In the middle of the night, Xie Shichen heard Hei Chai crying over and over again.
"Xie Shichen, I miss you so much, I really miss you."
"When you're not here, I feel hungry."
"When you're not here, I feel so sad."
Recalling what she had said, Xie Shichen felt a deep ache in his heart and gently kissed her hand.
He wanted to stay with her, but he couldn't.
Firstly, He Jin said the timing wasn't right, and he was genuinely afraid that after all this effort, with Hei Chai just starting to realize her feelings, he might lose it all if he acted impulsively.
Secondly, his work wasn't something he could simply put aside; although he had applied to transfer to the border to avoid Hei Chai, the work was real and he had to be responsible for it.
So he came back merely for a short stayover; he'd have to leave tomorrow before she awoke.
