Chapter 23 - The First Dance

The orchestra resumed its melody, but the atmosphere in the ballroom had subtly changed.

Conversations gradually picked up again, yet curious glances continued drifting toward Aaron Steel and Celina Bakers.

The shattered glass had already been cleared away, but the memory of Aaron pulling Celina into his arms lingered in many minds.

Celina slowly returned to her seat, still feeling the warmth of his hand around her waist.

She lowered her eyes, hoping no one would notice the faint blush coloring her cheeks.

Aaron adjusted his cufflinks as though nothing unusual had happened.

Only Ethan, standing a few feet away, noticed the slight tightening of Aaron's jaw.

He knew his boss well enough to recognize that look.

Aaron wasn't as composed as he appeared.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced, "before tonight's auction begins, we invite everyone to enjoy the traditional opening dance."

Soft applause echoed through the ballroom.

Couples began making their way toward the polished dance floor.

Celina smiled politely.

"I've never learned ballroom dancing."

Aaron looked at the growing crowd.

"Neither have I."

She laughed.

"I don't believe that."

"It's true."

"I usually spend this part of the evening talking to investors."

Before she could respond, Edward Steel approached them with a warm smile.

"I believe that's because you've never had the right partner."

Aaron sighed softly.

"Grandfather..."

Edward ignored him and turned to Celina.

"My dear, would you do an old man a favor?"

Celina stood respectfully.

"Of course."

"Convince my stubborn grandson to enjoy one dance."

Celina looked at Aaron, unsure of what to say.

"I don't want to make him uncomfortable."

Edward chuckled.

"If Aaron didn't want to dance with you, he'd have said no already."

Aaron looked at his grandfather with quiet resignation.

"You planned this."

"I merely created an opportunity."

Edward smiled before walking away.

For a brief moment, silence settled between them.

Aaron extended his hand.

"Would you?"

Celina hesitated.

Then she placed her hand in his.

"I'll probably step on your shoes."

"I'll take that risk."

The music swelled as they joined the other couples.

Aaron gently rested one hand at her waist while their other hands met between them.

There was a respectful distance between them.

Neither wanted to cross a line.

"You seem nervous," Aaron said quietly.

"I am."

"Because of the dance?"

She shook her head.

"Because everyone is watching."

Aaron glanced around the ballroom.

"They'll find something else to talk about tomorrow."

She smiled.

"You really don't care what people think, do you?"

"I used to."

Her smile faded slightly.

"What changed?"

His gaze drifted toward the glittering chandeliers.

"I realized no matter what you do..."

"Someone will always judge you."

"So I stopped living for their approval."

Celina reflected on his words.

"I wish I could do that."

"You can."

She looked into his eyes.

"It just takes time."

As they moved slowly across the dance floor, the awkwardness between them began to fade.

To everyone's surprise...

They fit together naturally.

Not perfectly.

But comfortably.

Celina accidentally missed a step.

"Oh!"

She laughed in embarrassment.

"I warned you."

Aaron steadied her effortlessly.

"I believe you did."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Celina stared.

"There it is again."

"What?"

"That smile."

"It's becoming more frequent."

Aaron raised an eyebrow.

"Is that a complaint?"

"No."

She smiled warmly.

"I think it suits you."

For a brief second...

Aaron forgot they were surrounded by hundreds of people.

From the edge of the ballroom, Evelyn watched in silence.

A businessman beside her spoke casually.

"I thought you and Mr. Steel would make a wonderful couple someday."

Evelyn smiled politely.

"So did many people."

Her eyes never left the dance floor.

"But life rarely follows the plans we make."

There was no bitterness in her voice.

Only quiet reflection.

As the music came to an end, applause filled the ballroom.

Aaron released Celina's hand reluctantly.

"Thank you."

She smiled.

"I should be thanking you."

"For not laughing when I nearly tripped."

"I was impressed."

"By what?"

"You never stopped smiling."

Before Celina could answer, the host returned to the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, our charity auction will begin shortly."

The ballroom lights dimmed.

Neither Aaron nor Celina noticed the elegant woman who had quietly entered through a side door.

She paused the moment she saw them standing together.

Her expression changed ever so slightly.

Then she whispered a name under her breath.

"...Celina."

No one heard her.

But her arrival...

Would quietly change the course of the evening.
