The steady hum of the fusion reactor filled the lab with a faint vibration as Gwen Stacy typed away at the console, inputting today's calibration adjustments. The soft glow from the core bathed her in an almost ethereal light—it was beautiful and terrifying all at once.
Dr. Octavia "Vee" Octavius stood nearby, her curly hair pinned up haphazardly, with a streak of grease on her cheek. Her lab coat hung open over a faded vintage tee, and her dark eyes gleamed with the same intensity Gwen had come to expect.
Vee thrived in chaos; she wore it like armor.
Peter Parker hovered nervously near a control panel, clearly trying not to touch anything after the previous day's wiring disaster. He had spilled half a cup of coffee on the console that morning, and Vee's only response had been a maniacal laugh, which hadn't exactly put Gwen at ease.
"Alright," Vee announced, wiping her hands on her coat. "We're running the magnetic field containment check. If this works, we're one step closer to stabilizing the core for full fusion."
Peter cleared his throat nervously.
"And if it doesn't?"
Vee grinned, eyes glinting with excitement.
"We glow in the dark. Permanently."
Gwen shot him a smirk.
"Relax, Parker. Only the weak fear radioactive superpowers."
Peter muttered, arms crossed.
"That's easy for you to say. You already got the good good genetics."
Vee chuckled, clearly enjoying their banter. But Gwen noticed the way her fingers trembled—just slightly—as she adjusted the reactor's control dial.
Even Vee's not as confident as she looks… Gwen thought, filing that observation away.
The hum of the reactor intensified. Gwen's eyes flicked between the temperature readout, the magnetic containment levels, and the glowing core at the center of the room.
5%. 10%. 15%.
The readings held steady.
For the first time since she'd joined the project, Gwen allowed herself to believe.
"This… This is the future, Gwen," Vee whispered, her eyes wide, voice trembling with awe. "We're not just making energy—we're creating power. Power that will decide who holds the future."
Gwen froze.
That last part.
Power that will decide who holds the future.
It wasn't just scientific ambition—it was ownership.
Who controlled the power? Who decided who deserved it?
Gwen's smile wavered as she watched Vee's eyes linger on the glowing core, like it was a deity granting her favor.
Peter clapped softly.
"No explosions? Hey, progress!"
Gwen forced her smirk back.
"Don't jinx it, Parker."
But inside, her chest tightened.
Later that evening, Gwen returned to Stark Tower, sinking into the couch next to Wanda Maximoff, who was nursing a glass of Sokovian wine while reading data on her tablet.
Wanda glanced up.
"You look like you discovered the meaning of life… or saw Parker break another machine."
Gwen chuckled, though it was forced.
"We stabilized the field. It's working. But… there's something about the way Vee talks about it. Like she's not just building a power source. She's building a crown."
Wanda raised an eyebrow.
"You're worried she's losing perspective?"
Gwen nodded.
"She's brilliant. But if this falls into the wrong hands—Kingpin, HYDRA, hell, anyone—it's not going to power cities. It's going to destroy them."
Wanda leaned in, her voice soft but certain.
"That's exactly why we need to guide it. Guide her."
Gwen's eyes searched Wanda's face.
"You think she can be trusted?"
Wanda's fingers traced the rim of her glass, her gaze distant for a moment, then sharp.
"I think she can be guided. Shaped. People can change, Gwen. Even the ones who start out on the edge."
Gwen breathed out slowly. She wanted to believe that. Wanda made it sound so… possible.
Before Gwen could respond, black tendrils slithered out from Wanda's shoulder, forming a slick, fluid shape beside her head. A vague face formed—sleek, alien-like, with smooth ridges where a mouth should be and faint slits resembling eyes. It hovered close to Wanda's ear, like a devil and angel wrapped into one, but its presence radiated calm, ancient wisdom beneath the predatory tone.
Fracture spoke, her voice like silk wrapped around steel, low and resonant, carrying an otherworldly edge: **"Wanda… You are fulfilling your destiny. You are shaping the future of your homeland—and those around you. Bringing Vee into the fold is part of that future."**
Wanda tilted her head slightly, not startled—she had grown used to Fracture's emergence.
**"She's dangerous, Fracture. She could destroy everything."**
Fracture's mouth shifted slightly, a smile that wasn't quite there. **"All power is dangerous. But power… guided by compassion… by redemption… can reshape the world. Even those who flirt with destruction can be saved. Even those who fall… can rise."**
Gwen leaned in, her voice quieter.
"You think she can be redeemed?"
Fracture turned her "face" toward Gwen, the liquid skin rippling softly.
"Haven't you both already proven that? That even those who carry burdens… can find light? Remember this—especially in the days to come. Redemption is a choice. Offer it."
The tendrils slowly retracted, sliding back into Wanda's skin, leaving only the faintest shimmer where they had been.
After Fracture's departure, Gwen turned to Wanda, her lingering concerns now tempered by trust.
"I believe in you," Gwen said firmly. "If you think Vee can be someone better—someone for Sokovia—I'll support you. We'll do this together."
Wanda's lips curled into a gentle smile, relief washing over her. "Together."
Their fingers intertwined, grounding them—partners not just in love, but in the pursuit of something greater.
That night, as Wanda stood at the window, watching the city glow, she could see Sokovia in her mind—not the broken nation it had been, but a beacon of power and progress.
And Gwen sat behind her, watching Wanda not with doubt—but with pride and trust.
