"You finished early."
"...You could tell?"
"Rel, you finished the law paper before lunch." He dropped down onto the grass beside me without asking.
"Bazz was still writing when they called time. He's currently having a crisis in the canteen. Camila's feeding him."
"Sounds about right."
"Mm."
We sat for a bit.
The academy behind us was doing its evening noise, the distant clatter of the dining hall and someone's music from an open dorm window, and out in front of us the training fields ran flat and empty down to the trees.
Then Jan said:
"You knew what it was."
"...?"
I didn't answer straight away.
"The other night," he said.
"On the steps. I had it out and you came round the corner, and I put it away, and you said 'get some sleep.'"
He was looking straight ahead, not at me.
"You didn't ask."
"...Ask what?"
"Anything." He turned his head.
