Gladion watched as Mystique struggled on the battlefield. Her healing moves had been blocked effectively by Sabrina's strategies. He knew that continuing with her in this state would not help. It was time to make a change. He raised his pokeball and called out to his Pokemon.
"Come back Mystique and rest up for now," Gladion said firmly.
In his mind, he thought carefully about his decision. 'While she won't be able to use healing moves even after, she would actually be able to heal naturally so I think it is better to let her rest for now.' He believed that giving her time outside the battle would allow her body to recover on its own. Natural healing might take longer, but it was safer given the situation.
With a quick motion, he threw out his next pokeball.
"Let's go Eldergreen," he called.
A huge Tropius burst out onto the field. The ground shook under the weight of the massive Pokemon as it landed with a heavy thud. Eldergreen stood tall like a living tree, its large wings spread out and its body covered in green leaves and fruits.
It looked powerful and ready for action. On the other side, the tiny Espeon stood defiantly. But even as it tried to look brave, its body trembled slightly from the earthquake caused by Tropius's arrival.
Sabrina did not waste any time. She gave her command with confidence.
"Baton pass," she said.
Espeon's eyes glowed brightly as it activated the move. In a flash, it returned to its pokeball, and another Pokemon took its place. Xatu appeared on the field. The psychic and flying type bird Pokemon looked calm and focused as it faced the much larger opponent.
The two flying types faced each other. One was as big as a large banyan tree, while the other looked like a small plant bird in comparison. They stared at each other for a moment before both took to the skies.
Their wings beat strongly, lifting them high above the battlefield. The crowd watched in excitement as the aerial battle began.
Gladion gave his first order without hesitation.
"Leaf storm," he commanded.
Eldergreen responded immediately. A huge tornado made of sharp leaves erupted from Tropius and rushed toward Xatu. The spinning leaves created a powerful vortex that cut through the air with great force.
Sabrina stayed calm and issued her counter.
"Psychic," she ordered.
Xatu's eyes glowed with psychic energy. It used its telekinesis to grab hold of the incoming leaf storm. With great control, it redirected the entire tornado to the side. The leaves spun away harmlessly and crashed into the ground far from their target.
Gladion did not stop there. He quickly followed up with another command.
"Gust," he said.
Tropius beat its large wings and sent powerful winds blasting toward Xatu. The smaller Pokemon tried to dodge by moving quickly in the air. However, the gust was too strong and wide. Xatu got caught in the powerful wind currents and was pushed around.
Sabrina saw the danger and tried to create an escape.
"Teleport," she commanded.
Xatu began to teleport away to a safer distance. But just as it reappeared a little further, its eyes widened in surprise. Tropius had already appeared above it in a flash of speed. The big Pokemon had closed the gap incredibly fast.
Sabrina thought to herself in astonishment. 'What speed!' She had not expected such quick movement from such a large creature.
Gladion muttered his explanation quietly, almost to himself. "There is a reason he is the premium flyer of the team and I use it for flying. There is no one faster than Tropius. You would think its big size would be a leverage. But he is like a fighter jet with those big wings."
He then raised his voice for the next order.
"Give it another taste of some wind," Gladion said.
Eldergreen used Gust again. This time, it was at point blank range. The large amounts of fast wind hit Xatu directly and sent it spinning downwards uncontrollably. Xatu tumbled through the air, unable to steady itself. Because it could not control its movement, it could not even use Teleport to escape the fall.
"Body slam," Gladion commanded next.
The massive Tropius dove down and slammed its heavy body onto the tiny Xatu. The impact was tremendous. When Eldergreen finally lifted its body, there was a large Xatu-shaped crater in the ground. Xatu lay there, completely knocked out.
Gladion felt sure that Xatu needed urgent medical attention. Probably most of its ribs were broken from that heavy slam. It had been a brutal finish.
Sabrina quickly recalled her Pokemon into its pokeball to protect it from further harm using the stasis function of the pokeball.
The announcer's voice boomed across the stadium. "And in the battle of the two flying Pokemon, the bigger one has crushed the smaller Pokemon to the ground literally. And the score is two to two. Gym leader Gladion has come back to the fight. You can never count him out, can you?"
Sabrina took a deep breath and sent out her next Pokemon. "Let's go Gardevoir," she said.
Gardevoir appeared gracefully on the field. The elegant Pokemon moved with poise and confidence. Its white dress-like body flowed as it took position.
Gladion did not hesitate and gave his order right away.
"Magical leaf," he said.
Tropius released leaves made of pure grass energy. These glowing leaves launched toward Gardevoir like guided missiles.
Sabrina responded swiftly.
"Double team," she commanded.
Multiple copies of Gardevoir appeared all around the field. The real one mixed in with the illusions. The magical leaves hit some of the fake copies, making them disappear in bursts of light. But many copies, including the real Gardevoir, remained untouched and dodged the attack successfully.
"Now use Calm mind," Sabrina said.
All the remaining double team copies of Gardevoir had their eyes glow. They used the move to raise their special attack and special defense. This made Gardevoir stronger in its mind powers and more resistant to special moves.
Gladion pushed forward with his next attack.
"Air slash," he commanded.
Tropius sliced its huge wings through the air. Powerful blades of wind flew out and cut through half of the copies. Then it did the same with the other wing, clearing out more of the illusions. The real Gardevoir got hit by one of the slashes and grunted in pain. But the calm mind boost helped it endure the damage without falling.
Sabrina kept building her strategy.
"Hypnosis," she commanded.
Gardevoir tried to hypnotize Tropius with its glowing eyes, sending waves of sleepy energy toward the big Pokemon. Tropius shook its head and fought off the effects, resisting the urge to fall asleep.
While Tropius was busy fighting the hypnosis, Sabrina gave another command.
"Change to calm mind," she said.
Gardevoir used the moment to perform another calm mind. This raised its special attack and special defense even further. By the time Tropius had fully shaken off the hypnosis, it was too late. Gardevoir had powered up significantly.
"Now mystical fire," Sabrina ordered.
Gardevoir unleashed mystical fire, a special fire type move it could learn naturally. Flames in beautiful purple and blue colors surrounded the huge body of Tropius.
The fire burned intensely, covering every part of the large Pokemon. Tropius roared in pain as the flames continued to hurt it. The mystical fire was strong and effective against its grass and flying typing.
When the fire finally died down, Tropius stood for a moment, swaying. Then it collapsed heavily onto the ground. Its eyes closed, and it was unconscious.
