Next of Kin: Tobi Vance (Brother). Address: A tenement building in a district so far from Victoria Island it might as well have been another planet.

There was nothing in the file about the hospital bills, the oxygen tanks, or the desperate nights at the Night Rose. To the restaurant, she was just a reliable worker who never complained. To the world, she was a statistic. But to Liam, the "interrupted degree" spoke volumes. He saw the shadow of a sacrifice in the white spaces of the document. He closed the folder, his jaw tightening. He didn't just want her name anymore; he wanted the story behind the silence in her eyes.

"Sir, the car is ready for your dinner at The Glasshouse," a junior driver announced, standing tentatively at the door.

Liam nodded, checking his watch. David had requested the evening off to visit his mother, Sarah, at the Sterling mansion. Usually, Liam would have felt the absence of his confidant, but tonight, the solitude was welcome. He needed to think without David's knowing smirk reflecting in the rearview mirror. As the sleek black sedan pulled away from the Sterling Tower, Liam stared at the bustling streets of Lagos, feeling a strange pull toward the district where Eliana lived. He was a man who could buy any building in the city, yet he felt like a trespasser in her world.

Meanwhile, at the Sterling mansion, David sat in the small, cozy kitchen of the staff quarters, sipping a cup of tea his mother had prepared. Sarah watched him with a mother's intuition, her eyes sharp despite the fatigue of the day.

"He's different, isn't he, David?" Sarah asked softly, nodding toward the main house where Sandra was likely plotting her next move. "Liam. He's... elsewhere."

David sighed, the steam from the tea fogging his glasses. "He's chasing a ghost, Ma. A girl who works two jobs and wears a mask to keep her head above water. He thinks he's being 'efficient,' but I've never seen him this reckless. He's going to get his heart broken, or worse, he's going to break hers by trying to 'save' her."

Sarah looked out the window toward the West Wing. "In this house, hearts are broken every day for the sake of a bank balance. Maybe a little bit of 'reckless' is exactly what Liam needs to survive the vipers in the parlor." She lowered her voice, her expression turning grave. "Be careful, son. Sandra isn't just a spoiled girl. I saw a man leaving the library tonight—someone who didn't belong here. There are shadows moving in this house that Liam isn't looking at because he's too busy looking for wealth"
