Emilia Clarke talks about Daniel Adler visiting the Game of Thrones set.

The clip starts in the middle of a press interview for Game of Thrones Season 2. Emilia Clarke sits across from the interviewer, smiling brightly.
INTERVIEWER:
"Daniel Adler, the author of the books, is also very involved with the show. Does he visit when you're filming?"
Emilia laughs immediately, shaking her head.
EMILIA:
"He does visit. This time, not so much. In Season 1, he was there a lot. He's actually very nice, but it is intimidating when he visits the set."
INTERVIEWER:
"Really?"
EMILIA:
"Yeah. I mean, it's intimidating because, you know, he's the author. He's the person who created all of this. And also, it's Daniel fucking Adler."
The interviewer laughs. The crew behind the camera laughs too.
EMILIA:
"Sorry, can I say that?"
INTERVIEWER:
"Yes, yes, you can."
Emilia laughs harder.
EMILIA:
"And I'm standing there thinking, oh my god, he hated it. He absolutely hated it. Then after a while I finally worked up the courage to ask him, 'Was that okay?' And he just looks at me like I asked the strangest question in the world and goes, 'Oh yeah, I loved it.'
"And I'm like, you could have moved one facial muscle...."
She laughs again.
INTERVIEWER:
"Has he told you how your character ends up, you know, by the end of the series, since the books have not been completed yet?"
EMILIA:
"No, I think only he knows for now and no one else…I remember this one specific conversation with him. I was talking to him and said something like, 'You know, this is such a big series. I was told this could take ten seasons, so that's very exciting.'"
She pauses for effect.
EMILIA:
"And he goes, 'Oh yeah, it's going to be long.'"
She lowers her voice, imitating Daniel.
EMILIA AS DANIEL:
"'Not sure you're going to be in it that long, though.'"
The interviewer bursts out laughing.
Emilia laughs too, then points at the camera.
EMILIA:
"I hope that was a joke, Daniel. I really hope that was a joke."
The clip ends with Emilia still laughing while the interviewer looks half-amused and half-horrified.

Black screen.
A man gasps awake.
His eyes snap open.
He is lying beneath a weirwood tree, covered in mud and blood, his chest rising and falling too fast. The white bark looms above him, its carved red face watching.
The man scrambles backward, terrified.
His hands shake.
The sounds of battle rise.
Steel.
Screams.
Rain.
Fire.
[00:14]
Flashes.
The man fighting in a muddy field.
A spear going through his side.
An Ironborn axe coming down.
A knight laughing as blood spills into the grass.
The same man falling again and again.
Dead.

The Arcanum logo appears.
Music begins low, built from drums, strings, and a distant choir.

Text appears over a map of Westeros.
A THOUSAND YEARS BEFORE THE GAME OF THRONES...
The map burns inward toward the Riverlands.
THE AGE OF THE JUSTMAN KINGS ENDED.
A crown falls into the mud.
THE KINGDOM OF THE RIVERS AND HILLS BROKE APART.
Banners rise over castles.

A player kneels before a lord and accepts a sword.

The player robs a tax caravan with outlaws.

The player stands on a battlefield as soldiers raise his banner.

The music swells.

A warband charging through a burning gate.
A raven landing on a bloodstained crown.

The player standing before a gathered army.

A roar is heard.

Not a Souls game. The combat looked very Dark Souls, but the world systems looked more like an RPG/sandbox thing.

The graphics look good, man. I think this is a next-gen title. No way current gen can handle these graphics and those battle scenes.

I don't think it's that simple. The trailer showed the enemy who killed you basically having a castle the next time you see him. He also had the player's armor, too. The world changes a lot after you "die." That's not normal Souls respawning.

Dragons existed before the Targaryens came to Westeros. Could be Valyrian-related, like the Freehold is still there and hasn't been destroyed. That's one of the things I'm excited about with this game.

"The thing is, all the main characters are still alive," I said, sitting back in the chair onstage.
The audience reacted immediately. A wave of groans, boos, and scattered laughter moved through the room.
I raised both hands. "What?"
The boos got louder.
I laughed.
Someone near the front shouted, "Robb!"
That made the whole room react again.
I pointed toward the general direction of the voice.
"Robb was never really that essential."
The audience booed even louder. I leaned into the microphone, smiling.
"Ned either."
That nearly caused a riot.
I laughed harder.
"I mean, come on," I said. "You know I'm right."
I was at a week-long book event where authors had panels, Q&As, interviews, and signings, and today was the day I had to be there. I had not done one of these in a while, but After the Feast was coming out soon, and this was all part of the promotional push.
There was also Season 2 of Game of Thrones, which would be released in a week.
This was refreshing, especially after last week, when I watched The Last Jedi and had to deal with Lucasfilm and Disney. Oh my God, the movie was somehow even worse than I expected. Maybe that was because it was an early cut and still had all the scenes that were going to be deleted later, but it was just bad. I really hoped it would be in a watchable state by release, at least close to how it had been in my old world, but damn.
I had even told Iger that it needed a lot of work, and that seemed to buy me more hostility from some people at Lucasfilm. Like, can a man not be honest?
But that was behind me now. I would not have to deal with that for a couple of months.
The question that started all of this had been about character deaths. Specifically, why I kept killing so many fan favorites.
Especially Robb.
The moderator asked if the series had a main character.
"That is the trick, isn't it?"
The audience settled.
"Because if I told you that directly, it would be a much less interesting series."
A few people laughed.
I leaned forward.
"You could make this entire story into a two-hour movie if you wanted. You could make it Jon's unlikely hero journey from unknown bastard to whatever he becomes. Or you could make it Daenerys' rise as the Mother of Dragons, ending slavery before beginning her conquest. Those are both clear, powerful, very traditional story structures."
I paused.
"And they would be much less interesting."
The audience reacted with a mix of laughter and murmurs.
"Not bad," I added quickly. "Just less interesting to me."
I explained that while Jon and Daenerys might seem like the main characters, even they were not safe. Anything could happen. I would not compromise the entire story for shock value, but I liked keeping everyone on their toes.
The next question came from a woman near the middle of the room.
"Do you have a favorite character?"
There was an immediate shift in the audience.
That was one of those questions fans loved to ask because they thought the answer might mean something. Maybe it would reveal who was safe. Maybe it would reveal who mattered more. Maybe it would become evidence in some long forum thread about endgame theories.
"Well," I said, "I'll say it's Jon."
The audience reacted instantly.
Some applause. Some murmurs.
In my head, I was thinking about how much worse that answer would make things when he died in the next book.
I could not wait for that book to be finished. One of the reasons I had been working faster on the next book was so I could see the reactions to Jon's death. I planned not to publish the last two books until at least four years later, after I was done with DC, so they would have to wait, like the Percy Jackson fans.
Oh, and Season 3 was next year, so I was looking forward to the collective insanity from show watchers when they finally saw the Red Wedding. It was going to be beautiful.
"On that subject, is there any character you would never kill?" the moderator asked.
The audience reacted again, louder this time.
"That is a dangerous question."
I pretended to think about it for a moment.
"Let's just say I am not allowed to kill off Sansa or Arya."
The audience laughed.
I continued, "Both happen to be the favorite characters of two very important women in my life, so I have been informed that killing either of them would be a mistake."
More laughter.
"I am not going to poke that bear."
The room laughed harder.
Then I lifted a finger.
"Or," I added, "I could be lying right now to set all of you up."
The audience groaned.
I smiled.
"You see? This is why I enjoy doing this."
More questions followed after that.
Some were about Percy Jackson. A few people asked about The Lost Hero, Jason, Piper, Leo, and whether Percy would remain central to the coming books.
Other questions circled back to A Song of Ice and Fire. The situation in the North. Daenerys' journey in the last book. Whether Tyrion was becoming more evil. Whether the Others were symbolic of climate change, death, existential dread, or just very rude ice zombies.
Then someone near the back stood at the microphone and asked, "Do you think you'll ever write science fiction? Since you're doing a Star Wars movie now, I was wondering if that interest might translate into a new novel."
That made me pause.
Not because I did not have an answer.
Because I did.
"Yeah," I said.
The room reacted immediately. A wave of murmurs and surprised applause.
I smiled.
"I actually am planning to write a full novel set in space."
The murmurs got louder.
"But," I said quickly, holding up a hand, "do not expect something like Star Wars."
A few people laughed.
"It's going to be different. Smaller in some ways. More science-driven. Still hopefully fun. But yes, that is something I want to do soon."
The book, of course, was Project Hail Mary.
Or at least my version of it. I planned to finish it by the end of 2020.
Maybe 2021.
Hopefully.
A man at the microphone asked, "Do you have a release date for that?"
I laughed before he even finished.
"No."
The audience laughed with me.
"No, no. I am not doing that anymore."
I leaned back in my chair.
"I remember what happened when I promised a date six years ago."
The room laughed louder.
"People went crazy and I know some of you are here."
The audience laughed again.
