Chapter 68 - Chapter 67

The air inside Jason's lab felt too dense to breathe.

The Ascension Core—his coffin-shaped machine—throbbed with a low, hungry hum, black vapor inside churning like storm clouds trapped in glass. Every few seconds, the darkness flattened into jagged sigils that crawled across the transparisteel window before dissolving again. Each symbol sent a prickle down Yugi's spine; on the other side of the barrier, Odion's jaw tightened every time one appeared, as if his very blood remembered them.

Coils of cable spider-webbed out from the Core, feeding it from generators bolted into the walls. Monitors flickered with streams of unreadable data. On one metal table, a heavily modified Duel Disk lay opened like a dissected organ, extra ports and cables grafted into its frame.

Jason stood between it all, hands folded neatly behind his back, lab coat whispering in the circulating air. His sunglasses reflected the glow of the consoles and the roiling black inside the Core; no eyes, no emotion—just twin black mirrors.

Beside him, Bakura's spirit wore human flesh like a tailored coat.

White hair spilled messily over his shoulders, shadows clinging to his features like smudged kohl. The Millennium Ring hung from his neck, its daggers swaying slightly, each one angled outward as if pointing at a threat only it sensed. His grin was lazy, a slash of amusement that never touched his eyes.

Beyond the violet barrier, Connor, Joey, Rebecca and Odion pressed in close, faces lit by the unnatural light.

Joey's knuckles rested against the shimmering surface. "You got this, Yug," he called, trying to sound more confident than he felt. "Flatten that tomb-raider wannabe and let us in already!

Bakura chuckled, activating his own Disk. Purple-black energy licked along its edges. "Oh, this is going to be fun," he crooned. "Jason promised me such wonderful things if I crack you open, Pharaoh."

Yami's gaze sharpened, his stance relaxing into that effortlessly regal posture that always seemed to straighten Yugi's small frame. "Is that why you keep crawling back from the shadows, Bakura?" he asked, voice deepening. "To be someone else's tool?"

Bakura's smile twitched, just a little. "Careful. I might take offense." He tilted his head toward the pulsing Core. "Besides… Jason's machine and I have an understanding. If I win, I get what I've always wanted." His eyes flashed red for a heartbeat. "Zorc returns in full."

As if on cue, the Core roared. The black smoke inside drew together into a massive, horned silhouette before dispersing again. Rebecca flinched back from the barrier, eyes wide.

Jason finally spoke, his tone annoyingly conversational. "The rules here are slightly altered, Pharaoh." He turned his head a degree, addressing both duelists at once. "If Bakura defeats you, the Core will have accumulated enough calibrated shadow energy to manifest Zorc fully. Your world ends. Eventually." His lips curled into something that might have been a smile. "If you defeat him and remember your name… the barrier drops. You gain access to me."

I need my true name… he thought, the realization pressing into him like a tightening band across his chest. Without it… I cannot seal Zorc. I cannot end Bakura's darkness. I cannot protect them…

For a moment, the air felt unbearably cold. He lifted his hand toward the Millennium Puzzle, which throbbed faintly, almost in sympathy. Warm… but not enough. Not complete.

Why can't I remember? Why now—when the darkness gathers again?

Bakura's laughter slithered into the silence, sharp and delighted.

"You feel it, don't you?" he taunted. "The missing piece. The one memory that turns kings into frightened children."

Outside the barrier, Connor pressed a hand to the glowing wall, his voice low but firm.

"Deal with Bakura," he said. "I know a way for you to remember your name,Just focus on winning this duel".

The Duel Disks flashed.

"Duel!"

Turn 1 – Yami Yugi

Yami drew, motion smooth, cloak of composure settling over him.

"I'll begin," he said. "I summon Queen's Knight in Attack Position!"

A swirl of light formed into a female knight in red armor, sword at her side. She landed with a graceful step, visor gleaming.

 (ATK 1500)

"I set two cards face-down," Yami continued, sliding them into his back row. "And end my turn."

Bakura smirked. "How very cautious of you. You really have learned."

Turn 2 – Bakura

Bakura's grin widened, sharp as a knife's edge, as he drew his next card. Shadows curled eagerly around his Duel Disk, the Millennium Ring trembling like it sensed fresh malice.

"Well now," he purred, "let's give this duel a little push into despair, shall we?"

He raised a card with a flourish.

"I activate the Spell Card—Graceful Charity."

The air rippled. Three spectral figures formed behind him—grinning, ghostly maidens whose hands brushed across his deck like cold fingers guiding fate itself. Bakura drew three cards in a smooth, practiced motion, eyes flickering with cruel delight as he fanned them out.

"Such generosity," he mocked. "And such a perfect opportunity to fill my Graveyard with the spirits I need."

He plucked two cards from his hand and held them between his fingers.

"I discard Headless Knight… and Souls of the Forgotten."

A cold wind swept across the field as the discarded monsters materialized briefly behind him:

—A knight's armor, hollow and clattering, collapsing onto phantom knees.

—A swarm of lost, whispering spirits that twisted around one another before sinking into the floor like smoke pulled by gravity.

Bakura's grin broadened, eyes gleaming with that unholy excitement only dark magic ignited in him.

"Every corpse and wandering soul strengthens me," he hissed.

"And now they belong to the shadows… exactly where they should be."

He drew, eyes glinting. "Next, I activate the Field Spell: Dark Sanctuary."

Shadows poured from the Ring, flooding the arena's virtual boundaries. Ghostly faces formed in the black haze, laughing in whispers, eyes white and empty. The floor itself seemed to breathe.

Connor's face tightened. "He's turning the duel into his home turf."

Bakura extended a hand, enjoying their unease. "Then, I'll set one monster face-down… and two cards face-down as well."

He let the cards slide into place, then met Yami's gaze. "Do you feel it, Pharaoh? The way the darkness presses in? That's your future, if you lose."

He ended with a lazy flick of his wrist. "Your move."

Turn 3 – Yami Yugi

Yami drew, the card sliding into his hand with a soft hiss. "I summon King's Knight!"

Golden armor and cape flaring, the second knight appeared beside Queen's Knight.

 (ATK 1600)

"And now," Yami announced, "since both Queen's Knight and King's Knight are on the field—" his voice grew stronger "—I can Special Summon Jack's Knight from my Deck!"

A third knight descended, cape billowing, sword raised.

 (ATK 1900)

Outside the barrier, Joey's face lit up. "Aw yeah! Royal Trio, baby!"

Rebecca pushed her glasses up. "He's building pressure early. Smart, if Bakura's planning some long game with Dark Sanctuary."

"But you've forgotten something," Bakura said, grin widening. "Every time you attack while Dark Sanctuary is active, there's a chance your own monster will stab you."

His hands hovered over his Disk. "Are you going to attack me, Pharaoh. Or are you too scared?"

Yami's eyes hardened. "I'll never let fear decide my turn. Battle! King's Knight—attack his face-down monster!"

King's Knight rushed forward, blade flashing—

The shadows surged. The ghostly faces in Dark Sanctuary writhed, a coin of dark light fliping in the air. It flashed—landing on a sigil.

"Ahh," Bakura said, delighted. "You hit the mark. Instead of your attack hitting my monster, Dark Sanctuary redirects it—you take the damage."

King's Knight's attack rebounded, striking Yugi's side of the field. The Pharaoh grunted, teeth gritting as holographic force hammered against his chest.

Yami's LP: 4000 → 2400.

Jack's Knight surged forward in a flash of steel and light, blade raised as Atem gave the command.

"Jack's Knight—strike down his face-down monster!"

The knight's sword came crashing down, slicing through the card in a burst of holographic energy.

The creature revealed beneath it let out a gnarled, guttural hiss before dissolving:

Doomdog Octhros.

(DEF 800)

Bakura's grin sharpened the moment its form cracked apart into violet smoke.

"Ohhh… excellent," he purred, spreading his arms as the shadows welcomed the fallen Fiend. "When Doomdog Octhros is sent to the Graveyard, I'm allowed to add a Level 8 Fiend to my hand."

A ghostly silhouette rose from the swirling shadows behind him—a towering, distorted shape with glowing chains and hollow eyes.

Bakura plucked a card from his deck with deliberate slowness.

"I choose… Dark Necrofear."

He held up the card, eyes gleaming with feverish delight.

"Every soul you send to my Graveyard only strengthens me, Pharaoh. How generous of you."

Atem's expression tightened, but he didn't hesitate.

"Queen's Knight—attack Bakura directly!"

Queen's Knight dashed forward in a crimson blur, her sword slicing through Bakura's holographic projection. Energy exploded across his side of the field.

Bakura staggered back half a step, his smirk curving even as the impact tore through him.

Bakura's LP: 4000 → 2500.

Yami exhaled, steadying his breath. He straightened, eyes never leaving Bakura's.

"I set one more card," he said calmly, sliding a third face-down in defense, "and end my turn. This duel isn't decided by luck, Bakura. Only by will."

Turn 4 – Bakura

Bakura drew, the Millennium Ring jostling with the motion like it was laughing with him.

"You always talk like that," he sneered. "It's adorable. I activate Dark Necrofear's effect in my hand!"

He held it up—an eerie female fiend, arms cross-bound with chains. "By banishing three Fiend-type monsters from my Graveyard, I can Special Summon her!"

Spectral chains shot from his Graveyard, dragging three ghostly shapes into Dark Necrofear's card. It glowed, then burst forward onto the field in a swirl of blue flame.

 (ATK 2200)

Bakura gestured grandly. "Now, Dark Necrofear—attack Queen's Knight!"

Necrofear soared forward, spectral chains trailing behind her. Yami's expression didn't change.

"Trap card open—Mirror Force!"

One of his face-downs flipped. A dome of light exploded from his side, shattering Necrofear into pieces that blew back over Bakura's field in a wave. The fiend's remains crashed into his empty zones and faded.

Bakura's grin only grew. "Perfect."

Rebecca blinked. "Perfect?!"

"Because," Bakura said, "when Dark Necrofear is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard… I can equip her to one of your monsters on the field., I get control of it during the end phase of my turn."

A ghostly version of Necrofear appeared, half-phased, clinging to Jack's Knight's back like a parasite.

Bakura's teeth flashed. "Exactly. I'll end my turn here. For now."

Jack Night goes over to Bakura field

Turn 5 – Yami Yugi

Yami drew.

I use the spell card pot of greed which allows me to draw two cards

"And I activate my Spell—Polymerization! I fuse Gazelle and Berfomet from my hand to Fusion Summon—Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast!"

Wind howled as the chimera dove from a swirl of light, wings spread wide.

 (ATK 2100)

"Battle! Chimera—attack Jack knight !"

The chimera surged forward, claws slashing. Again the Dark Sanctuary flared, the floating coin flipping in the air.

It landed in Yami's favor. No ghost face appeared to intercept it this time.

The attack crashed into Bakura's chest in a flare of energy. He staggered backward a step, teeth gritting.

Bakura's LP: 2500 → 2300.

On the other side of the barrier Joey pumped a fist. "There we go!"

Yami raised his hand. "King's Knight—attack Bakura directly as well!"

Chains flickered around Jack's Knight's limbs as Dark Necrofear's spirit clung, but the knight still charged. Again, Dark Sanctuary rolled its spectral die.

This time, a ghostly face leered up.

"Tsk, tsk," Bakura crooned. "Looks like your attack hurts you instead."

Energy ricocheted, blasting Yami's field once more. He grimaced but stood firm.

Yami's LP: 2400 → 900.

Rebecca swallowed. "He's cutting it so close…"

Odion's eyes were steady. "The Pharaoh knows his own limits."

Yami set another card and ended. Sweat beaded at his temple, but his gaze remained razor sharp.

Bakura chuckled quietly. "You're bleeding, Pharaoh. I like you this way."

Turn 6 – Bakura

He drew, and his grin went full predator.

"Time to end this little dance," he said. "First, I activate Destiny Board."

A spectral board appeared behind him, ancient letters shimmering.

"One by one, the Spirit Message cards will come," he crooned. "When they spell 'F-I-N-A-L'… your fate is sealed, and I win automatically."

The first letter, F, slid into place with a faint, chilling chime.

Joey cursed under his breath. "He's really goin' for the creepy death card victory…"

He set one more card and ended, calm as a hanging blade. "Tick-tock, Pharaoh. Your defeat is being spelled out… literally."
