Chapter 16 - The Morning After

Tuesday, 7:20 A.M.

The first rays of sunlight spilled over Rosewood, painting the city in soft shades of gold and amber. Streets that had been quiet only hours earlier gradually came alive. Coffee shops welcomed their first customers, buses rumbled through the avenues, and office workers hurried along the sidewalks with steaming cups in their hands.

For most people, it was simply another Tuesday.

But for Steel Medical Center...

It was anything but ordinary.

The automatic glass doors slid open as nurses began their morning shifts. Doctors reviewed patient charts while interns rushed through the hallways, trying to keep up with the pace of the hospital.

Yet beneath the familiar rhythm...

Something felt different.

Conversations stopped whenever someone walked by.

Phones appeared in almost every hand.

Soft whispers drifted through the corridors.

"Have you seen the news?"

"I can't believe it's already everywhere."

"They're saying Mr. Steel has finally fallen in love."

"No way... with a cleaner?"

"It's all over social media."

The whispers grew louder with every passing minute.

Celina Bakers stepped through the employees' entrance carrying a small canvas bag over her shoulder.

She wore the same neatly pressed hospital uniform she had ironed the night before.

Her dark hair was tied into a simple ponytail.

No makeup.

No expensive perfume.

Only a faint scent of lavender soap.

She greeted the security guard with her usual smile.

"Good morning, Mr. Collins."

The elderly man smiled back, though his expression seemed... awkward.

"Morning, Miss Celina."

He looked as though he wanted to say something.

Instead, he simply nodded and looked away.

Celina frowned slightly.

That's strange...

She continued walking.

As she passed through the lobby, several nurses glanced at her before quickly pretending to be busy.

Even the receptionists lowered their voices.

"What is going on today?"

Before she could think further, a familiar voice called out.

"Celina!"

Emily hurried toward her, almost out of breath.

"You finally came."

Celina laughed.

"Did I miss the morning meeting?"

Emily grabbed her arm.

"You've missed something much bigger."

"What happened?"

Emily looked around carefully before pulling out her phone.

"Promise you won't panic."

"I don't usually panic."

"Good..."

Emily unlocked the screen and handed it over.

A news article filled the display.

THE ICE KING'S SECRET? BILLIONAIRE CEO AARON STEEL CAUGHT WATCHING A HOSPITAL WORKER DURING CHARITY EVENT

Below the headline was a large photograph.

Celina stood beside the little boy she had encouraged onto the stage.

She was smiling gently at him.

Several feet behind her...

Aaron Steel was looking directly in her direction.

The photographer had captured the exact moment.

It looked...

Far more intimate than reality.

Celina stared at the image for several long seconds.

"...I didn't even know someone took this."

Emily sighed.

"Neither did anyone else."

Celina returned the phone.

"It's misleading."

"I was helping a child."

"I know.

Emily nodded.

"But people online don't care about the truth."

"They care about stories."

Celina lowered her eyes.

She had spent years avoiding attention.

Growing up, her mother used to say,

"A peaceful life is a precious gift. Protect it."

Until yesterday...

She had succeeded.

Meanwhile...

On the top floor of Steel Group Headquarters...

The atmosphere inside the executive boardroom was just as tense.

A long walnut table stretched across the room.

Twelve directors sat waiting.

At exactly eight o'clock...

The doors opened.

Aaron Steel entered.

His charcoal suit fit him perfectly.

His expression remained calm.

Unreadable.

Every person in the room stood immediately.

"Good morning, Mr. Steel."

He acknowledged them with a slight nod before taking his seat.

"Let's begin."

The meeting lasted nearly an hour.

Revenue reports.

International expansion.

A new hospital project.

Everything proceeded efficiently.

Until the Head of Public Relations cleared her throat.

"Mr. Steel..."

Aaron looked up.

She carefully placed a tablet in front of him.

The same photograph appeared.

Silence settled over the room.

"We've received over three hundred media inquiries since six this morning."

"No interviews."

"No statements."

She hesitated.

"Investors are asking whether this affects your public image."

Aaron studied the photograph.

His gaze lingered for only a moment.

Then he closed the tablet.

"The hospital held a charity event."

"A photograph was taken."

"There is nothing else to discuss."

"But sir—"

Aaron's voice remained even.

"I don't explain ordinary acts of kindness."

The room fell silent.

The directors exchanged glances.

Everyone understood.

The subject was over.

Without another word, Aaron turned the discussion back to business.

Yet...

Somewhere in the back of his mind...

The image refused to disappear.

Not because it embarrassed him.

But because, for the first time in years...

He found himself wondering about someone he barely knew.

Back at the hospital...

The morning rush gradually settled.

Children laughed in the pediatric playroom.

Parents chatted quietly in the waiting area.

Life continued.

Celina knelt beside a little girl who was trying to finish a puzzle.

"No, sweetheart..."

She smiled.

"The blue piece goes here."

The child clapped happily when the final piece fit.

"You did it!"

"I couldn't have done it without you."

Celina laughed softly.

"I think you could have."

"I just gave you a tiny hint."

Nearby, James Whitmore, the hospital director, watched the scene with quiet satisfaction.

A few moments later, Aaron arrived for a scheduled inspection of the new pediatric rehabilitation wing.

James greeted him warmly.

"Good morning, Mr. Steel."

Aaron nodded.

"How is construction progressing?"

"Right on schedule."

As they walked through the corridor, Aaron's attention drifted toward the playroom.

Through the glass wall...

He saw Celina sitting cross-legged on the floor.

Three children surrounded her.

One was drawing.

Another was reading aloud.

The youngest had fallen asleep against her shoulder.

She didn't seem to notice.

She simply continued reading the storybook in a soft, gentle voice.

No cameras.

No reporters.

No audience.

Just kindness.

James followed Aaron's gaze.

A knowing smile crossed his face.

"That's Celina."

Aaron remained silent.

James continued.

"She's been here for almost three years."

"Do you know what surprises me?"

Aaron glanced at him.

"She treats every patient as though they're family."

"Children adore her."

"So do the elderly patients."

"Even some of our grumpiest doctors smile when she's around."

Aaron watched quietly.

"Has she always been like this?"

James nodded.

"Every single day."

He chuckled.

"Sometimes I wonder whether she's working here..."

"...or whether she's quietly teaching the rest of us how to be human."

For the first time that morning...

Something softened in Aaron's expression.

Not admiration.

Not yet.

Respect.

A kind earned through actions...

Not words.

Before walking away, Aaron looked back one last time.

At that exact moment...

Celina looked up.

Their eyes met through the glass.

Just for a heartbeat.

Neither smiled.

Neither spoke.

Then a nurse called Celina's name.

She turned away.

When she looked back...

Aaron was already gone.

For reasons she couldn't explain...

She found herself wondering...

"Why did he look at me like that?"

And for reasons Aaron himself couldn't understand...

He carried the memory of that brief glance with him long after he left the hospital.

Neither of them realized it.

But sometimes...

The quietest moments changed a person's life far more than the loudest ones.
