Saturday, 6:40 P.M.
The Community Hope Luncheon had come to a close.
One by one, guests thanked the organizers before leaving the Grand Aurora Hotel.
The ballroom that had buzzed with conversation only hours earlier had fallen quiet.
Outside...
The evening sky was painted in shades of amber and rose.
A cool breeze drifted through the hotel gardens.
Celina stood alone beneath a blooming cherry tree, holding the crystal plaque she had received.
Her fingers gently traced the engraved words.
Volunteer Recognition Award
She smiled softly.
Not because of the award.
But because she wished her mother had been there to see it.
"If she were here..."
"I think she'd be very proud."
Aaron's voice came from behind her.
"I believe she already is."
Celina turned.
He had loosened his tie slightly, his jacket resting over one arm.
For the first time that day...
He looked less like the president of Steel Corporation...
And more like an ordinary man enjoying the quiet evening.
She smiled.
"I didn't hear you."
"I wasn't trying to interrupt."
He stopped a respectful distance away.
His eyes rested briefly on the award.
"You earned it."
She looked down.
"I only did what anyone else would have done."
Aaron shook his head.
"No."
"Many people have opportunities to be kind."
"Very few choose them every day."
His words settled gently between them.
Celina looked up.
"Do you always know the right thing to say?"
A faint smile touched the corner of his lips.
"No."
"I simply say what I believe."
She laughed softly.
The sound carried through the peaceful garden.
Aaron realized...
He had begun recognizing her laughter.
There was the polite laugh she gave patients.
The cheerful laugh she shared with children.
And then...
There was this one.
Quiet.
Natural.
Reserved only for moments when she felt completely at ease.
Somehow...
It had become his favorite.
Neither of them noticed that the hotel staff had begun lighting the garden lanterns.
Golden lights flickered to life along the stone pathways.
The garden seemed almost magical.
Celina looked toward the city skyline.
"It really is beautiful."
Aaron followed her gaze.
"I rarely stop to look at it."
"You should."
She smiled.
"When you're always chasing tomorrow..."
"You forget today exists."
Aaron remained silent.
Her words reminded him of something his father had once said many years ago.
Back then...
He hadn't understood.
Now...
Standing beside her...
Perhaps he finally did.
A comfortable silence settled between them.
Neither of them felt the need to fill it.
Then...
Without warning...
A little boy came running through the garden.
It was Daniel.
Still wearing the tiny bow tie he'd insisted on keeping after the luncheon.
"Miss Celina!"
He threw his arms around her.
"I've been looking everywhere!"
She laughed, crouching to hug him.
"What happened?"
"I wanted to say goodbye."
His mother caught up a few moments later, slightly out of breath.
"I'm so sorry."
"He slipped away while I was talking."
"It's alright."
Daniel looked up at Aaron.
"Mr. Steel."
Aaron knelt so they were eye level.
"Yes?"
Daniel smiled mischievously.
"My mom says heroes should never eat dinner alone."
Aaron raised an eyebrow.
"Does she?"
Daniel nodded very seriously.
"So..."
He looked between Aaron and Celina.
"You two should eat together."
For one heartbeat...
Silence.
Daniel's mother covered her face in embarrassment.
"Oh dear..."
"I'm so sorry."
"He says whatever comes into his head."
Celina's cheeks flushed pink.
Aaron looked at the little boy.
Then...
To everyone's surprise...
He answered calmly.
"That's not bad advice."
Daniel grinned triumphantly.
"I knew it!"
Everyone laughed.
Even Daniel's embarrassed mother couldn't help smiling.
As they walked away...
Celina looked at Aaron.
"The children certainly like making things interesting."
"They're honest."
He replied.
"They usually say what adults are afraid to."
Their eyes met once more.
Neither spoke.
Yet something had changed.
Not dramatically.
Not suddenly.
Just enough for both of them to notice.
Far beyond the hotel gates...
A camera shutter clicked.
Hidden inside a parked vehicle...
Someone lowered a professional camera.
Several new photographs now filled the screen.
Aaron.
Celina.
Standing together beneath the evening lights.
The photographer smiled.
"This story..."
He murmured.
"...is only beginning."
