Ezra almost throws what is supposed to be his lightsaber at the door of his and Zeb's quarters.
When the door opens and reveals Sabine standing there with a hand on her right hip, the other crosses over her stomach while there is a little smirk on her face.
"Still having trouble with your "blaster" kid?" Sabine uses a special emphasis on the words blaster and kid.
"Go away Sabine!" Ezra shouts and turns away from the young woman, who frowns softly.
"I don't get why it can only shoot stun shots that don't go more than ten feet from it before dispersing completely!" Ezra groans in complaint to himself and Sabine enters the bunk room and gently ruffles Ezra's thick shoulder length blue hair.
Ezra looks up and over his shoulder making eye contact with Sabine. Sabine feels her heart clenching at the sight of moisture building up in the corners of Ezra's eyes.
"Can you help me Sabine? What if something like today happens again and someone…if you die because I couldn't shoo-"
"Shh, I'll help." Sabine presses a finger against Ezra's lips and gently takes the lightsaber that basically has a light frame and stunner slingshooter mounted on it.
"So the first thing you need to realize is that the stunner toy you used to have on your gauntlet isn't a blaster. It's not meant to go more than ten feet. You're expecting high performance from subpar parts. Come with me short stack I've got a couple of spare 35's for parts in my quarters." Sabine offers with a smile and can't help the way her heart flutters at Ezra's earnest smiling face.
'By Mandalore, why does he have to be so adorable and short?!' Sabine curses in her head a bit of sway to her hips leaking into her walk.
Once in her quarters Sabine starts taking out tools and parts, and a mostly salvageable Westar 35 blaster pistol.
"Hey Kid, watch closely as I break this down, and then walk me through breaking down a lightsaber."
Sabine takes the Westar apart to the point that all of the internals are completely stripped from the frame and housing.
Then Sabine has Ezra walk her through dismantling his lightsaber, and though she doesn't know much about the weapons of the Jedi and Sith. But she knows weapons having designed and built them since she was a child…and Ezra's lightsaber looks more like a pipe detonator with a faulty triggering device rather than a reliable weapon.
"Remind me to help you anytime you try to make anything yourself again, Ezra…this thing could have detonated at a harsh bump."
"Shut up, Sabine!" Ezra snaps and turns away from her knowing look, that has his cheeks turning a deep red.
"So the basic idea that you had is good, not only are you disguising your weapon to look like a plasma cutter. But you're also giving yourself a versatile weapon." Sabine hums softly while grabbing a datapad and stylus and begins sketching out a rough diagram.
"Th-thanks Sabine." Ezra murmurs like a shy little boy which draws a soft giggle from Sabine.
"Don't worry about it Short-Stack, grab my blaster out of its holster and tell me how the grip feels in your hands." Sabine offers back before telling Ezra to do something which makes the teenage boy pout.
But Ezra does as he's told, and through the reflection of the mirror on her desk Sabine can't help but idly think of how good Ezra looks holding a Mandalorian blaster in his hands.
A little bout of daydreaming has her picturing him in an armor forged and painted by her hands, he's taller than her in the daydream. And she sees the smile on her own face at Ezra having his arm wrapped around her waist, as he leans in to kiss her.
Sabine quickly banishes that fantasy. "I like it…it feels natural."
Sabine smirks at the disbelief in Ezra's voice and sets to work.
Hours pass as the young woman and young teenage boy work together on making a real blaster/lightsaber hybrid that has elements of Mandalorian design aesthetics.
Hera looks in on the two youngest members of her crew, a soft smile appearing on her face as she leans against the doorframe.
"Well, I think that's all we can do with what we have…once we land and do some beta testing we can improve the design better. Maybe we can even talk Hera and Kanan into going to Mandalore so we can get a real weaponsmith to make you a custom weapon frame that doesn't look so horrific." Sabine mutters and hands off the frankly Frankenstein monster looking beefed up Westar-35 blaster to Ezra.
Who in turn throws himself as Sabine hugging her and giving her a quick kiss on her cheek.
Which draws a startled laugh out of Hera, both Ezra and Sabine's heads whip in Hera's direction. The look of absolute mortification on Ezra's face makes Hera's heart clench before he ducks his head and runs out of Sabine's quarters.
