Chapter 106: The King's Silence
Winter's Heaven celebrated.
For three days.
The taverns were full.
The markets were crowded.
Children played in the streets pretending to be the defenders of Frost Station Seven.
Some carried wooden swords and shouted they were Tormund.
Others argued over who got to be Commander Harl.
Entire schools spoke about the battle.
Factories worked harder than ever.
The kingdom felt stronger.
Safer.
Prouder.
The dead had come.
And Winter's Heaven had endured.
Yet despite the celebrations...
Something felt wrong.
The king had become silent.
At first nobody noticed.
Jon still attended meetings.
Still signed documents.
Still reviewed reports.
Still walked through the city.
Still listened to the council.
Everything appeared normal.
Yet those closest to him noticed immediately.
The smiles were gone.
The laughter was gone.
Even his warmth seemed diminished.
The king still spoke.
But only when necessary.
Tormund noticed.
Val noticed.
Alex noticed.
Everyone did.
No one knew what to say.
Because they all knew why.
The dead had been defeated.
But people had still died.
Three days after the battle, Winter's Heaven held a memorial.
Not just for Frost Station Seven.
Not just for Frost Station Nine.
Not just for Frost Station Twelve.
For every man and woman who had fallen.
The entire kingdom stopped.
Factories paused.
Trains halted.
Markets closed.
Schools dismissed students early.
Thousands gathered.
At the center of the city stood a newly built monument.
A massive wall of polished black stone.
Upon it were engraved names.
Every single one.
No exceptions.
No forgotten soldiers.
No nameless graves.
Every sacrifice remembered.
Forever.
The plaza was silent.
Thousands stood together.
Humans.
Giants.
Children.
Soldiers.
Workers.
Farmers.
Everyone.
The fallen belonged to all of them.
Jon stood before the monument.
Dressed simply.
No crown.
No throne.
No royal guards.
Just a man.
A king standing before the people he had failed.
At least in his own eyes.
One by one, families approached.
Flowers were placed.
Names were touched.
Tears were shed.
The city remained silent.
Respectful.
United.
A woman approached one of the names.
She could not have been older than forty.
Her hands trembled slightly.
Yet she smiled.
A sad smile.
The name belonged to her son.
A soldier from Frost Station Seven.
One of the fallen.
Jon watched from nearby.
The woman eventually noticed him.
She immediately bowed.
Jon shook his head.
"There is no need."
The woman stood.
For a moment neither spoke.
Then she smiled.
"I wanted to thank you."
Jon froze.
Thank him?
The words made no sense.
The woman continued.
"My son loved this kingdom."
Her eyes moved toward the monument.
"He always said serving Winter's Heaven was the greatest honor of his life."
Jon remained silent.
The woman wiped away a tear.
Then smiled again.
"He died protecting his home."
Her voice remained steady.
"He died proudly."
Those words struck harder than any blade.
The woman eventually left.
Jon remained where he stood.
Unable to move.
Unable to answer.
Unable to explain.
Later, a small boy approached the monument.
Perhaps seven years old.
Maybe eight.
The child stared at one particular name.
Then looked up toward Jon.
"That's my father."
Jon nodded slowly.
The boy smiled.
Not sadly.
Proudly.
"When I grow up, I want to be a soldier too."
The words nearly broke him.
The child eventually ran back toward his family.
Laughing.
Smiling.
Dreaming.
Jon remained alone.
Because he understood something the child didn't.
His father should have been here.
Alive.
Watching him grow.
The memorial continued for hours.
Thousands came.
Thousands left.
Yet the same pattern repeated.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Nobody blamed him.
Nobody accused him.
Nobody demanded answers.
Nobody asked why he hadn't intervened.
They trusted him.
Completely.
Absolutely.
Without question.
And somehow...
That made everything worse.
As evening arrived, the crowds slowly disappeared.
Families returned home.
Workers returned home.
Children returned home.
The city gradually returned to life.
Yet Jon remained.
Standing before the monument.
Reading every name.
Every single one.
The sun disappeared.
Darkness settled.
Snow began falling gently from the sky.
Still he remained.
Hours passed.
The city slept.
The streets emptied.
The memorial plaza became silent.
Only the wind remained.
Jon stood alone before the black stone wall.
His eyes moved across the names once more.
Memories resurfaced.
The radio transmissions.
The reports.
The voices.
"We will hold."
"We will buy time."
"Winter's Heaven must be protected."
Every word returned.
Every voice.
Every moment.
Then came the thought.
The same thought.
The one that refused to leave.
I could have saved them.
The words echoed endlessly.
Like a curse.
Like a wound that refused to heal.
He could have gone.
Nobody knew that better than him.
Flying Thunder God.
Wood Style.
Sage Mode.
Hashirama's power.
Thousands of jutsu.
King Ghidorah.
The strength to erase armies.
The power to destroy entire battlefields.
He could have saved them.
Every one of them.
His hands slowly clenched.
The snow around his feet cracked slightly.
Then another thought emerged.
One colder.
One darker.
They attacked my people.
The words felt different.
Different from guilt.
Different from regret.
The White Walkers.
The dead.
The Night King.
They had crossed into his lands.
Attacked his stations.
Killed his people.
Spilled the blood of those under his protection.
The cold wind intensified.
Jon's blue-grey eyes slowly turned north.
Beyond the city.
Beyond the frontier.
Beyond the stations.
Toward the frozen wilderness where the dead waited.
The guilt remained.
It would always remain.
He knew that now.
The dead could not be brought back.
The past could not be changed.
But the future?
That was different.
The White Walkers had attacked once.
They would attack again.
Of that he had no doubt.
His gaze hardened.
The calm mask remained.
The king remained composed.
Yet something deep within him had changed.
Something fundamental.
For years he had been patient.
For years he had built.
For years he had waited.
No longer.
Snow continued falling around him.
The memorial stood silent.
The names remained carved into stone.
Watching.
Remembering.
Jon looked north one final time.
Toward the darkness beyond the frontier.
Toward the lands of ice and death.
Toward the enemy.
And for the first time since the battle ended...
A single thought entered his mind.
Clear.
Cold.
Absolute.
Never again.
The wind howled across the sleeping city.
And somewhere far beyond the frontier...
The White Walkers remained completely unaware.
Unaware that their attack had awakened something far more dangerous than an army.
Far more dangerous than a kingdom.
They had awakened the wrath of Jon Snow.
