Chapter Twenty-Nine: Whispers and Shadows
The office was unusually tense the next day. Lu Xiao could feel it the moment she stepped through the doors—stares that lingered too long, hushed conversations that fell silent when she passed.
At first, she told herself she was imagining it. But when she overheard two junior staff whispering near the copy machine, her heart sank.
"Did you see them leave together last night?" one said.
"I'm telling you, something's going on," the other replied. "Why else would the boss keep her so close?"
Lu Xiao's face flushed hot. She turned sharply and walked away before they noticed her, but their words clung to her like thorns.
By the time she reached her desk, her hands were trembling. She tried to bury herself in the day's tasks, but every laugh, every side glance felt like another dagger.

When Lei Han arrived, the tension only grew. He was as composed as ever, commanding the room effortlessly during the morning meeting. But Lu Xiao noticed the subtle shifts—the way people's eyes darted between the two of them, the way the atmosphere thickened whenever he addressed her directly.
After the meeting, she retreated to her office, shutting the door behind her. She had just begun to collect herself when it opened again, and Lei Han stepped inside.
"Something's wrong," he said immediately, reading her face.
"I'm fine," she lied, keeping her eyes on her desk.
He crossed the room and placed a folder down in front of her, forcing her to look up. His gaze was steady, unwavering. "Don't do that. Don't shut me out."
Her throat tightened. "People are talking."
For the first time, his expression faltered, his jaw tightening. "What are they saying?"
"That I… that we…" She swallowed hard. "That I'm only here because of you. That I've—" Her voice broke, and she looked away.
Lei Han's hands clenched at his sides. "Nonsense," he said sharply. "You earned your place here. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool."
"They don't see it that way," she whispered. "To them, I'm just another woman who—"
"Enough," he interrupted, his voice low but firm. He leaned closer, his eyes burning with intensity. "Do you think I care what they say? Do you think I'll let their lies dictate what happens between us?"
Her chest rose and fell with uneven breaths. "It's not just about you. I have my siblings. My reputation. If this turns into a scandal—"
"I'll protect you," he said without hesitation.
The certainty in his voice made her heart ache. He believed every word, but could she?
---
The rest of the day passed in strained silence between them. Lei Han was careful to keep his distance in public, but his eyes sought hers whenever they crossed paths.
By evening, Lu Xiao was exhausted. She gathered her things and slipped out of the building, hoping to avoid more whispers. But as she walked toward the subway, she heard footsteps behind her.
"Lu Xiao."
She turned to see Lei Han, his expression unreadable.
"You shouldn't be walking alone this late," he said.
"I've done it for years," she replied softly.
He stepped closer, his presence towering over her. "Not anymore. Not when people are watching."
Her chest tightened. "That's exactly the problem. If anyone sees us—"
"Let them," he interrupted, his voice sharp but filled with something deeper—something possessive, protective.
She shook her head, torn between fear and longing. "Why do you make everything so complicated?"
He reached out then, his fingers brushing her arm, sending a shiver through her. "Because I can't pretend anymore," he whispered. "I see you everywhere, even when you're not near me. And the more you try to run, the more I want to pull you back."
Her breath caught, her heart pounding wildly. His face was so close now, his eyes dark with emotion. For a moment, the world around them fell away, and there was only him—only the dangerous pull between them.
She wanted to step back, to protect herself. But her body betrayed her, leaning ever so slightly toward him.
"Lei Han…" she breathed, her voice trembling.
His gaze flickered to her lips, and his restraint cracked. He leaned in, slow but certain, until their breaths mingled in the cool night air.
But just as their lips were about to meet, a shout broke the moment.
"Boss! Sir!"
They froze, snapping their heads toward the sound. One of Lei Han's drivers was hurrying toward them, bowing respectfully. "The car is ready."
The spell shattered. Lu Xiao stepped back quickly, her face burning. Lei Han's jaw tightened, frustration flashing in his eyes.
Without another word, he gestured for her to follow him to the car. She hesitated, then reluctantly did. The ride home was silent, charged with the weight of what almost happened.
And when she stepped out of the car and closed the door behind her, her lips still tingled with the memory of a kiss that hadn't quite been stolen.
