Chapter 1 - Her Choice

"It was a pleasure to burn for their sake."

Those were the last words Vanteen spoke before the chains tightened around her wrists.

The courtroom erupted in cheers as holy flames crawled over the iron shackles, stripping away the immortality she had possessed since birth. Once feared as the Queen of Darkness, Vanteen stood motionless beneath the judgment of those who celebrated her downfall.

To them, she was the villain who had plunged the immortal realm into war.

The monster who deserved no mercy.

None of them knew the truth.

None of them knew she had spent her entire life carrying a darkness that was never hers to begin with.

"The court has reached its verdict," the High Judge declared. "Vanteen, former heir of the Dark Kingdom, you are hereby stripped of your immortality and sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against both realms."

A murmur of satisfaction spread through the hall.

Vanteen lowered her head without protest.

She had stopped asking for justice long ago.

Months passed within the damp stone walls of the abandoned fortress where she was imprisoned.

The castle had once belonged to forgotten kings. Now, it existed for only one purpose to ensure no prisoner ever escaped.

Ancient runes sealed every entrance.

An unbreakable barrier surrounded the grounds.

Beyond the walls, a colossal dragon watched over the ruins, reducing any intruder to ash before they could even glimpse the gates.

Escape was impossible.

One stormy night, the silence of the dungeon was broken by the cry of a newborn.

Vanteen cradled the tiny child against her chest, tears blurring her vision.

"My little Lucia..."

The baby wrapped her tiny fingers around Vanteen's thumb, completely unaware of the cold prison she had entered.

For the first time in years, Vanteen smiled.

Not because she had hope.

Because she finally had something worth living for.

The next morning, the prison guards arrived with her daily meal.

Vanteen hurried toward the bars, holding Lucia carefully in her arms.

"Please," she begged, her voice trembling. "Take her."

The guards exchanged uneasy glances.

"She's innocent."

No one answered.

"She hasn't done anything wrong. She shouldn't spend her life in this place because of my mistakes."

One guard looked away.

Another scoffed.

"The daughter of the Dark Queen is hardly innocent."

"No!" Vanteen cried. "She isn't like me."

One of the guards stepped closer.

"That's exactly what your mother probably said about you."

His words struck harder than any blade.

Before she could speak again, the guards turned their backs and walked away.

The heavy iron door slammed shut, echoing through the dungeon.

Vanteen slowly sank to the floor, holding Lucia against her heart.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, kissing the child's forehead.

"I'm so... so sorry."

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

The prison rations grew smaller, barely enough for Vanteen herself.

She quietly gave most of the food to Lucia, enduring her own hunger so her daughter could survive another day.

The little girl laughed despite everything.

She reached for the rays of sunlight that slipped through the narrow window each morning, as if the darkness surrounding them simply didn't exist.

Watching her was both Vanteen's greatest comfort...

and her greatest sorrow.

One evening, the oldest prison guard lingered outside the cell after delivering their meal.

Unlike the others, he never mocked her.

He simply watched.

"You'll starve if you keep feeding her first," he said.

Vanteen smiled faintly.

"Then I'll starve."

The old guard remained silent.

After a long pause, he knelt beside the bars.

"What is her name?"

"...Lucia."

"A beautiful name."

"It means light."

His expression softened.

"Strange."

"What is?"

"The woman they call the darkest soul in history named her daughter after light."

Vanteen looked down at the sleeping child.

"Perhaps because I always hoped she'd never become like me."

For the first time since her imprisonment...

The old guard unlocked the food basket once more.

Without a word, he slipped an extra loaf of bread through the bars.

Their eyes met.

It wasn't forgiveness.

But it was kindness.

And sometimes...

Kindness was enough to keep hope alive.

Hope never lasted long.

It arrived quietly...

and left in screams.

The night was unusually still.

Lucia slept peacefully in Vanteen's arms while rain tapped gently against the narrow dungeon window.

The old guard had just finished his rounds.

"I'll bring extra milk tomorrow," he whispered before turning to leave.

Vanteen smiled gratefully.

"Thank you."

He gave a small nod and disappeared into the corridor.

Silence returned.

Then

A deafening explosion shook the entire fortress.

The stone walls trembled.

Dust rained from the ceiling as the prison echoed with terrified shouts.

"What was that?" Vanteen gasped.

Another explosion.

Far closer this time.

The protective runes carved into the dungeon walls flickered violently before several of them shattered into glowing fragments.

Someone had broken through the barrier.

Impossible...

The dragon roared outside.

Its cry shook the castle to its foundation.

Metal clashed against metal.

Magic illuminated the darkness beyond the cell.

The battle had reached the prison.

The old guard sprinted back toward the dungeon, breathing heavily.

"They breached the outer gate!" he shouted. "Stay away from the bars!"

Before Vanteen could respond, every torch lining the corridor extinguished at once.

Darkness swallowed everything.

A pair of crimson eyes appeared at the end of the hallway.

Slow.

Steady.

Watching.

Footsteps echoed through the silence.

One.

Two.

Three.

Each step carried an overwhelming pressure that made it difficult to breathe.

Even the old guard instinctively stepped back.

"Who are you?" he demanded, drawing his sword.

The stranger never answered.

A black cloak concealed every feature except those burning crimson eyes.

The air itself seemed to bend around him.

Vanteen immediately knew.

This wasn't an ordinary immortal.

This was someone far stronger.

The old guard charged first.

Steel met darkness.

One strike.

One movement.

The guard was thrown across the corridor as if he weighed nothing.

He crashed into the wall with a painful groan.

"No!" Vanteen cried.

The stranger stopped before her cell.

For several long seconds...

He simply stared at Lucia.

The baby looked back at him without fear.

Something unreadable crossed the stranger's expression.

Pity.

Regret.

Or perhaps recognition.

Then it vanished.

He raised his hand.

Ancient symbols ignited beneath Vanteen's feet.

"No..." she whispered.

She knew that spell.

There was only one destination.

"The Mortal Realm," she breathed.

The circle of light expanded around her.

The stranger finally spoke.

His voice was calm.

Cold.

"This is where you belong."

The spell erupted.

Vanteen screamed as invisible chains wrapped around her body, pulling her toward the portal opening beneath the prison floor.

She reached desperately toward Lucia.

"Lucia!"

The baby burst into tears.

"No!"

With the last of her remaining magic, Vanteen stretched out her trembling hand toward her daughter.

A silver bracelet slipped from her wrist and landed beside Lucia.

Attached to it was a folded letter.

"Live..."

Her voice broke.

"Live the life I couldn't give you."

The light swallowed her.

Then

She was gone.

The dungeon fell silent.

Lucia cried louder than before.

The old guard forced himself to stand despite his injuries.

Blood stained his uniform as he stumbled toward the child.

"I'm sorry..." he whispered.

"I'm so sorry."

He gently lifted Lucia into his arms.

Outside, the castle continued collapsing.

The protective barrier was failing.

If he stayed any longer...

Neither of them would survive.

Gathering what little magic remained within him, the old guard placed one trembling hand against the stone floor.

A small circle of blue light appeared.

A portal.

It flickered weakly.

"I can only do this once," he murmured.

He tucked the bracelet and the letter safely beside Lucia.

"Your mother trusted me with one final promise."

The portal began collapsing almost as quickly as it formed.

The old guard smiled sadly at the little girl.

"Take this."

His voice cracked.

"It will guide you."

He gently placed Lucia through the portal just as the blue light started fading.

"That was your mother's last wish."

The portal closed.

The dungeon became silent once more.

Only the distant sound of the dragon's final roar echoed through the ruins.

And somewhere beyond the worlds...

A little girl opened her eyes.
