Chapter 8 - Clarity

The cloaked figure stood tall in the courtyard, its presence radiating an aura of quiet authority that silenced everything around it. The Naja leader, his arrogance momentarily stripped away, let the question fall from his lips.

"Who are you?"

The figure stepped forward into the light — a Naga, his body a striking blend of human and serpent. His scales glinted like polished obsidian, but his tail burned a vivid crimson, like a flame refusing to be extinguished. As he raised his head, his piercing eyes gleamed with the weight of ancient wisdom, his gaze boring into the Naja leader without flinching.

"My suspicions were correct," the figure said, his voice surprisingly gentle for all the authority it carried. "You are behind everything."

In their hiding place, Zym, Kael, and Mieza exchanged a stunned glance. Veridian. The very Naga they had hoped to find had found them instead. Relief and curiosity flooded through them in equal measure. Perhaps the tide was turning after all.

The Naja leader, however, was unmoved. "Veridian," he said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous murmur. "Of course you suspected."

Veridian said nothing. His gaze shifted to the smaller Naja figure, who — emboldened by their leader's composure — stepped forward, voice burning with defiance.

"We are righting a wrong," it hissed. "The Nagas have been subjugated for centuries. We are simply claiming what is rightfully ours — power and respect!"

Veridian's crimson eyes hardened. "Power gained through manipulation and deceit breeds nothing but more conflict," he said, his voice resonating with a deep, tired sadness. "True power lies in unity and the pursuit of justice — not in burning down what remains."

"Justice?" the Naja spat. "You speak of justice while the Garudas have taken everything from us!"

Zym could hold back no longer. He stepped out from cover, dropping the invisibility spell. Kael and Mieza emerged beside him, their celestial forms materialising in the moonlight.

"The Garudas had nothing to do with this," Zym said, his voice hard with barely contained fury. "It is you — the Naja — who have orchestrated every part of this deception."

Veridian turned to acknowledge them, and as his gaze met Zym's, something in the elder's calm presence seemed to draw the heat from Zym's anger, replacing it with clarity.

"Precisely, Guardian," Veridian said, addressing all three of them. "The Naja stole the Eye of Naga and employed dark magic to frame the Garudas for the theft."

The Naja leader scoffed. "Lies. You have no proof."

Veridian raised a hand. "I have been watching you for some time now." The Naja leader's composure fractured — just for a moment — his eyes betraying a flicker of genuine fear.

"You breached the wards protecting the Eye," Veridian continued, his voice unwavering. "You left behind traces of dark magic when you stole it. And then you planted the feather — a deliberate act to ensure suspicion fell upon the Garudas. I know all of it."

The smaller Naja turned sharply to its leader. But before either could speak, the Naja leader hissed a spell. A shadowy aura engulfed them both, dark energy crackling at its edges — and then they were gone. Vanished. The swirling vortex of darkness lingered for a heartbeat before dissipating into nothing, leaving behind a ringing silence.

Kael was the first to move. "A teleportation spell," he said, his voice tight. "We need to go after them."

Veridian stared at the spot where they had stood, his jaw set. "Forbidden magic. We must find them before they can do further damage." He turned to the three guardians, his expression grave but resolute. "Now that we know who is behind this, we can work to prevent the war. Word has reached us that the Garudas are already on their way. We must capture the Naja and expose them before the armies meet."

Mieza scanned the courtyard carefully. "There are faint traces of residual dark magic," she said. "Scattered, but present. Whatever ritual they were completing — it had a specific purpose."

Veridian stroked his long beard, his crimson eyes narrowing in thought. "Indeed. We will uncover that purpose." He looked at the three of them, a quiet warmth entering his expression for the first time. "Kael. It is good to see you again. The last time I laid eyes on you, you were just a boy visiting Oephidia with your parents." A faint smile touched the elder's lips. "Queen Melinoe would be glad to know you are here."

He straightened. "I propose we combine our strengths — track down the rogue Naja, recover the Eye, and bring the truth before those who need to hear it. Together, our chances are far greater."

Zym stood tall, resolve hardening in his chest. "We are in," he said without hesitation. "Zola is holding back the Garuda army as long as she can. We will do everything in our power to end this before it begins."

Kael nodded firmly. "We retrieve the Eye first. Everything else follows from that."

Mieza glanced between them. "Agreed. But we must also bring this before Queen Melinoe. She needs to know the truth about what has been done in her kingdom's name."

Veridian's expression sobered. "Not yet. Not without proof she cannot dismiss." He looked at each of them in turn. "The Queen trusts no one lightly. If we go to her with suspicion and no evidence, she will not listen — and we will have spent the only chance we have." He paused. "We gather the proof first. Then we go to her."

Kael swept his gaze across the silent courtyard. "Then we do not waste another moment," he said. "The Naja leader has the Eye, forbidden magic at his disposal, and a war already in motion. We move now."

The air between them settled into something firm and shared — four unlikely allies bound by a single purpose. Guardians and a Naga elder, standing together against a rogue faction willing to burn two kingdoms to the ground. The Eye had to be found. The truth had to be brought into the light. And time was running out.
