The Looming Shadows
"Master..." Sheron said with a slight bow.
The man sitting on the luxurious seat raised his gaze slowly, the shadows of the place casting solemnity and prestige, as he asked in a calm tone that carried a clear weight if he had met Seraphin.
"Yes, Master."
"And how did the meeting go then?"
"It went well. I don't think he will oppose us; rather, he seems ready to help us. But he warned me not to underestimate Kaiden."
The man laughed a little, then said with disdain, "Ah... do not worry. Kaiden is but a young boy of twenty. No matter how much he pretends to be wise, he will not notice what we are doing. We have been planning for years, while he is still learning how to steady his feet."
Sheron went silent for a moment, then said in a hesitant tone, "In fact, I did not come to speak to you about Seraphin only, Master... The deal has been spoiled. The Emperor's soldiers raided the site, and one of our secret headquarters in the Kingdom of Fiore has been closed."
Silence suddenly fell, then the man rose slowly from his seat, saying with a muffled sharpness, "What?! You mean Kaiden has already started moving? Couldn't you bribe the soldiers as before?"
"Unfortunately, no. These soldiers are not like others. They are from the rebels who marched with him until he reached power. Loyal, unbought, serious in executing his orders."
The man struck the desk surface with his fist forcefully, then muttered angrily, "Who would have thought Kaiden would be capable of all this... and with such speed? While he occupies people with his speeches and reforms, he plays in the dark skillfully. It is time for us to join that game." He turned suddenly to Sheron, his eyes glinting with cunning. "Sheron... it is time to expand our game. Go to the Kingdom of Endland. Open a new channel for smuggling there, and harness one of the corrupt nobles for our benefit. I do not want our revenues to be cut off again. And if one of Kaiden's men approaches that land... let the truth be buried with him."
Cheron bowed again and said in a steady voice, "As you command, Master." The man returned to his seat, lit a small candle, and whispered to himself, "Kaiden... it is fine, play your way. But remember, I am the one who writes the events of the game, and the rest are just players in it."
The Grand Union
Two months after their departure from the Kingdom of Peace, the long-awaited day arrived... Kaiden's wedding day. Everything seemed different, as if time had granted them a moment of calm after the storms. It was not just a royal wedding; it was a declaration of a new era led by a noble young man who began his journey between pain, sincerity, and the pursuit of justice.
The Imperial capital was decorated in white and gold. Flags were raised, windows were adorned with flowers, and people gathered from all four kingdoms: Fiore, Genoa, Andorra, and Endland. It was the wedding day of Emperor Kaiden Brian to the noble lady, Fionaria. In the outer palace square, Kaiden stood in his white attire embroidered with silver threads, while Fionaria held his arm in a pure white gown flowing like a sea wave.
Eugene, standing in the first row, whispered jokingly that he should have worn something better so as not to look like just a follower. Auri, one of the female commanders, told him he looked wonderful and suggested he start searching for a bride if he envied Kaiden. Eugene laughed, pointing at the Emperor, and promised he would marry after him, though the party might not be this size.
In another part of the celebration, Olivia jumped among the guests, joking and hugging. She stood before Fionaria, whispering with a voice full of love, "Please, take care of him. Kaiden does not know how to take care of himself when he is occupied with justice."
"I will... a sister's promise," Fionaria replied, holding her hands and smiling.
Olivia turned toward her brother as a tear fell. "Kaiden... you were only my brother, and now you have become my Emperor."
Kaiden wiped her tear. "And you will remain the light I look to when the darkness intensifies."
At that moment, Freeze entered the hall with a beautiful woman and a young boy who resembled him. Silence prevailed; no one had ever seen him laugh. A soldier whispered in shock, wondering if Freeze was actually married and human. Freeze approached Kaiden and bowed respectfully, shaking his hand warmly.
"You do not rule by the sword only, but by mercy as well... that is why this day deserves to be immortalized," Freeze said.
Kaiden laughed. "And you, Freeze... you hid your marriage from everyone?"
"My sword used to protect me... and today, my family does," Freeze said, looking at his son. The child asked shyly if this was the Emperor, and Freeze told him yes, and that they must be like him. Kaiden leaned to the child and whispered, "Remember, heroes are not born in palaces only... but in the hearts of brave little ones."
In a touching moment, Kaiden's father appeared, standing with features full of regret. He approached his son, shook his hand affectionately, and pulled him into a long embrace. Albert said with a trembling voice, "... I was wrong when I thought that firmness alone was enough. True strength... is in loving sincerely."
"Your presence here today is all I wished for, Father... and I forgave you even before you apologized," Kaiden said with a warm smile.
Before the lights dimmed, Kaiden's eyes suddenly stopped. There, among the guests, he saw William. He was standing at a distance, solitary, clapping quietly with a smile of pride. Kaiden froze. He no longer heard the music or the laughter. He knew it was a vision, that William was gone, but his heart refused to believe. A hot tear descended on his cheek. He raised his hand slowly and pointed to him, like a child who finally found the one he was looking for. "I needed you..." his eyes said.
And in a moment, he disappeared.
"Kaiden?" Fiona's delicate voice came near. She looked at him with concern, noticing his tears. "Who were you looking at?"
He went silent, then smiled a slight smile tinged with sadness. "At someone... who should have been here."
Fiona held his hand gently. "He sees you... and he is proud of you."
"I know," Kaiden said, looking at her and squeezing her hand.
With the end of the party, Kaiden sat beside Eugene in a corner and laughed. "Tell me, when is your turn? We need another holiday!"
"When I meet someone who can tolerate my volatile mood!" Eugene replied with a smile.
"I think you have found her already, haven't you?" Kaiden asked.
"Yes, things are going as they should. And my decision was clear."
"I knew you would reach this decision," Kaiden said.
"The time has come, and I am ready for what is next," Eugene said with optimism. Kaiden told him he would no doubt be happy and warned him not to make her wait too long.
Eugene confirmed he wouldn't. From afar, Fionaria smiled and told them they were not fit to be leaders, and Olivia added that they were friends one never tires of.
Midnight Reflection
In the Emperor's Suite, moonlight seeped through the white curtains. Kaiden stood before the mirror, taking off the last piece of his uniform. Fionaria watched him from the bed with a mischievous smile. "Is the Emperor tired of standing on his feet all day? Or from the abundance of artificial smiles?"
"The most dangerous thing I faced today... was smiling at all those lords who wanted to kill me last year," Kaiden said, smiling back.
"That is worse than any battle, undoubtedly,"
Fionaria said, approaching him and placing a hand on his shoulder. "But you were very handsome. So much that I thought for a moment... is this man really mine alone?"
Kaiden laughed lightly. "And did you think for a moment that I don't ask the same question?" He turned suddenly and held her hands. "How did you become this strong, Fionaria? You were a girl who couldn't stand the cold, and now you stand like a queen."
"Do not forget that I am the one who taught you how to sleep early in the forest, when you were tossing and grumbling like a small child," she said jokingly.
"Oh... let's not remind people of that!" Kaiden laughed.
Fionaria smiled with soft cunning. "No one knows these details... but me, and I will make sure it remains a secret between us."
Kaiden smiled, held her face tenderly, and kissed her. "I am lucky with you, more than I can describe."
"And I am proud of you... you have always been the man I believed in, and you will always remain so," she said softly.
They lay together under the white cover, hands intertwined. Kaiden looked at her with a wide smile. "Do you believe that we are here now? After all these years, we are here... and you are my queen now."
"I think I knew this day would come... but now, I cannot believe it actually happened! This night was more beautiful than I imagined," Fionaria whispered.
Kaiden laughed. "I think I will not need any other birthday... this night was all the gifts together."
"I think you've started to understand that there are many surprises on the way!" she teased.
"If every day with you means moments like these, I need nothing else," Kaiden said with love. Then they sank into a quiet sleep, a shared dream finally realized.
The First Morning and New Horizons
On a soft morning, sunlight shone on the silk curtains. Kaiden was woken by a sweet voice. "Good morning, you lazy sleeper." He opened his eyes to see Fionaria smiling, in a simple white dress, with a tray of breakfast she had prepared herself.
"I thought the one who prepares the food is Margaret, not the Empress herself," Kaiden said with a faint smile.
Fionaria laughed. "Today only... I wanted this day to be an exception. For not every day do we celebrate our first morning as a couple."
He looked at her for a long time, heart full of gratitude, and kissed her hand. Suddenly, Margaret entered with a smile, noting that someone had stolen her task. She reminded Fionaria that the tea party organized by her old friends would start in an hour. Fionaria's eyes widened. "Ah, I almost forgot! Thank you, Margaret!" She kissed Kaiden on the forehead. "I will return quickly... do not mess around in my absence."
"Only if you promise me that every morning will be an exception," Kaiden laughed.
An hour later, Fionaria reached the eastern garden. There stood Myra, Clara, and Eleonora. Myra shouted and ran to hug her, followed by the rest. They sat around the table and exchanged memories of picking jasmine flowers and Myra wearing different shoes. Fionaria felt like time had returned.
They raised their cups for love and the days to come.
"Life must have changed a lot now... you have become beside the Emperor himself!" Sophia said.
"Life hasn't changed... I have only become more aware of my duties," Fionaria replied calmly. "Being an Empress does not mean only wearing crowns, but being the companion who steadies the Emperor when the wind leans him." Laila asked how she saw Kaiden's rule, and Fionaria replied with pride that he was a brave ruler with a pure heart, and her role was to remind him that mercy strengthens a ruler. Rosalia clapped, saying if all women ruled with this awareness, injustice would disappear.
Sophia then asked how she met the Emperor. Fionaria smiled shyly. "The truth... I have known him for a long time, since our days in the academy. He wasn't an Emperor then... he was just a young man carrying ideas larger than his age."
"Wait... do you mean Kaiden Brian? The boy who used to sit in the front row?" Rosalia asked in surprise.
Fionaria laughed. "Yes, him exactly. He hasn't changed much, he still keeps the same look, but it has become deeper and more responsible." Eleonora was shocked, remembering how he bothered them with his sharp opinions. Sophia laughed about his debate with the philosophy professor.
"That day specifically, I knew he wouldn't be an ordinary person," Fionaria said with pride.
"Only now do I feel reassurance... as long as the one who rules us is Kaiden, we will not fear for our future," Rosalia said. Fionaria raised her cup, stating that as long as women like them were behind him, he would never be let down.
The Celine Conference
A week later, while Kaiden was contemplating maps, a chamberlain entered with a letter from the Great Celine Empire, inviting them to a Peace Conference in Lustera. The Celine Empire had been a closed state in the past. In the throne room, Fionaria sat beside Kaiden and asked if he would go alone.
"I wanted to spare you the trouble of long travel... three months are not easy," Kaiden said.
Fionaria placed her hand on his. "I am your wife... and your companion in rule. What weighs on your shoulders concerns me, and what concerns you, I walk with it. I will be by your side... there, as I was here."
"Then... let's go together," Kaiden smiled.
After three months, Lustera appeared—a luxurious city of white stones. People crowded to watch them, but eyes did not leave Fionaria in her dark blue gown. A guard whispered that she resembled the queens of light from old stories. They were received by Empress Aurelia, who noted that beside Kaiden was a jewel of great beauty. Fionaria bowed gracefully, saying a woman beside a just ruler gains light from his justice. Aurelia admired her reply.
During the meeting days, Fionaria observed silently. Aurelia noted her pure mind in politics, and Fionaria replied that politics was the responsibility to protect those who have no voice. Fionaria became the focus of the Celine Council. After weeks, a charter of friendship was signed. On the last night, Kaiden and Fionaria stood on the balcony.
"We have changed something here... maybe not big, but it is a beginning," she said.
"With your presence, every beginning becomes a strong beginning," Kaiden said, pulling her to him.
The Desert Kingdom
The morning was calm when they returned to the capital. "The Emperor has returned! The Empress has returned!" children cheered. Meanwhile, in the heart of the south, in Rajahan, Emperor Rachel Dara sat in his throne hall. Prince Uruk Daja entered and bowed.
"Did you see him? That new Emperor?" Rachel asked.
"I saw in him more than just a ruler. I saw a project of a different era," Uruk replied with confidence.
"Those who extend their hand with sincerity... their number has decreased in this world,"
Rachel said. Uruk suggested that between them was a road not yet paved, and Rachel rose, saying they would be the first to cross it. He ordered an official invitation be sent and for Kaiden to be received publicly. "He who fears being seen while receiving an ally... will one day be seen while surrendering to an enemy," Rachel declared.
In Kaiden's palace, the envoy of Kalahar entered and delivered the invitation to build an era of cooperation. Kaiden opened the letter and told the envoy he would think about departing soon.
