Chapter 5 - Escape from the shadows

The air in the old factory was thick with tension. Shadows danced across the crumbling walls, and the faint hum of the wraith's malevolent energy filled the space. Nero, Felix, and Gareth stood frozen, the reality of their situation sinking in. They had never encountered a wraith before. These creatures usually lurked deeper in the Outer Zone, a place most scavengers knew better than to venture into. The Middle Ring Defense Unit routinely cleared the areas around Vesper City of wraiths, knowing the danger of leaving them unchecked. But here, deep in the Outer Zone, they were on their own.

The wraith lunged at them, its form shifting and flickering like a dark, spectral flame. Its eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, and its movements were unnaturally fast. The three men scrambled, trying to avoid its attacks and fight back with their makeshift weapons. Their strikes passed through the wraith's ghostly form, doing little to no damage.

"This thing is too strong!" Gareth yelled, swinging a metal pipe ineffectually.

Nero's heart pounded in his chest. He narrowly dodged one of the wraith's attacks, feeling the rush of cold air as it passed by. Felix pushed him aside, taking a glancing blow that sent him sprawling. Felix winced but stayed on his feet, determination etched on his face.

"We need to get out of here," Nero gasped, realizing they were outmatched.

Felix replied grimly, "We can't. If we run, it'll pick us off one by one."

The wraith's presence seemed to darken the room, its form a swirling mass of shadows and eerie light. It lashed out with tendrils of dark energy, striking the ground and sending debris flying. The men were forced to constantly move, dodging and weaving to avoid being hit. The wraith's attacks left deep scorch marks on the walls and floor, a testament to its deadly power.

The pressure was getting to them. Gareth was the first to break, his face coated with fear. "No, I'm not going to die here!" he shouted, making a desperate dash for the exit. Unfortunately for him, the wraith moved quickly and struck him down. Gareth collapsed to the floor, only a soft groan escaping his lips.

Nero's fear threatened to overwhelm him. Seeing Gareth fall, he was certain they would all die here. Regret and despair filled his mind. If only he hadn't come. If only they hadn't been so careless. He hated himself for wanting more, believing now that he should have just accepted his place as a bottom feeder.

Feeling his end was near, Nero dropped his weapon, closed his eyes, accepting his fate. He knew there was no point in continuing this fight. The faces of his loved ones flashed before him—Sandra and Lyka. He wondered what they would think when he never returned. They would probably be sad, right? Then he saw his parents, though their faces were blurry in his mind after years apart. What were their final thoughts when they died? Were they scared, or maybe worried for the child theyll leave behind?

While Nero was lost in his thoughts, Felix used that time to take quick action before the wraith could finish them off. He rushed to his supply bag, retrieving a small object—an item he had obtained through his connections in the Middle Ring. It was a salt grenade, a rare and valuable tool against wraiths. He threw it at the wraith, and with a small explosion, the creature let out a piercing scream and became immobilized, its form flickering and unstable.

The noise jolted Nero back to reality. He saw the wraith in a hazy, static state and Felix rushing to Gareth's side. Felix checked Gareth's condition and called out to Nero.

"Nero, Gareth's alive, but we need to move now!" Felix shouted. "The grenade won't hold the wraith for long, and more could show up any minute."

Nero, still shaken but more alert, hurried over to help. Together, they lifted Gareth, each taking one of his arms over their shoulders, and started making their way out of the room. The oppressive atmosphere of the factory seemed to cling to them as they moved, each step a struggle against the weight of their fear and exhaustion.

They emerged into the open air, the dark sky of the Outer Zone stretching above them. The factory behind them loomed like a dark sentinel.

"Let's move, we need to find a place to lie low before this place is swarmed" Felix said, his voice resolute. "We're not dying here."

With Gareth supported between them, they set off. Though their ordeal was far from over.
