Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - who are you?

The morning sun began to filter through the thick canopy of the forest, casting dappled light onto the sleeping forms of Nigel and Eldric. After the grueling journey of the previous day, they had collapsed in exhaustion, seeking refuge in the quiet safety of the woods. The fire they had built the night before had long since burned down to embers, but the warmth between them still lingered, a sense of closeness and comfort after everything they had been through.

Nigel stirred first, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. For a brief moment, everything seemed peaceful. But then, the acrid smell of smoke assaulted his senses. He blinked, confused at first, but as he turned his head toward the sky, his blood ran cold.

Black smoke was rising not far from their camp—thick, billowing clouds of it that turned the blue sky into a dull, ominous gray.

"Eldric! Wake up!" Nigel shouted, his voice thick with panic as he shook Eldric awake.

Eldric groaned, his body still sore from the previous day's battles. But the urgency in Nigel's voice snapped him out of his grogginess. He sat up quickly, his eyes widening as he followed Nigel's gaze toward the smoke.

"Gods… what's happening?" Eldric muttered, scrambling to his feet.

Nigel was already grabbing his sword, his mind racing. "There's a village nearby. It must be under attack!"

Without waiting for Eldric's response, Nigel took off running toward the source of the smoke. His heart pounded in his chest, not just from the exertion but from the fear gnawing at him. Villages didn't just burn for no reason. There was something more to this, and whatever it was, they had to stop it.

Eldric, though still tired, quickly followed, his staff clutched tightly in his hands. The two of them moved swiftly through the underbrush, their feet barely making a sound on the forest floor. The closer they got, the thicker the smoke became, stinging their eyes and making it difficult to breathe.

By the time they emerged from the trees, they could see the full scope of the disaster unfolding before them.

A small village lay in ruins, engulfed in flames. Villagers ran in every direction, screaming for help as their homes crumbled under the intense heat. But it wasn't just fire that had brought this destruction.

A massive dragon, its scales as dark as coal, swooped low over the village, spewing fire from its maw and setting everything ablaze. Its wings were so large they blotted out the sky, and its roar was deafening, shaking the very ground beneath Nigel's feet.

Nigel froze for a moment, his eyes wide with horror. "A dragon…" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the chaos.

Eldric was just as shocked, but he quickly regained his composure. "We have to help them!" he shouted, grabbing Nigel by the arm and pulling him forward.

The two of them ran into the burning village, dodging debris and flames as they went. Nigel immediately began slashing at the falling beams and burning rubble, trying to clear paths for the fleeing villagers. Eldric, on the other hand, was already using his magic, casting healing spells on the injured villagers who had been caught in the dragon's attacks.

But no matter how much they tried to help, it was clear that they were fighting a losing battle.

The dragon was relentless, circling back again and again to rain fire down upon the village. Its flames were so hot that even Nigel, who had faced many dangers before, could feel the heat searing his skin every time it swooped past.

"Damn it!" Nigel cursed, narrowly dodging another blast of fire. "I can't get close enough to hit it! Its scales are too thick!"

Eldric, who was now sweating profusely from the effort of keeping Nigel and the villagers alive, shook his head. "I don't know how much longer I can keep this up. My healing magic—it's not enough. The dragon's too powerful!"

Nigel gritted his teeth, frustration and desperation bubbling up inside him. He could see the fear in Eldric's eyes, the exhaustion in his movements. They were outmatched, and they both knew it. But Nigel refused to give up. He couldn't let this village fall—not when so many innocent lives were at stake.

The dragon roared again, louder this time, and turned its fiery gaze toward Nigel. With a terrifying speed that belied its massive size, the beast lunged toward him, flames licking at its jaws.

Nigel raised his sword, ready to defend himself, but the sheer force of the dragon's attack sent him flying backward. He hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the wind out of him. His sword clattered out of his hand, landing several feet away.

"Nigel!" Eldric screamed, rushing toward him. He extended his hand, casting a healing spell in Nigel's direction, but the magic flickered weakly, barely enough to mend the deep burns on Nigel's arms.

Nigel groaned, trying to push himself up, but his body refused to cooperate. His muscles felt like they were on fire, and every movement sent waves of pain through him. He could hear the dragon's wings beating above him, could feel the heat of its fire drawing closer.

Eldric stood between Nigel and the dragon, his staff raised in a desperate attempt to protect his friend. But it was clear that Eldric had reached his limit. His magic was fading, and there was nothing more he could do.

The dragon roared once more, its fiery breath aimed directly at Eldric.

"No!" Nigel shouted, but his voice was weak, barely more than a hoarse whisper. His vision blurred as he watched the dragon unleash another torrent of flames, this time directly at Eldric.

Eldric tried to cast a shield spell, but his strength had drained too much. The flames crashed into him, sending him flying backward into a pile of burning rubble.

Nigel's heart lurched in his chest. He tried to move, tried to force his body to get up, but he was paralyzed. His muscles refused to obey. He could only watch in helpless horror as the dragon turned its attention back to Eldric, who lay unconscious amidst the burning wreckage.

"No… please, no…" Nigel whispered, tears of frustration and pain stinging his eyes. He couldn't lose Eldric. Not like this. Not when they had come so far together.

The dragon reared back, its mouth glowing with fire, ready to deliver the final blow to Eldric.

But just as the flames began to form, a powerful blast of water shot through the air, crashing into the dragon's side with enough force to knock it off balance. The fire in its throat fizzled out, and it let out a deafening roar of frustration as the water continued to pour over it, dousing its flames and soaking its black scales.

Nigel blinked, his mind struggling to comprehend what had just happened.

Through the thick smoke and the haze of the battle, a man appeared. He moved with the fluid grace of a seasoned warrior, his hands glowing with an ethereal blue light. Around him, water swirled in intricate patterns, obeying his every command. With a flick of his wrist, the man sent another wave of water crashing into the dragon, forcing it to retreat further.

The dragon roared again, but this time it was a sound of defeat. It flapped its massive wings, trying to regain control, but the man's power over water was too strong. He summoned another torrent, this one larger and more forceful, that struck the dragon with such intensity that it let out a final, ear-splitting screech before taking to the skies and disappearing into the clouds.

The village fell silent, save for the crackling of the remaining fires and the soft trickle of water as it settled into the scorched earth.

Nigel's heart still pounded in his chest, but the immediate danger had passed. He forced himself to sit up, his body aching with every movement. His eyes searched for Eldric, who lay motionless on the ground. Panic gripped Nigel's heart as he crawled toward him, his legs still too weak to stand.

"Eldric… please be okay," Nigel muttered under his breath, his voice hoarse from the smoke and the strain of the battle.

When he finally reached Eldric, he checked for any signs of life. Eldric's chest was rising and falling, albeit weakly. Relief flooded Nigel, and he let out a shaky breath.

"You're alive…" Nigel whispered, his hand trembling as he placed it on Eldric's shoulder. "You're going to be okay."

But as Nigel looked up, he saw the man—the one who had saved them—standing just a few feet away. The man's face was partially obscured by the hood of his cloak, but there was an undeniable air of power and mystery surrounding him. His hands still glowed faintly with the remnants of his magic, the water that had saved them now trickling down to the ground.

Nigel's eyes widened in shock. Who was this man? And how had he managed to wield such incredible power?

The man remained silent, his gaze fixed on Nigel and Eldric. There was something unreadable in his expression, a sense of detachment, as if he were observing them from a distance.

Nigel struggled to his feet, wincing as pain shot through his body. He clutched his sword tightly, though he knew he was in no condition to fight.

"Who… who are you?" Nigel asked, his voice strained.

The man didn't answer immediately. Instead, he stepped forward, his movements calm
