Chapter 138 - Doctor Octavius Emerges

The hum of machinery echoed through the lab as Gwen Stacy stepped inside, the familiar rush of cool, sterile air washing over her. She adjusted her bag over her shoulder, her eyes immediately drawn to the fusion reactor sitting in the center of the room—its core dormant for now, but glowing faintly with potential. Potential to change the world—or destroy it.

She found Dr. Octavia "Vee" Octavius hunched over the control panel, her curly hair pinned back in a loose bun, though strands had already fallen free. She was muttering to herself, her dark eyes sharp, but tired, her lab coat speckled with grease and faint burns from weeks of pushing the limits of what was possible.

Peter Parker was there too, already fidgeting nervously near a set of cables, clearly trying not to break anything for once.

"Parker, if you trip over a wire and blow us all up, I'm haunting you," Gwen called out, smirking.

Peter shot her a look. "Not my fault this place is a death trap."

"Only if you're clumsy," Vee cut in, her tone sharper than usual, but there was a trace of humor beneath it. "Morning, Gwen."

"Morning," Gwen said, moving beside her, her eyes flicking to the reactor core. "Everything still holding steady?"

"For now," Vee said, tapping a few keys. "But we're getting close. I can feel it. Today's going to be important."

That last part made Gwen's stomach tighten.

Vee had always been passionate, but lately, it had started to blur into something else—obsession.

Before she could dwell on it, the doors slid open again, and Wanda Maximoff entered, her crimson jacket draped over a sleek black outfit that hugged her figure perfectly. Her eyes scanned the room, but Gwen caught the faint flicker of red just beneath her irises—chaos energy simmering just beneath her calm exterior.

"Good. You're all here," Wanda said, her Sokovian accent soft, but commanding. "Let's see this future you're building, Vee."

Vee's expression shifted into a grin—but there was tension beneath it.

"We're close," Vee said, stepping away from the console and moving toward a sealed containment chamber at the back of the lab. "But handling this core when we bring it fully online… that's going to take more than human reflexes."

She pressed a few buttons, and the chamber opened with a hiss of steam, revealing what lay inside.

Four sleek, metallic arms hung from an assembly frame—sleek black with silver accents, their segmented design resembling something almost organic. They glistened under the lab lights, and small red sensor lights blinked along their joints like eyes.

Peter took a step back. "Okay… I know I joke a lot, but… does anyone else see Dr. Octopus right now, or is it just me?"

Gwen snorted. "You said it, not me."

Vee chuckled, but there was tension in her voice. "They're a tool. That's it. Precision control units—designed to interface with my spinal cord so I can manage the reactor's core up close during the activation phase."

Wanda stepped closer, her eyes narrowing.

"These are… advanced."

Too advanced, Gwen thought, but she kept that to herself.

Vee nodded quickly, defensive. "I had some… external input. Designs that pushed the boundary a little."

Wanda's gaze sharpened.

"Whose input?"

Vee hesitated for half a second. "Private funding, remember? They wanted progress. I delivered."

That answer didn't sit right with Wanda or Gwen, but neither pushed—not yet.

Fracture stirred beneath Wanda's skin, a tendril slithering over her shoulder, forming a partial head with gleaming slits where eyes would be.

Its voice slid into Wanda's ear, though it remained low enough for only her to hear.

**"This technology is touched by more than genius,"** Fracture whispered. **"Someone is shaping her path. Another hand is guiding this."**

Wanda didn't react outwardly, but inside, her mind tightened like a vice.

She had suspected it, but hearing Fracture confirm it made it real.

Vee suited up, attaching the interface harness to her back, and the arms extended, locking into place with a series of mechanical clicks.

The moment they connected, Vee's expression shifted—her grin sharpened, her posture stiffened, and for a brief second, Gwen thought she saw something dark flash behind her eyes.

The arms moved with fluid grace, like an extension of her body, reaching across the lab to lift a heavy stabilization unit near the reactor.

It was impressive—frighteningly so.

Peter muttered under his breath. "Okay… that's cool but terrifying."

Gwen couldn't help but agree.

"That's… a lot of power, Vee."

Vee's smile was tight.

"It's what we need. For the future."

Wanda watched everything closely, but her eyes weren't on the arms—they were on Vee.

The way she carried herself. The way her fingers twitched even when the arms were still—as though they were whispering to her.

Fracture whispered again.

*?"It has begun. The strings are already wrapped around her mind. Soon, she wont know where she ends and they begin."**

After the test, Vee removed the arms, but she was breathing heavier than she should have been, her hand lingering on the connection point on her spine.

Wanda approached her, voice softer this time.

"You're pushing hard."

Vee gave a breathy laugh.

"That's what progress is. You know that."

Gwen forced a smile, but her gut was twisting.

They were walking a line now—a thin one.

As they packed up for the day, Gwen and Wanda lingered behind as Peter left.

Gwen glanced at Wanda.

"She's changing. Those arms… they're not just a tool. They're doing something to her they are influencing her."

Wanda nodded, her eyes faintly red again.

"I know. We need to stay close. Guide her—before someone else does."

Fracture's tendril brushed Wanda's neck lightly.

**"She is slipping into their grasp. You must decide soon… will you pull her back? Or let her fall?"**

Wanda's jaw tightened.

"I'll pull her back but obsession is rarely dealt with so easily perhaps to rise she must first fall."

Gwen touched Wanda's hand.

"We'll do it together no matter what we will find a way to break Vee's obsession."
