"By the way, where's Jiang Yunyi? You didn't bring her with you today." Zhang Min set down her chopsticks. She'd expected to see all three of her old friends when she agreed to meet Feng Suyin.
Xia Lingling went quiet. Feng Suyin's face hardened. The muscle in her jaw twitched.
Jiang Yunyi must have known her husband's secret. From the looks of it, so did Xia Lingling.
"Yunyi said she had personal matters. An emergency." Xia Lingling's voice was careful. Measured.
Jiang Yunyi wasn't in the right state of mind. Needed time to figure out her next move. Xia Lingling wouldn't force her to talk. A marital problem like that — Yunyi had to handle it alone. Lingling had seen that look on her friend's face before. The one that said don't ask. So she didn't.
"Ah, doctors." Zhang Min sighed and scooped up more food. She chewed quickly, like she was afraid the plate would disappear. "I never get why Yunyi and Suyin chose that path, Lingling. Both of them are too smart to scrape by like us."
