Chapter 285
My mother's voice broke through my thoughts. "Alayna, you're scaring me."
I looked at her. "I'm trying to figure out who sent this."
"And?"
I shook my head. "I don't know. There are too many possibilities. Too many people who might want to hurt me."
"Then we wait for your father. We call the police. We—"
"No." I stood up. "I'm not going to wait. I'm not going to hide."
"Then what are you going to do?"
I stared at the dead bird on the table. The white flowers. The crown. The message it carried. The dead eyes seemed to stare back at me, mocking me. Taunting me.
"I'm going to find out who sent this," I said quietly. "And I'm going to make them regret it."
My mother gripped my arm. "Alayna, please. Think about this. Whoever sent this is dangerous. They're threatening your life. Your wedding."
"I know." I looked at her. "That's exactly why I have to do something."
"Then let me come with you."
"No. I'm going to Dafa. He'll know what to do."
