Chapter 1 - Death Fantasy

After I woke up in this world, my life changed completely. Let's just say I was never a fan of this kind of story where you wake up in another world; I didn't even have a dream where that happened to me. But somehow I ended up in one of those, completely out of nowhere, after an extremely specific event that I can't quite remember; I can only remember that it was extremely frightening.

Was it fate or something? I believe I died at that moment, but I don't remember how I got to this hazy point of death or what killed me. I don't even know if it was tragic or if I died pathetically in an accident; maybe one of my clients murdered me after losing everything in a settlement, or maybe I killed myself.

In my past life, I was a lawyer, working primarily for companies owned by wealthy men who had nothing to lose but became desperate when it came to a few cents.

I think that because I've worked in the same field for so long, I feel a little obsessed with these people who seem to be on another level. Being surrounded by powerful people gives me peace of mind; it's as if I can observe them up close. Any other job seemed monotonous to me.

But here in the fantasy village I can't bring my diploma, I can only beg the king or someone important to accept me. It seems things work differently here; we still have kings and queens, but we've evolved with technology, and the buildings look like Gothic structures.

However, something worries me. This world has a completely different language, but somehow I can understand what they're saying. How? There are also people from different places and cultures who speak the same language, and even from different countries. This must be the novel's fault. Well… I should go in now.

— It was at that moment that the sky, darkening with alizarin-colored clouds, opened, and a great sphere of fire fell to earth. —

When I set foot on the palace steps, a bright red light flashed on the horizon, darkening the sky. My eyes burned for a moment; I had never felt anything like it, as if a beam of infrared light had been pierced into them.

The light didn't last long; there was a faint smell of burning near me, but there was no fire, only people who seemed to be experiencing those same sensations.

A loud bang echoed through the region, so loud it made the ground tremble, unsettling anyone still standing, stunned by the beam of light. Creatures that were common in that region began to scream aggressively.

The animals, which were mostly magical creatures like unicorns and basilisks, were extremely disoriented by the noise and bright lights; I saw one of them break free from a cart and run desperately around.

I could hear people shouting that the animals were out of control, they seemed desperate, but I thought it would pass, it was just a scare. Until I heard a desperate scream and the sound of a pegasus neighing.

"Daughter!" a woman shouted from afar.

All I could hear was the sound of something gelatinous and breaking at the same time. I don't know what it was; I didn't have the courage to look at first, but the screams stopped. Then I looked towards where the sound was coming from and saw a child beneath the paws of that horrendous creature. Its wings were torn and green; it looked like something evil, from hell.

The woman was in shock and couldn't even move because of it. I wanted to do something, but my mind went blank. What a horrible thing to witness.

That place was no longer safe, I could see it with my own eyes, a mother losing her daughter to a horrible creature. It sounded like a Pegasus, an extremely docile creature, but that thing, that thing was anything but sweet.

I needed to run, but my legs were paralyzed from the shock of seeing that scene; I felt them giving way, letting me down, and I fell backward.

What was happening? I couldn't understand, I just felt fear. That's when I heard more screams and neighing from animals. That region was known for having many types of horses; it couldn't be that they were all like that.

Suddenly, I hear the horsemen who watch over the region galloping in a battalion with their infantry, people dressed in white and gold, including healers and other elite officials.

A person approached me, asking if I was alright. I couldn't see their appearance; I just nodded, saying yes. It was all extremely confusing. Amidst the confusion, I saw them cutting off the head of a dog that was jumping towards them to attack. The dog no longer looked like a simple, cute animal with unusual features; it looked like a demon, a creature that shouldn't have been there!

— Come on, we have to go! — He grabbed my arm, pulling me as he ran towards his horse, which was dressed in white and gold.

"All the creatures are transforming!" I yelled as I felt my arm being pulled. I saw people being attacked by various monsters, and knights like her protecting those people!

"Is this something common?" I asked.

I received no answer, only a shake of the head that told me the question was stupid. She simply gestured for me to get on the horse, and she did the same herself.

But she seemed to know exactly what to do; it had become a possibility.

With strong gallops we drove away from the city, heading towards the woods to escape the chaos that was there. I looked back, observing all the destruction and the smoke coming from the restaurants in the area, and listening to the screams of people who might be suffering horrible things.

We managed to reach a clearing in the middle of the forest; it was much quieter and a bit further from the city. She was panting and seemed to be sweating under all that armor. She dismounted her horse and removed her helmet, revealing long blonde hair.

I stared silently at the woman who had saved my life; I owed her so much, but it also seemed like a common job for her.

They say that through one person's eyes we can be their whole world, but to us they are just another person, and that's how I felt.

In fact, she was very beautiful.

"What did you mean by 'This is something common'?" she asked me, her voice soft and velvety.

I felt my mind wander as I got caught up in thought, quickly returning to my senses.

"I thought you all seemed very prepared to fight that—" "Prepared?!" she interrupted me.

She walked in circles, her steps firm but uncertain, as if she were dancing a waltz while turning her head to the sky and placing her hands on her face.

"Did you see how many people were being killed?! Not even the elite gave a warning that we were being attacked!" You could feel his heart pounding harder.

"We only realized it because our base was attacked. On the way here, there were many wounded and creatures like the ones you saw. Nothing like this has ever happened before!" she continued. "But as knights, we must protect the people."

I stayed quiet. Are all fantasy stories like this? She seemed anxious and exhausted. I wanted to comfort her somehow, but I didn't know what to do, or even if she wanted that.

— We need to go, the sun is about to set.
