Chapter 900 - The City Says Its Own Name

Vey found the casualty board beneath a dead suit and three pieces of Meren's west wall.

The suit had folded around the board during the collapse. Its fingers covered the bottom row, where somebody had written two missing brewery workers in blue grease. Vey put his boot through the dead wrist and freed the board without wiping either name.

Across the top, old black paint read Oltin Civil Pulse Corps. A newer strip beneath it read West Four, because districts changed faster than boards.

A burial clerk reached for it. "Command needs every confirmed death before the east gate closes."

"Command gets the board after somebody checks the missing against the east outlet."

The clerk held on. "Survivor payments stop when this board arrives without confirmation."

That made the argument useful. Vey let him keep one side and carried the other toward the brewery stairs.
