Chapter 701, You Look Down on Me
He cursed under his breath and grabbed Janvito, who was about to charge out. "Dean, take Mr. Sim and teleport out."
Janvito shook his head. "It's not time to go yet."
"Don't wait. Wu Heng is probably gone. If we delay, we'll all die. Make sure to report the truth to the Guild and get revenge for us," said another.
Whoosh whoosh~!
As they spoke, sounds of tearing wind came from above.
Several thick ballista bolts suddenly rained down from the sky.
Thud thud~!
The sound of flesh being pierced echoed.
The bolts struck Guild members who couldn't dodge, causing more casualties.
Next to Janvito, a guard's chest armor tore open, his body nailed to the ground, blood and intestines spilling.
Blood gushed from his mouth and nose.
"Yabo!" Janvito shouted.
The guard clenched his teeth through pain, blood staining his jaw, and stammered, "Sir... go... get out of here."
"Don't speak. Drink this," Janvito said, opening a potion and pouring it into his mouth.
Blood and potion dribbled from the corner of his lips.
Kill~!
The army launched another attack—iron shields in front, crossbows covering from behind.
Like a tidal wave, they surged forward.
"Sim! Mor!" Janvito shouted.
Two investigators, recording with pen and paper, hurried over.
"Take care, everyone. I'll report everything to the Guild," Janvito said.
A magic circle began to glow underfoot.
"And Wu Heng—he fled mid-battle! Beat him up for us!" a cleric shouted.
As soon as he finished speaking—
Janvito abruptly stopped casting, head snapping up.
A flying carpet was approaching.
"Fled? A necromancer runs from corpses on a battlefield? You look down on me!"
Wu Heng was bloodstained and dusty.
His gaze fell to the battered Guild members below.
......
Seeing Wu Heng, everyone's eyes widened.
No one expected he hadn't fled—and even returned.
"Wu Heng, why'd you come back?"
"Did you find the City Lord?"
"I was just joking! You actually came back."
The crowd erupted in chatter.
He hadn't returned for so long—they thought he'd run away.
But now seeing him, it felt like he was walking into a trap.
Was he here to die?
The magic carpet rose higher.
Wu Heng held a corpse in one hand and a loudspeaker in the other, shouting: "City Lord Darsil is dead. Leave now and be spared. Persist, and you'll be wanted by the Guild."
The loudspeaker amplified his voice quickly.
The charging soldiers heard it and looked up.
When they saw the blood-soaked corpse hanging like a dead dog, their charge slowed.
The City Lord? Dead?
Unlike the Professionals of the Guild—
The conscripted city soldiers saw the City Lord as the top authority.
He represented the Ekow Kingdom—and the city's highest power.
If the City Lord was dead—
Was this battle even worth continuing?
"Drop your weapons and go home. Don't die for nothing."
The broadcast echoed.
At the same time, dark shadows suddenly loomed—skeleton wyverns flew in from the port, darkening the sky.
Behind them came a massive skeleton army with weapons, advancing fast.
Ekow's soldiers, already shaken by the City Lord's death, lost all morale at the sight of the wyverns and reinforcements.
Then, they started to flee—some fighting the rear guard.
Flags were dropped to the ground.
More and more soldiers followed suit—the army crumbled.
In the blink of an eye, the fight was over.
The Guild members finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Wu Heng descended, storing the City Lord's body.
Wounded lay all around, along with several dead guards and members.
Wu Heng walked over and cast [Revival] repeatedly—several dead members became critically wounded instead.
Clerics began casting Holy Word and administering potions.
"The City Lord is dead?" Janvito asked.
"Dead," Wu Heng replied, casting [Battlefield of the Dead].
Piled corpses turned to skeletons, rising and wobbling.
Rotting flesh oozed from their armor seams.
"Take the wounded to the fleet. Don't go alone—move with the skeletons," Janvito ordered. Then he turned to Wu Heng, "Wu Heng, send some skeletons with us to help the elder. We need to kill that level-18 Professional."
"Yes, Dean," the Guild members responded.
Wu Heng nodded. "Got it."
He deployed some skeletons and hurried after Tapani.
Since the battlefield of the two level-18s was unknown, teleportation wasn't an option. They had to run and search.
......
Thud thud thud~!
The two ran with a massive skeleton force.
Along the way, they saw terrified, armorless soldiers diving into alleyways.
Halfway there, they spotted Elder Tapani running back.
Janvito frowned. "Did you kill him?"
Tapani looked at them and the skeleton army. "I saw him fleeing the city. I came back to help—what happened?"
Fled?
That boxer must've realized the plan failed.
He knew they couldn't win—and staying meant facing two level-18s.
So he chose to escape.
"Wu Heng killed the City Lord. Reinforcements arrived at the port," Janvito explained, then stared at Wu Heng. "You brought this many skeletons?"
"The biggest ship—wyverns on the deck, skeletons in the hold," Wu Heng replied.
"You... really predicted they'd attack us?" Janvito asked.
"Just in case."
Actually, Wu Heng always intended that ship as a troop transport.
......
Battleship, inside the hold.
Wu Heng, Tapani, Janvito, and several level-15 Professionals sat, eating to recover and discussing next steps.
Thanks to Wu Heng, the dead were revived.
But those missing limbs couldn't be restored.
At least their lives were saved.
"Did we find the reason yet?" Tapani asked.
"We brought the City Lord's body. Let's question him soon," Wu Heng replied.
Everyone nodded.
Five questions should be enough to get the full picture.
Janvito took a sip of water and pulled out a comb to fix his beard. "What about this city? Without a lord, it's full of chaos. Once we leave, it'll turn into a bandit den."
The city was now a problem.
With the Guild present, there was still deterrence—people behaved.
But once they left, the situation would rapidly devolve.
And with Ekow Kingdom's ongoing wars, appointing a new City Lord would take time.
"Should the Guild manage it for now?" a dwarf suggested.
"That could work—let Wu Heng's skeletons patrol and restore order."
"The case isn't fully solved. Won't Ekow suspect we killed their lord to seize the city?"
"They attacked our members—we should be demanding accountability."
"There's no precedent of the Guild occupying a sovereign city."
Everyone chimed in.
Tapani turned to Wu Heng. "Wu Heng, what do you think?"
While eating, Wu Heng looked up. "The Guild can't leave yet, or chaos will return. I think we report this to HQ and see what the leaders decide."
"Fair enough. We'll wait for their decision," Tapani nodded.
"Excuse me," Philipa suddenly raised her hand.
Everyone turned to the young girl captain beside Wu Heng.
Rumor had it she held the fleet together and boldly ordered the skeleton army to rescue everyone.
She'd saved them all.
"Young lady, what's your view?" Janvito asked.
"The Kingdom's Fifth Princess is on the ship. She can stabilize the officials here."
