PRESENT DAY: NIGHT— FUSAGAKURE
The deep, dark blue sky of the Fusagakure had shifted into a heavy midnight ink. High above the towering stone cliffs that caged the rushing river below, thousands of stars continued to burn like sharp diamonds, entirely cold and indifferent to the constant chaos unfolding beneath them.
Down in the valley, the shattered, giant-like stone bones of the Kannabi Bridge rested in thick shadows, a silent graveyard from an era they weren't supposed to touch.
The fire in the small clearing had burned down to its red, pulsing embers, casting long, wavering silhouettes against the massive, ink-dark trunks of the pine forest.
The steady, rhythmic chirr-chirr... chirr-chirr of the hidden crickets filled the heavy silence, a constant heartbeat for Fusagakure.
Sasuke remained sitting flat on the damp grass, his back resting rigidly against the rough bark of a massive tree trunk. His black, long-sleeved shirt completely blended into the dense shadows, and his long legs were stretched out carelessly toward the dying embers.
He kept his right hand loosely buried in his messy dark hair, his jaw locked tight as the final words of his incident was narrated in the chilly night.
The heavy silence lasted for only a few seconds before a bright, ringing laugh broke it completely.
"Pfft—hahaha! Oh my gosh, I'm sorry, I really am!" Ino burst out, covering her mouth with her hand as her shoulders shook with pure amusement.
Her blue eyes sparkled under her blonde bangs as she looked down at the sitting Uchiha.
"But I just can't help it! Sasuke-kun, you really went to those extreme, scary lengths over a little girl's sleeve? Threatening to cut off their hands right there in the snow? Seriously, who even does that?!"
Kawaki shifted his weight in the grass, his left hand resting on his knee where the dark, diamond-shaped Karma mark sat still against his skin.
He let out a dull huff, his sharp eyes looking over at Sasuke with a mocking smirk as he picked up right where Ino left off.
"Hold on a second..." Kawaki said, throwing his wooden fish stick into the dirt. "So you actually dropped down there and threatened to cut off their limbs just because they touched her?"
He let out a dry laugh, looking up at the thick branches above them.
"And what was that talk about sitting on a tree branch being 'The Black Devil's arrival sign'? You actually scared the border and town shinobi back at that whatever Crane with that story—"
"Frozen Crane." Minato interrupted softly from his log, holding up a polite finger.
Kawaki's eyebrow twitched violently. He didn't look at Minato, instead clenching his jaw as he pushed through his sentence. "Right. Whatever. You scared the border and town shinobi with that—"
"Samurai." Minato corrected again, his expression completely innocent and helpful. "They were border and town samurai, Kawaki. Not shinobi. The Five Great Nations have shinobi, but Tetsu no Kuni has—"
"I don't give a damn!" Kawaki finally snapped, his head whipping around to glare at the blonde man. He took a sharp breath, turning his furious glare back to the sitting Uchiha.
"The point is, Sasuke, you actually scared those guys with that ridiculous tree story. Are you seriously bragging about your own entrance?!"
"I never knew this even happened..."
The quiet, stunned murmur came from Minato. He was sitting on a low log near the fire, his bright blue eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and sudden realization.
He adjusted his stance, running a hand through his spiky, wild blonde hair as he looked over at his dark-haired comrade sitting in the shadows.
"Sasuke... we had been together half a time back then. Why did you never tell me about this? You never once mentioned meeting her back then."
For the first time since they had crossed into that erratic flow of time, the fearsome Black Devil looked entirely cornered.
Sitting in the dirt, Sasuke rapidly turned his face away toward the dark woods, but it was too late. A sudden, sharp heat rushed up his neck, and a visible, dark crimson blush crept onto his pale cheeks.
His messy dark hair fell forward to shield his eyes from the firelight as he let out a harsh, defensive grunt. He pulled his dark cloak tighter around his chest, his jaw practically locked shut.
He couldn't possibly confess aloud that the memory of her tiny, shivering frame in that snow-dusted alleyway was a sacred moment he had locked away in the deepest corner of his heart—a memory he chewed on whenever the darkness of his past threatened to swallow him whole.
Beside the fire, Neji sat completely still, but his rigid posture had completely relaxed. As the details of Sasuke's aggressive rescue sank into his mind, a faint pink blush bloomed across his high cheekbones.
He didn't scold Sasuke at all. He didn't complain about wasted chakra or breaking their stealth mission. Deep down, a quiet warmth washed through Neji's chest.
Hearing just how protective Sasuke had been over Hinata filled him with a strange sense of peace. He looked down at his dark kimono, his fingers relaxing against his knees.
'You really went that far to protect her... even when she's just a kid who doesn't completely know you yet.'
Neji cleared his throat softly, keeping his voice steady to hide his blushing face as he looked over at the sitting Uchiha.
"Well... if she was cornered in an alley like that, then you did the right thing." Neji said bluntly, his tone softening. "Hinata-sama's safety comes first. I don't see any problem with what you did, Sasuke."
"Oh, please! Don't you start defending him, Neji-san!" Ino burst out, a massive, triumphant grin splitting across her face as she saw Sasuke's blushing face hiding in the shadows.
She practically danced on her heels, her light purple jacket swaying in the midnight wind as she pointed a teasing finger at the sitting Uchiha.
"Look at him! The legendary, terrifying Black Devil is completely flushed sitting over there in the dirt! Sasuke, you are a terrible liar. 'Keeping the timeline safe'? Give me a break! You completely froze up and folded the moment you saw that little girl in the white snow. Admit it, your cold heart melted right then and there!"
Sasuke's eyebrow twitched violently, his fist clenching in the grass as he refused to give her the satisfaction of a response, his face still burning red under his hair.
From the edge of the clearing, a dry, creepy laugh vibrated from the shadows. Orochimaru leaned slightly forward, his pale, ghost-like skin reflecting the dying flames until he looked like a demon rising from the dark wood.
His long tongue flicked out briefly over his upper lip, his golden, snake-like eyes dancing with a heavy, mocking amusement as his purple earrings swayed in the chilly breeze.
"My, my... what a fascinating show, Sasuke-kun," Orochimaru hissed softly, his voice dripping with playful malice. "You know, seeing how obsessive you get over a stranger's sleeve, I can't help but feel a bit sorry for your wife."
" The poor girl certainly doesn't need a nagging mother-in-law in her life, because she already has you to nag at her instead. Tell me... do you yell at her this much whenever the slightest thing happens to your kids?"
"Oh, shut up, you freak!" Kawaki grumbled, sitting up abruptly and glaring at the Sannin with pure disgust. "No one wants to hear your sick jokes about mothers or whatever the hell you're talking about."
Kawaki then rolled his eyes, turning his judgmental stare toward Minato and the still-blushing Sasuke. "And honestly? The whole thing sounds like a total nightmare. A horrible woman's face—that's exactly what this entire situation is giving me. We're sitting in the dirt, hiding from history, while the Hokage is having an emotional crisis over the pink-haired brat's spine, and the Uchiha is turning bright red over a little girl's jacket sleeve. It's pathetic."
Minato let out a sheepish, defeated sigh, rubbing the back of his neck as his playful side completely crumbled under Kawaki's harsh words. "Yare-yare... when you put it like that, it does sound a bit chaotic."
But the warmth around the dying embers of Fusagakure remained, thick and undeniable. The teasing voices of his comrades faded into a steady hum in Sasuke's ears as he stared back into the red, pulsing coals, slowly letting the heat leave his face.
They could laugh, they could tease, and they could call him an insane, dramatic maniac all they wanted.
They didn't know the truth. They didn't know that the little girl in the snowy alleyway was the very soul anchored to his own.
Minato's sheepish chuckle faded into the crackle of the campfire, the lighthearted warmth slowly cooling down.
Neji rested his chin on his fingers, his pale Byakugan catching the reflection of the orange flames. The faint pink tint on his face was completely gone now, replaced by a cold, sharp focus.
"We've had our laugh." Neji said quietly, his voice cutting through the remaining giggles with a sudden, heavy gravity. "But we cannot forget why we are resting in these woods in the first place. Sasuke's encounter in the alleyway was just a symptom. The real issue is the person pulling the strings from the shadows."
The clearing went completely still. Kawaki stopped tossing his sticks, and even Orochimaru's smirk faded into a thin, attentive line.
"UCHIHA HIKARU..."
Neji continued, his tone dropping a wave. "His strategy isn't just aggressive—it's terrifyingly precise. He isn't trying to fight us head-on. He is manipulating the very fabric of this timeline to corner us."
Neji shifted slightly, his pale gaze sweeping across the faces of the squad before settling directly on the maps and notes laid out near the fire.
"Think about it carefully..." Neji said, his voice dropping into a low, analytical tone. "Hikaru isn't just sending shinobi or coming himself to hunt us down...."
"A normal enemy would try to overwhelm us with sheer numbers or trap us in a coordinated ambush. But Hikaru's strategy is entirely psychological and structural. He is intentionally creating chaos in minor, seemingly insignificant areas of the timeline, forcing us to react."
He reached out, tracing a line in the dirt with a small twig.
"Every time we step in to fix a small mistake in time—like Sasuke did in that alleyway—we are forced to show ourselves, waste our chakra, and interfere with the past. He isn't trying to fight us head-on. He is trying to tire us out and ruin our secrecy until we have nowhere left to hide. He is using time itself as a weapon to slowly destroy us."
Minato nodded slowly, his expression growing deeply serious as he looked at the map. The relaxed, cheerful father figure from moments ago was entirely gone, replaced by the sharp, calculating mind of Yondaime Hokage.
"Neji is right." Minato picked up, his voice steady and quiet. "Hikaru's placement of forces back at the Frozen Crane wasn't a mistake or a standard border guard setup. He deliberately positioned people who would provoke a response."
"He knows our moral compass. He knows that if a civilian or a young child is put in immediate danger, we will interfere, regardless of the mission parameters. It's a flawless psychological trap. He is turning our own protective instincts into our greatest weakness."
Kawaki leaned his head back against the tree trunk, staring up at the dark canopy above, though his jaw was tightly clenched.
"It's a disgusting way to fight." Kawaki muttered, his tone dripping with cold irritation.
"That guy is a coward who won't face us himself, but he's smart. He's deliberately thinning our decisions and initial motives. Every step we take feels like we're walking right into a web he spun weeks ago. If we keep moving forward blindly just reacting to his provocations, we're going to run out of options before we even reach our main objective."
Sasuke remained completely silent in the shadows, his eyes narrowed as he listened to their talks. He didn't offer a contradiction, because deep down, he knew their analysis was absolutely flawless but his analysis was completely different which will take some time for them to adapt to.
The crackle of a burning log was the only sound in the clearing as the heavy weight of Kawaki's words settled over them. But before the tactical silence could fully take hold, a soft, slithering sound broke the stillness.
Orochimaru slowly shifted his weight, his pale hands sliding out from the wide sleeves of his cloak. The firelight caught the sharp, dangerous glint in his golden eyes as a slow, unsettling smile stretched across his face.
"A beautiful theory, Neji-kun... so structured, so perfectly logical ." Orochimaru murmured, his voice dripping like honey over cold stone.
"But you are all looking at this through the lens of a standard battlefield. You are assuming the enemy sees the exact same board you do. Tell me... what if we are giving Hikaru-kun entirely too much credit?"

No, I am not telling you where.
Go suffer.
Respectfully. 💖😂
I know Chapter 26 isn't even out yet and here I am already nagging everyone to pay attention.
At this point I might be turning into Sasuke myself. 😭🤣
"Did you read carefully?"
"Did you notice the clue?"
"Did you analyze the dialogue?"
"Go back and read it again."
— Uchiha Sasuke, probably. 🤦♂️😂
Until we meet again in the next chapter...
