I think that thing is a mark created by past civilizations for each soldier, used to distribute treasures from the Underground Maze.
Perhaps they would brand such a special mark on soldiers who perform well or poorly, so the Underground Maze or Treasure Box could recognize it and distribute rewards more 'reliably.'
Maybe that design did not work well and was quickly abandoned.
Perhaps the flaws in this reward distribution method were too many, and such numbers could be inherited by the next generation.
As for the claim that luck affects reality...
