Chapter 1 - WHO IS FATHER?

CHAPTER ONE (1)

Morenikeji Ayobami wakes up to the smell of breakfast with a smile on her face. She looks up at her husband. "Good morning my dear husband please tell me that nice smelling plate of food belongs to me." laughs. She sits up He pecks her husband and takes the plate of food. "Thanks. You are all dressed up. I thought you said you aren't going to the clinic this morning." "I didn't   plan to, dad called that there is an emergency meeting and we all have to attend. I promise to return early though." "I can call him" He shakes his head. "You know how dad is, I don't want you getting upset. I will call Dami to come over to stay with you till I am back." "Dami isn't my husband kayode. I need you around not my sister-in-law" "You are already getting upset Keji calm down. Please for the baby's sake." "The baby will be due soon and it will his or her dad around when it is on his way into the world for the first time. Kayode what if there are complications and Dami isn't here yet." He realizes that it is one of her panic attacks. "My love, everything is going to be ok." "How do you know?" "GOD TOLD ME. He promised that he is in control." Her expression changes. Kayode knows that his wife is not a person who believes in the big man in the sky according to her words.  He knows something happened in her past and that it must have affected a lot of her outlook on a lot of things except including her believe in God. "Keji to get past this matter you need to talk about it. What happened to you?" She looks away tears in her eyes. "I am sorry. I promise to be back early. Promise me you will be fine." "I promise. Now hurry on, so you won't be scolded." We share a laugh. I kiss her and leaves. On my way, I call my sister. "I will leave as soon as I finish my breakfast brother." "Oh, mom says she will also come with me. Do not worry, we won't leave her alone." "Ok thanks. Can you please give her the phone." I hear her passing the phone. "Oko mi, OluwaKayodemi. How are this morning and how is Keji?" "Mommy. How are you this morning?" "I am good, how is Keji?" "Sincerely mom I am worried about her. She's running." "From what?" "I wish I know; I wish she will just tell me what the matter is mom, or do you think I am doing something wrong that makes it hard for people to trust me?" "It's not by power nor by might son, you shouldn't lean on your own understanding ask God for directions. It will have been so much if she was in Christ." "Yes, mom that is true, I am not sure why God chose me but I love my wife." "I know you do. One just as to look at you two to see that. I will see you when you get back. Have a nice day."

CHAPTER TWO (2)

I am at home after Kayode left for the office. I sometime hate my father-in-law for not considering me when he calls him away for duty. I know that he never believed I am the one for his son so he doesn't treat me like his daughter-in-law. He preaches love and oneness but does not practice what he preaches. He treats me this way because I am not a believer. But my mother-in-law and Dami has been great. My past defines me, that is what was hammered into my hears as a child growing up. My past, it isn't something I like to talk about or even remember it is something I will like to put behind me. I rub my belly feeling my baby move and smiling to myself happily. Knowing my son will not go through what I did as a child is enough to keep me happy. Kayode is good to me and I am sure he will love his children. The doorbell rings and my mother-in-law and Dami comes in. I rise immediately. "Mother, good morning" "Good morning Keji, how are you and my grandchild this morning." "We are fine thanking you. Please come in." They come in. Dami is Kayode's big sister. Happily married with 2 children, Dayo and Bayo twins. Mama was sick so Dami had gone to help my father-in-law in taking care of mama. "I am about preparing breakfast. Wil you like some?" "We already had ours. What will you like to have, I will prepare it. Kayode told us you suffered another panic attack." "I am sorry to have bothered you all, I can't help it sometimes." They smile, before long we are settled having fun. I had forgotten about my father-in-law's ill treatment of me. 4hrs later, while we all are preparing lunch Kayode arrives. He joins us in the kitchen, "Hello how are my 3 favorite people?"  I walk up to him. "Welcome back Kayode mi, how was your day?" He pulls me into a big hug. "I am sorry about earlier, I already told daddy I am not coming back to work if it isn't really necessary and they do not have a choice." "But you are a doctor, how about your patients. I have handed them over to another doctor, if he needs help, he will contact, right now I want to focus on you and our son, you are my priority." Mother clears her throat. "Ok lovebirds, we are also here." We both laugh. AT the dinning later, I feel uneasy. Then my water breaks. "Uhm everyone, I think my water just broke. Their spoon stops midway. "Are you sure about that?" The first contraction hits and I squirm nodding. Kayode face gets cloudy immediately, if not for the pain I am in, I will have laughed. "Ok you two should calm down, where are the baby things Keji?" "I will get them, please help her to the car. We drive to our family clinic.

CHAPTER THREE (3)

I look at my wife as she lay on the bed asleep. It is a very happy day for me. Even the issue between myself and my dad got resolved and he apologizes sincerely for the way he has been treating keji. He was even one of the doctors that delivered. My son really takes after his mother. I smile now understanding the way my dad feels, the feel of overprotection. Keji stares awake. The first thing that comes out of her mouth is her nickname for me." Kayode mi." I sit up my face brightening at the sight of her. "Keji, hi. Welcome back." "I remember a little bundle. Where's our son?" I move to his cot and picks him up, walks back to her and hands him over to her. "Hello, little one. My name is Morenikeji Jasmine Ayobami and this is your dad…." She says taking my hand. "OluwaKayode Mokorede Ayobami. You have a grandpa, grandma, aunt, uncle and cousins. I am going to call you Remilekun Joshua Jeromy Ayobami. After your grandfathers." This surprises me. That is the first thing I will hear of her family. "Your dad's name is Jeromy?" She nods. "Jeromy Peter Akintola. He died when I was six years old." I drop the topic though I am happy she is finally opening up. That's the most I know about her past. She's about to say something when my family comes in. "Keji you are finally awake. Good to see you healthy. She laughs and then I noticed that this is the first full hearted laugh I have heard from her. The baby is truly a miracle boy. My dad comes in with a bouquet of Red and golden roses in his right and tulips in his left. "I know I haven't been the best father figure, but I am hoping we can start all over." "No problem, sir. Nothing in this universe will make me happier. I do like flowers my dad always got me one when I was a little girl. Roses for me, tulips for momma." "Where are they?" "Special daddy died when I was 6." She says and stops the line of conversation with her no uncertain tone we all know to well. "Dad, everyone meets my son, OluwaRemilekun Joshua Jeromy Ayobami." The look in my dad's eyes tells me he also sees the connection. He turns to me mouthing, we need to talk. I nod. Three days later, my wife and son are discharged to go back home with me. We all go to my parents, to spend the holidays. My dad and I start to look into Keji's background. We want to find out what is going on with her.

2 years as dad and I drive back home I am still in shock. "You don't have to keep everything buckled up if something is up, ok I know what's up. Why are they driving back with us?" "I am going to confront her and if they are with me, she won't be able to deny it.  I can't believe this. She said she's an orphan." "Kayode, I advise you take it easy and hear her own side of things before you take a drastic decision that you will regret. I nod. "Ok let us do it this way, I will drop you at home, while I and the Bamise's return to our home. Have a word with her, we join you after 2hrs and be careful." "Thanks dad."

I am home with Remilekun reading a child's novel to him when Kay drives in. "Mama papa is back" "Yes baby. He comes in. "Papa!!!" Our son calls, because of the environment I grew up in, I know he isn't in a good mood and I become scared. "Esther?'' He calls our domestic staff. "Have this money, take Remi and Quadric the 3 of you should go have the dinner. Don't stay too long." This makes me more nervous. "Kay Is something wrong?" "Oh, I don't know junior, you tell me." "You met my adoptee's?" I ask. He faces me shocked. "They are the only ones that call me junior. Look I can explain it is a long story." "Of course, You can." He hisses and walks out angrily. He enters his study shutting the door. "Are you really shutting me out because of strangers. He does not answer. I leave the study's entrance. I enter the room and is surprised. I drop my tray of fruits.

I remember what dad said about giving keji a chance to speak for herself. I hear something drop and Keji yelp. I hear hushed voices. Her and a male voice. I keep hearing her repeat father. Leave us alone, I am never returning to the home, so excuse me. She sounds scared. I decide to intervene. "Keji, darling. It's everything ok? Open the door." "You see what you've done." I hear the man's voice echo angrily. I hear the window open and Keji scream, then a thud. That does not sound good. I hear a car start and Esther scream. I run downstairs and the scene I meet freezes my blood, Keji is laying on the floor with blood flowing from her head and Quadric too at the gate shot in the leg. My parents, the Bamise's arrive with Dami and Ade. Dami takes my son and my mom leads Esther inside. I and dad run to Keji's limp body. I check her vitals while dad checks her wound. "What happened?'' "We had an intruder. Please attend to Quadric." "Who was it?" That is Sope, her foster brother asking. "I do not know. Please call an ambulance. Dad, please help me. Quadric are you ok?'' "Yay oga. Madam dey ok?" I couldn't answer that. The ambulance arrives and we drive over to the hospital.

CHAPTER 4

I pace the waiting room, nervous, they succeeded in removing the bullet from Quadric's leg. I wish I could go in to check on the progress. "What happened?" "I do not know. After confronting her, and she was acting nonchalantly, I went into my study to await your arrival. Not too long afterwards, I hear her and someone arguing in low tones. I couldn't really make out what was being said, but she kept repeating the word father. At a point, she raises her voice a little saying he should let her be. This is when I decide to interfere. I try opening the bedroom door, but she locked it. Then an angry voice says, you see what you've done. Then the window opens and I hear Esther scream. The rest you know." Sope paces. "When we were kids and she stayed with us, Jasmine is always having nightmares and she keeps repeating the word *Father* in it. I usually thought she was thinking of her late dad." "No, he's special daddy. The 2 times she ever mentioned him that is what she called him." "Then who is father and what is Keji running from." Ade says coming in. "Mom and Dami are keeping Remi and Esther busy." We nod. "Before us, she was a street child maybe some street lord." I don't think so, but Keji alone can shine some light on this situation. The doctor treating her comes out. "She's going to be alright, thankfully, there is no serious injury done. A little cut on her head, and a twisted wrist and ankle. It seems she must have tried directing the impact to her hands and legs." "Alright thank you doctor, but how about a concussion?" "We have treated her incase of that and after she wakes, we will do an x-ray on her to be sure and be on the safe side. Also, when she wakes, do not serve any liquid until she tested in any case of internal bleeding. Congratulations once again. Please excuse me." The doctor leaves. The next morning, we are allowed to go check on her. What we meet takes us all by surprise. My wife Morenikeji Jasmine Ayobami is praying.

After Kayode knocked on the door, father jumps out the window taking me with him. Thank God for the few things I learnt concerning protecting yourself in such situation. I made him a body shield and we fall after which he pushes me off me a couple feet from the floor then I used my hand instead. I blacked after hitting my head on the flower vase. I dream of heaven the place where special daddy thought me about at the beginning of my life and special daddy himself. "Little flower." He said calling me my childhood pet name. "Special daddy.!!!" I call and goes to hug him. Crying profusely. "You are all grown up. How are you?" Then his countenance changed. "Jasmine, you need to go back, it isn't your time yet." "No dad I want to stay with you. Please don't send me away." "If you choose to stay you won't be with me still, you will end up in the lake of fire forever. You kept malice against your creator, you have grieved the holy spirit." "I do not want to end up in hell, I want to be happy and make it to heaven, but what can I do?" "GO BACK!!! Talk about what is grieving your heart. The devil hates a united family and you are giving him a foothold in your home. Go back Jasmine, go back my little flower, I love you." "I don't know how" "Open your mouth and he will fill it with words, but first open that beautiful mouth." He leaves in a bright light that makes me bow my head hiding my eyes, opening it I am in zan hospital and taers are running down my cheeks. "Lord Jesus, it is me, Jasmine. I am sorry about my transgression, please I am sorry for grieving and hurting your beloveds. I am lord please have mercy and accept me back into your flock. I leave FATHER to you deal with him as I surrender my all. In Jesus name I pray." I hear a chorus of amen and I open my eyes and I am surrounded by everyone I have ever loved in my life, except my biological parent. Kayode is by my sided the minute he realizes I am awake. "Keji, darling. Are you awake?" I open my eyes and stare at his worried gaze. "Hi, yes, I am awake. Please help me sit up." He puts his hands around me and lifts me off the bed as I sit up. "I turn to the Bamise's. "Sope, papa. Good evening." "Jasmine, Good morning. You don't seem surprised." "I know Kay found you." I look away. I feel Kay's hand on my shoulder. "Are you in pain?" I shake but this brings a splitting headache. He rings my bedside bed. "A nurse will come take you for Xray." "We need to talk, all of us." "Why are you so cold? Jasmine you are acting like an emotionless machine." "You know nothing about me, so don't act high and mighty around me. You aren't the judge of me." "Really, after the disappearing stunt you pulled back then." "You know what I think I should have stayed so you will be on this bed not me." "What are you talking about?" I withdraw this side is my defensive. I know they are mad at me and I am not ready for this so I am going on the offensive. That evening Dami and mother-in-law arrives with Remi. I am really happy to see my son. All this while I am still wondering how to do what special dad said. Open up, he had said, I have shut myself in for way too long and I have no idea how to loosen up. "Oh God please help me."

CHAPTER 5

Two months later, Keji has been discharged from the hospital. Since she became conscious after the attack. Earlier this afternoon, she had called me and asked I contacted our extended family and the Bamise's, she wants us to meet all of us later in the evening. I and the Bamise's arrive together while she's in the kitchen with our son. I join them. "Good afternoon…" I greet I enter. Keji turns to me smiling, the first one I have seen on her since the attack. "Hi love, welcome back. Please did you deliver my message?" "Yes, your foster parents returned with me." A sad smile crosses her face. Dayo comes into the kitchen and the cousins leave the kitchen together as Remi has come to adore his older cousins. I walk up to her and takes her by the waist. She freezes then relaxes to my touch. "Shouldn't you shower before the meeting?" "I will. Let me enjoy this moment with you." She turns to face me. "I am sorry about the way I have treated you all these past months. You will understand this night. I want to tell you the story of my life. I want to tell you about "Morenikeji Jasmine Akinwale. Me. So please go freshen up and keep our family busy, food is almost ready. Please send Sope or Dami in. I need help." "Sure, I will send Dami." We laugh and I go in. I take a cold shower, change into something casual. 30 minutes later, I return to the family. The dinning is set. Quadric and Esther are also there. "Good evening, sir." "Good evening to you both." We all have dinner and we put the little ones to sleep. In Remi's room, I ask her… "You invited Esther and Quadric?" She nods. "I think they should also know what is going on especially after what happened that night. I think I owe them that much, especially Quadric." "It's alright, shall we?" She nods and we return down stairs. I take my sit and she across from me facing everyone. "Thank you all for agreeing to meet me. I want to explain myself to everyone. I have no excuse for my attitude so first I will I am sorry. My name is Morenikeji Jasmine Akinwale. My parents are Mr.  Jeromy and Mrs. Joanna Akinwale. I am the only child .20 years ago, I was 6 years old, I was at home with special dad. I just finished sketching him and he sent me upstairs to pick his canvas, he was a very talented artist though he left as a hobby. While upstairs, I heard voices from the Livingroom followed by a gunshot. I hid under the bed, until the cops found me after momma returned. After special daddy died, mom lost the will to live. One day after losing everything, mom takes me to an orphanage promising to come back for me after she's back on her feet. That never happened. 6years later, I was adopted by father. The man that broke in that night. Had the sister known they wouldn't have allowed him adopt anyone."  She stands up.  "Excuse me, I need a drink, does anyone want one?" "Water will do?" I answer and everyone answers nodding. She leaves for the kitchen. She returns with bottles of water and a bottle of beer. "I drink when I am down. I also smoke at times." She says opening the bottle of beer. She takes a mouth full. "So Jasmine, what happened after you were adopted?" "Well, it turned out father is running a secret serial robbery and fraud organization and children and the foundation of it. We were fighters, killers, hackers, great swimmers and runners. I am a fighter and hacker. 4 years after, I was 16. I adored father so much and he adored me also, he claims I am one of his best disciples, but I never felt good hurting people. At this time, I had lost my faith in God. I felt he is the reason everything in my life is going wrong and meanwhile, father made us worship him and he alone." She pauses and takes another gulp. "Esther please get me another in the freezer." She nods. After Esther returns. "Things changed this year; I hacked my childhood home's cctv and found out that …" She starts to cry, sob actually. Mr. Bamise goes to her. "Jas it is alright. What did you find out?" "Father killed special dad." We all gasp. "I was heartbroken. I considered killing him or exposing the group Buti knew it will get me nowhere. I burnt down his office instead and escaped, you found me and the rest is history, you know."

CHAPTER 6

I complete my story and take another gulp of my beer to stop the flow of tears. "I am sorry I got you all involved in this mess. I left your place then because, father has trying to find me, so I have been moving from one place to another. I never stay in one place for too long. At least, until I got married. It has been great, don't get me wrong, but look what happened 2 months ago. Father found me and if not for your interventions I might have either died or forced to return to the gang. This my life." Everyone's head is bowed. "This is what you are running from." "Sorry what?" "We always knew you were running." "I guess. I miss my family. When I was in comma, I saw my dad and he told me it is either I return or go to hell. He told me when I do return, I should do this and find my momma. I called these meeting to pass the information and tell you that I will leave if that is what you all want." "Of course not." "Not?" Kay joins me. "Keji you are just a victim of circumstances. And remember; 2cor: 5:17. 'IF ANY MAN BE IN CHRIST, HE IS A NEW CREATURE.

OLD THINGS ARE PASSED AWAY, BEHOLD ALL THINGS HAVE BECOME NEW.'

I look into my husband's eyes and I see love and happiness radiating in it. "I love you Morenikeji and we are united. Remember it is for better for worse.  We are in this together." "What did \I do to deserve your love?" "I am the one that does not deserve yours, I am happy you allowed me into your life." I hug him crying. "So, what do you want to do now?" "I will file a report against father after which I am going to pay the orphanage a visit and try to find out if mom dropped any address, if not I will try online, a couple of hours will find her. I hope she wants me back." He hugs me tighter. "Alright," He releases me as everyone comes to hug me. Esther and Quadric stand up too.  "Aunt Keji, Esther says. "We aren't mad as a matter of fact we respect you more. We thank the almighty God for protecting you till this day." I smile at her. This is a new beginning for me. I need to find mom though. Life is good and God is filling me more happiness. I am making the best of my new life. Dad is also good and Remi soon starts school. I start a little business. Online business as a consultant for a forensic force. I work from home, and I am searching for my mom too. The orphanage was shut down 10years ago after the sister was killed and the children scattered. The building is under lock and key.

CHAPTER SEVEN

It is summer holiday. I and Kay with Remi, invites our extended family to celebrate with us. I and Dami goes to an Ice-cream stand to buy for the children and soft drinks for us adults. I am controlling my alcohol intake and they all helping. I remember the face of the ice-cream seller. Special dad always brings mom and I hear every summer during summer. As a matter of fact, we owned 2 horses and a beach house and a lot a sand castles. This is what I was telling Dami, when I sight a woman walking head bent, with a sad look on her face, picking pink, red and blue sea shells. I freeze completely in my tracks. "Keji? Are you ok?" "Please call Kay. I need him right now." "Stay put." She leaves and I start towards my mom. Halfway there, I hear Kay's voice. "Keji!!!" I stop looking back at him. "What's the matter? Are you hurt?" I notice everyone except the children came. "No, I am not hurt. Look see that woman, the one in the sunflower gown." "I see her. The one picking seashells." I nod. "That is my mom, Mrs Joanna Akinwale performing the Akinwale family summer ritual. The picking of red, pink and purple seashells, it is used to decorate my room in spring." "Wow, that's lovely and that means we found your mom." She nods. "What if she doesn't not want to have anything to do with me." "Don't that that way Jas, look there she is gathering decorations for your room." "Jasmine's room. Not Keji's." "I am sure it wouldn't matter. She just wants you back. No one will want to lose you. If you are up for it let's go give her back her daughter. If you were her and Remi you, would it have mattered?" My mother asks. "No, it wouldn't. You are right. Kayode mi please come with me." Everyone else hugs me wishing me God's guidance. Kay takes my hand and we start walkover to the beach house. What I found stops me in my tracks. A lot of children and teenagers, doing one thing or the other together. They turn as we arrive. "Hi guys", I say. "Hi." "Please I want to see Mrs Joanna Akinwale." "Arte you here for the memorial?" "What memorial?" "Oh, then you must be a newcomer. Once you enter the first room on your right is the place." I whisper to Kayode. "My playroom." He takes my hand encouragingly and we walk in together.

******************************************************************************************************************

We arrive in the playroom to find my mom arranging the sea shells she picked decorating in the room Just the way we used to back when I was a child. She notices she's not alone and turns. "Mrs Joanna?" Kay calls as my voice. "Yes? Good afternoon. Are you here for the programme?"  "I … No ma." "Ma do you recognize this young girl in this picture?" I ask bringing out my photograph, the one she left me in the bag she parked for me the day she took me to the orphanage." "This is my little girl, Jasmine. She is dead. Her memorial is what we are doing today. But please where did you get this photograph?" I start to cry hugging Kay not able to give an answer. Once Father adopts a child the child is dead to the world. He changes the person all together, my name is Starfire from the movie Teen titans. "Ma, my wife's name here's maiden name is Morenikeji Jasmine Akinwale." Her gaze snaps up. She takes my right hand, raising it. She's checking my birthmark. "Omma!!!!"  I call bursting into tears. She pulls me into a hug. Crying heavily. "Jasmine, Jasmine my darling. Sister told me you died. She said… My God. "I cry also. "I missed you so much. See, I did not destroy your playroom as a matter of fact I just picked your favorite summer seashells. Pink, red and blue." I step into my playroom. Memories of my childhood comes calling. "Kayode mi see this." He enters the room. " Red and golden roses." I nod. "Jasmine but how did you know I will be here." "Oh, I saw you picking the seashells earlier. Omma, will you like to meet my son and in-laws?" "You haven't even introduced me to your husband officially." I blush. "Omma, meet OluwaKayode Mokorede Ayobami and Kayode mi, meet my mom, Mrs Joanna Akinwale." He prostrates to greet her and Omma pulls him up. "Thank you for taking of her for me." "No ma, it is the other way around. She's the that deserves kudos for taking good care of I and our son." "Son, I have a grandchild?" "Yes." I say feeling the proud. "Can I meet him?" "Yes, he and our family are on the public side of the beach." "Then what are we waiting for? I want to meet all of them." I nod. The three of us leaves. She tells the group outside that she will be back.

CHAPTER EIGHT (8)

It has been 6 months since I saw Omma. WE are forming the broken bond but I have not been able to tell her everything I went through despite her several attempts to get me to tell her. One day, Omma sends for me with an address to meet up. I arrive at the address and sees the big name. It is a palace built on large field. It is filled with cheerful sounds. I step in and I see a group of children playing around. Happy, it different from the one I grew up in. I sight Omma and a group of teenagers singing a hymn. I sight a group of instruments at one corner. I pick a guitar and plays to their song. *WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER* After the songs, the whole place was silent bas I discover everyone as gathered. Then an applaud starts and before I know everyone is clapping. I go to my mom and hug her. "Gooday Omma." She hugs me back. Then takes my hand. "Everyone meets my daughter Jasmine Morenikeji Ayobami. The long lost supposed dead Jasmine." They clap. "Then alone says, "Welcome home sister." "Thanks. Omma and I start towards the building. "Where is this place?" "I t is a little something. It's an NGO. Like the one we wanted to start before your special dad died. It is out to help families in the situation we were in or families in dire need of help. We are out to help them financially and provide job opportunities with our sponsors. The children and teenagers are the kids from the street that O tried to home and give a better life after I thought I lost you. There are also volunteers among them that work here during the holiday or weekends." That is good. I think. "I invited you here, so I can introduce you to it. I know you have a job and a life outside, but…" "It is ok mom. I actually work from home so I am available. I will have started right now, but I will like to tell Kayode first. I don't think he will be against it, but I think he should know from the onset set." "Of course. I didn't expect an answer right away. Thank you, Jasmine." We hug. That night I tell Kayode and he agrees as I knew he will, he as a matter of fact dropped a donation of 5 million naira.

EPISODE 2

(NEW BEGINNING)

CHAPTER NINE (9)

It has 4 years since I found out about Wale social help. It is named after special dad. I worked full time in the Ngo. Dami also works as a volunteer. Today as I arrive in the office, Dami walks up to me. "Omma wants to see you. We have a new case and she wants us working on it. She wants to brief you herself." "Alright." We both head towards Oma's office. We arrive, knock and enter. She rises to welcome me into her embrace as she has always done since I was a little girl. I notice a man sitting down. "Jasmine please sit down. Meet Mr. Daniel Omokore, our new client. Mr. Daniel meet one of our ambassadors who is also my daughter. Because of the seriousness and urgency of the matter I will be leaving you to her able hands. Jasmine, I will leave you to it." "Yes Omma."  Mom leaves us as Ashe goes to handle other pressing matters in the hostel. We have a new girl and her pregnant teenage sister. "Please have your seat." "Mrs Jasmine?" "Please call me Keji. So, mom says you are going to brief us personally. Here with me is my partner, we will be working together on this case together. So, what can we do for you?" "My name is Daniels friends call me Dan. Actually, I am here on behalf of my friend. His name is Ore Oluwa Adegeshin. He was one of the workers that lost his job during the last relay of workers and ever since, he and his wife has been finding it hard."

Ayomide is in her flat, happy and awaiting her husband to break the Goodnews to. After 5 years of waiting, God has finally answered my prayers and blessed us with our own child. Though Ore Oluwa doesn't believe in God. I know it has something to do with his past. We were 12 years old when we were promised to each other. He was kidnapped when we were 15. He was rescued/ found when I was 20 years old and we continued my relationship. Though at that time he was really strange. A year into our marriage I genuinely gave my life to Christ but this has a constant bone of contention   between us. I miss the little Ore who invited us to church, the one that is always teaching psalms as children although all that time I was just a church goer. Now that boy is no more, he is replaced by an atheist who doesn't believe in God. I am praying to God constantly for his soul. I hear his car drive in and stand up adjusting my clothes. He comes in on a call. I start forward, but he raises a hand to stop me. "What were you thinking preaching to our Mus"I am sorry honestly. Please find a place in your heart to forgive me. I promise this will be the last time we will have this kind of conversation. Please one last chance." I nod, "I hope. I am beginning to regret my decision." He pulls me to him hugging me tight. At last, I drop my guard again. "I got the result from doc Ken earlier."   He looks down at my face, apprehension shining in it. "In 6 months', time we will be having an addition in this family. I know we agreed to…" He shuts me up with his lips. "I am the happiest man alive this minute. Oh, thank you so much." I smile all the worries and doubts finally leaving my body.

CHAPTER TEN (10)

Two weeks later, I am at home cleaning the room Ore and I agreed to be our child's room once he/ she is born. I hear Ore's car drive in. It is too early, what's going on. I go downstairs to join him. I find him slumped in the living room. I hurry to his side. "Ore!!!:" I call. His breathing is not even.  I immediately call 911. They instruct me to put him on his side and start CPR. 15mins later, an ambulance arrives. We are immediately transported to hospital. He is rolled into the emergency room. A man arrives and the aural around him disturbs my spirit. He is the doctor taking care of Ore. I begin to pray. Putting Ore under God's protection. He comes out, "I am sorry, we won't be able to treat him here. You have 24 hours to take him out of here." "Please doctor. Any amount you will need. Please treat my husband." "You are disturbing the peace of the clinic and for record he will not survive these so go and start preparing his burial." "Take that back. My husband will not die but live to declare the goodness of the lord in the land of the living." "He laughs in a devilish manner, leans closer and whisper for my hearing alone. "Does moonlight believe that?" "Who are you?" He laughs again in the same manner and leaves. I call my parents. They promise to join us the following the following day. I contact his parents too. I drive home after contacting a friend of his. "Daniel, do you know anyone that calls Ore moonlight?" His face loses all trace of color. "Why do you ask?" We are having this conversation as we drive over to our flat. "The doctor referred to him as that. What's wrong? Don't lie to me." "I can't tell you but we need to Get him out of there ASAP." I park the vehicle. I see our things outside a dour clothing's burning with my photographs. I kneel beside the pile. I stand up still surprised. I find our door locked. Daniel has started to park our things, important documents. The door is under lock and key.  On it is a red writing that says. "MOONLIGHT! YOU CAN'T RUN FROM YOUR SHADOW. I AM COMING."  I Withdraw immediately. Scared. "What's all this?" I ask Daniel. "Ore is in the best position to explain this to you. I am going to get help. If not for the fact that he is un conscious I will have said you should go take him out of there. But take in case of trouble press this. You will get help." "Anything will do me justice. What is this all about?" "Ore's kidnap as a child.  Call your parents and in-laws to stay put. We need to travel light. Get the police, follow your instincts you need it right now.  You are targeted by the deadliest cult in the country. They have connections, Ayo I need the criminologist in you to take over." I nod enter the car and drive out immediately. I won't call the cops; I need the divine host now. I begin to speak in tongues as I drive over to the hospital, as soon as I arrive, I lock the door to his room. Kneel and begin to pray.

We arrive at the clinic. I, Dami and Daniel. We enter the clinic and I start to feel scared. Like I do when I am at the DEATHCHAMBER. I know the only reason this will be happening is that one of the dangerous ones among us all or father is. He notices hesitance and catches my eyes. "Dami, please call Kay and do it in the car. This is beyond WASH. Remain in the car if I don't join you in an hour leave." "Keji what is going on?" "Just do as I say please." She leaves. Then turn halfway. "What should I tell Kay?" "We need an ambulance for an unconscious person. We are moving him, but wait for my prompting before coming in. This is about the intruder." Her face loses all trace of color. She nods and runs out. As soon as she's out of sight. I turn to Daniel.  "Spill!!! Who are you?" "What do you know?" "What has this…." I look around, take me to the ward right now." We hurry there. He sends a text and the door opens. The woman opens the door and we go in as she locks the door. The sight that meets me Suprises me. One of our most deadly assassins, the person who had helped me escape. "Moonlight?!!!" Our companies turn to me. "Who are you guys to him. "I was also a victim. We escaped together. You seem to be familiar with…" "The death chamber." I nod. "I was starfire." "The legendary disciple who is good at everything at a very young age. Well welcome sister. They are after his life. I am surprised they haven't come after me. You don't want to see what they have done to him." "Father himself had tried to kill me so I am not surprised. We need to leave this place right now. First, who's she?" "She is Ore's wife." "He didn't tell." "It's not something one just says." I nod turning to her. "I promise you he will tell you soon, I couldn't tell my husband without the holy spirit intervention." "You are a believer?" I smile and nod. "I promise you will be ok." I text Dami that we are coming out and she responds that Kayode came himself to help and they are waiting for us. "My husband and sister-in-law are outside waiting.  Let's move." We all leave the ward. Kayode is waiting for us at the entrance. I enter our car and we take Ore with us. I know what the matter is with him. Let's just get out of this place." "Dami says it has something to do with your past and the intruder in our home then." "Yes, they are after his life and I need to help him. He helped me escape the cult. It is time to repay the favor." "Of course. What is wrong with him?" "Poison it is sprayed into the air. Once it is inhaled the person falls into a deep sleep 2 hours after and in 72 hours if not treated person is going to die. According to his breathing and heartbeat it's been 5 hours. I have the antidote at home. It requires 4 doses." He touches my leg. "I love you Keji." "I love you too Kay."

CHAPTER ELEVEN (11)

We arrived back home. I went to my lab and get the first dose of the antidote. Ayomide, as Daniel calls her, helps with the water needed. Esther had gone to pick Remi from school. I mix it with the antidote the sprays it into his nostril. Moonlight sneezes and wake up. I stare at him. "You were stronger than getting poisoned by a spray. When last did you take the vaccine. I gave you my entire first vaccine." "I left it for other kids with a good heart, so they won't have to suffer what we did. You know how horrible it is there." I nod. "You need to relax; I just gave you the 1st dose." "I need to get to Ayomide. She's my wife, they will definitely go after her." "She's resting. Congratulations on your first child." He blushes and I hear Kay's baritone laughter behind me. Ore shrinks. "It's ok, it's my husband. Kay?" "I didn't believe when Keji told me men also blush, turns out she's right." "Isn't she always?" "You guys should stop before my head explodes." They both laugh. "Let me go prepare lunch before everyone is set. Moonlight you will meet son today." "Can't wait." I turn and return to the kitchen.

Kayode as a symbol of appreciation, sets Ore up. He also opens the back flat of our compound to them. Ayomide and I start to prepare the nursery for their baby. It was turning out ok. One day, Kay and Ore had left for work. Ayomide seemed really lost in thought, so I decide to ask her what the matter is. "Am sorry, I know you said it is painful, but I can't bear to be in the dark anymore. What /where is the death chamber?" She asks. "Ore is in the better position to tell you about it. He won't like me doing it for him. Am sorry." "Kayode knows right?" I nod. "Why then can't ore just tell me? We have known each other for long. As a matter of fact, before his kidnap, he was the one that made me start attending church so I can be with my best friend. After he was, I went there so I can make God happy so He can help find Ore. I promised that if he does, I will never miss another church service. Ore returned 4days after that prayer when I was 20." "Wow that is some testimony." She smiles. "I know, after he returned, he never went to church again and he won't talk about it. I was already wondering if my parents were right, that he isn't the little boy I used to adore so much." "Do not give up on him, that is the only reason I am here today, Kayode never gave up on me. He was praying for me everyday and feeding me with the word of God when he thinks I am asleep. With time, I am sure that Christ loving evangelist will return. You just need to Give God time to work on him." "Thank you so much you are like the sister I never had." "I can say the same about you." We continue with the decorations and arrangement of the nursery.

I snap awake as I feel a hand tap and says in special dad's voice. *Jasmine gets up. * Kayode is fast asleep so he isn't the one playing tricks on me. "Lord Jesus," I start knowing my heavenly father has an assignment for. "I am your daughter ready to do your bidding. Speak for I am listening." I feel a nodge in my spirit to pray for Ore and Ayomide. I begin to pray and then my tongue changed, around halfway, Kayode joins me and I realize I had woken him. After the prayers at 3 o clock am. We sit and start our bible studies. This is when a call comes into my phone. I pick the call, it is Ayomide. "Good morning, ay. It is quite early." "Yes, am sorry. It is Ore. Please I need your help." "We are on our way." We both change from our nighties and head towards their own apartment. She opens the door for us. "Where is he?" "The bathroom of our bedroom. He already broke the mirror. He awoke from a nightmare and ran in there. That was around 1 am. He became calm 30mins later, but he then began to cry and he has been doing so ever since." "Father!" I say angry that the man still had had such a hold on our lives. Until recently I also had nightmares. "Who?" Ayo asks but I am already on my way to their room. I enter the ensuite bathroom. Help him to the chair and squats before him. "Moonlight you need to come out of there. You need to stop giving him power over you and your nights." I say to him. "It's not easy. Starfire killed them. I can't look away. It is all my fault. I made them attempt to escape now they are all dead/." "It is all in your head. That is what he wants you to believe. Look Jesus is calling you back. He is offering you a second chance. Remember, He that dwelleth in the secret place of the highest. The mighty warrior, the oromo ni se faya ti, there is a reason he sent little Ore Oluwa there. It is to become his light in the dark lives of those hopeless children. Remember he won't tempt us beyond what we can bear." "+He allowed Father ruin so many lives. He left us all in the bondage there. Why should we allow him back into our lives." "Because he is preparing his army against father. He sent us there so we can help our brothers and sisters. We can put our skills together and help rescue the others. But God won't allow us go, he won't give the go ahead until we are ready." "How Keji?" "By saying prayers of rededication. Surrendering everything to he who knows it all. To the captain and commander of our army, Jesus Christ." "I am ready." "Then say after me." After praying. "Thanks, I feel better. I feel a joy I haven't felt since the day before I was kidnapped, spent it baking with Ayomide at her mom's bakery." I smile and rub his headlike I do Remi when I am proud of him. "I am not your son." I laugh. U take his hand and we both goes downstairs to join our spouses. Ayo is very happy when she finds out that Ore has finally rededicated his life to God.5 months latter, they welcome their baby daughter, Mosunmola Adegesin.  We are all happy our children grow together in the love of God and his wisdom.

CHAPTER Twelve (12)

It has been 12 years since I and Ore met again. 10 years ago, Kayode and I bought a new place so we left our former place to Ore and Ayomide's family. Ore and I are now on a mission to recruit children off the street before Father finds them. Remi is now 16 years old and in ss2 while Mosun is in jss3. They are still very good friends. Our getting children off the street is giving WASH problems. Mom is about giving up on them when I ask for one last chance. The holy spirit told me it is time. My mission as to why I had to become a street child is here. It is time my story helps others become better people. Esther got married 2 years ago but still works as compound. our house keeper despite our effort to set her, up. One day, as I return from WASH, I find Remi at the basketball court in our compound. I walk up to him and touch his shoulders. "Hey mom." He greets me in his usual manner. "Good afternoon ma." "Afternoon, what are you thinking about that keeps you so occupied. Is there a tournament I forgot?" "No mom it isn't that. You remember Bella, right?" "Yes, I do. One of your first friends in school and she's also one of our relay volunteers in WASH. What about her?" "Her parents just adopted a daughter. They are the same age; her name is Kate. At least that is what they call her. We have been friends since ss1 when she joined our school, but mom she is never happy. She is running." "From what?" "I don't know. She is free with outsiders but the moment she feels one is getting too close, she immediately puts the gap between them. Bella told me she has attempted to leave their house numerous times. Mom I am worried about her. I really hope she won't hurt herself." "She reminds me of myself." I think to myself. "Mom what do you think we can do to convince her that she's safe?" "Invite her over to WASH next week Saturday. Everyone should be present, that is advisable." "What is happening that day." "I will be telling a story of a street girl. A girl who God's love and mercy rescued." "Do you know her personally or it is just a story." "I do know her personally. If I tell you who it is you might spoil it for the others. You know the troubles we are having with the beloveds at W.A.S, H?"  He nods. "That is the last trial mom is ready to put up to try to help them, she says if it doesn't work, she will give them some money and allow them do as they please." "How about Tony mom?" "I am sorry but mom's mind seems to be made up." He bows his head. "Do not be sad let's just hope this last resolve will help." "Amen mom. I have practice Sammy and 2 other members are going to be here." "Alright you guys should your thing after practice invite them in for lunch." "Yes mom." I leave for the house. Esther is already halfway into preparing the jollof rice that is on our Tuesday lunch roaster.

The said finally arrives. I, Remi, Kayode and Ore's family leave for WASH together. Remi says that Kate had promised to come so everything is going on well. Mom is still worried if this will work. She can't bear the thought of anyone of them living on the street again. We are in mom's office together. Ore said he had something to tell us before the programme. "Since your family moved out one the apartments have been open. I was thinking of starting a vocational school there for the children. You said some of them don't want to go to school. I think we can get professionals to train them in whatever they choose even those in school so as for them to be self-dependable, I think that will encourage them." "That is a great idea. It never crossed my mind. What are you going to need to implement this plan." I ask. "Your consent, it is your property anyway." "It is yours now for one Ore and even if it isn't nothing in this world will make me say no."  A knock sounds on the door. Remi's head pops in. "May I come in?" "Yes baby." "He bends and whispers in my ear. "They are here and grandma says 5 minutes more." I nod at him. "I am to go backstage now." We all leave the office together. Kay sees me backstage gives me a quick kiss and leaves. I say a silent prayer to God and take a deep breath as I walk on stage.

                                                       CHAPTER THIRTEEN (13)

I am welcomed on stage. "Good evening, everyone. My name is Jasmine Morenikeji Ayobami. I am the daughter of the founder of this NGO. I am here to answer questions you might want to ask before I begin the story we are here to tell. So, let's have the questions." "Are you going to get over with it, you are wasting your time though, my own mind is made up." I see my mom's eyes flash with burning anger at the way I was spoken to. "Let me tell you a story. It is the story you all will know a little of as long as you once lived on the street. I am sure you know about a girl called, Starfire." "What do you know about her? We heard she just disappeared." "Well, she is the one standing before you right now." A gasp erupts among them. "I don't believe you. She was under.," "Poison. He was found dead after she disappeared." I say and there is total silence. "He tried to kill me. Poison is not just a street lord but I can't possibly begin to explain, it is not something you should know about." "How come?" "Good question. Mrs Murrumba Akinwale is my biological mother as you all know, but my life wasn't a bed of roses. My dad and mom were the best parents any one will like to have. They never allowed to lack anything neither did they spoil me. We were happy. One day some guys assassinated my dad. Out of concern for me, mom takes me to an orphanage till she gets settled. Six years after, I was adopted with other 12years olds in the orphanage. We were all happy because it is very rare to be adopted at that age and when you are already a teenager. We were all taken to a place. W e were trained to be fighters, assassins, runners and hackers." "The only problem is that it was a cult. We were using these skills to hurt people. We killed, defrauded and hurt people. I later discovered that he is the assassin that killed my dad, so I burnt down his office and escaped. This is how I ended up on the streets and became the Starfire." I see curious looks. "Now do you have questions before I continue?" Hands begins to fly into the air including Remi's. This brings a laugh out of me. "Ok, let's have it. Send it to my compad. My number 07023899701."  The first question arrives. "Ma, how come all you speak about now is Jesus and not been ruthless." "Ok I will come back to this." "Ma what is the name of the gang that destroyed your life?" "For your own good, it is better I do not tell. They are still out there." "Now back to the first question, well I was taken off the street by a new family, they sent me school gave me a new life and trained me to be a netter person. I ran." They laugh. "After years of freedom I didn't like the idea of been controlled one of other reasons I know you understand what I mean. I remained in school though. My late dad wanted me to go to school and study to the highest level except I get tired of studying. Well after my first degree, actually during my first degree I met my husband and immediately after our education we got married and gave birth to Remi here." One day, Father came to our hose, the same day Kayode found my adoptees. If not for their prayers I will be a dead woman by now. I saw heaven and hell. It was real. I never told anyone this, I died when Remi was 4 years old. I saw my dad; he showed me hell and heaven then told me to return and find my mom and also ask for help." I see tears in their gazes and shock in Kayode's. "I am offering this same thing I found among everyone to you. Jesus saved me, asking for helped with the pain as Jesus was healing me. Education that brought me to my husband." "If you want to give your life to Jesus, please come forth as my dad and mentor leads in prayer." Kids and teenagers begin to file out. Including a girl who Remi stands up takes her hand and leads her to the alter. My life was full of ups and downs but I am glad it can help these kids. After the prayer. "I have a surprise for you. My best friend here, who was also an ex-victim of the group has gathered a few of our brothers who has also managed to escape, with me. We are ready to train whoever is interested in martial art, computer coding and athleticism. In no time you will be professionals like all those guys on the street." They all jump up happy. I see you are all interested you can see in my office later. Also, you will be learning vocations so you can be independent. So, what do you say?" They cheer. "Alright that brings us to the end of the programme. "Wait for your souvenirs God bless you, let us be on our feet as my husband leads us in the closing prayer."

After my speech, I return to my office. I am really tempted to take a bottle of beer and down Adegeshin decide a shot won't hurt and Kay will never know. Meanwhile I know an encounter is coming with him, soon enough. As I open the bottle, he pulls it off my hand. "Don't even think about it." He speaks. "You are angry". "Well shouldn't I be.  I all of a sudden find out my wife died and she couldn't tell me about it." "Can I have my drink back?" "No, here this is a cup of coffee instead incase you need something strong." I laugh and pecks his check. "Is that a promise for later?" "Why not let's wait to find out?" He begins to pull me close, when the door to my office sounds. He groans in disapproval and I laugh. "Come in." The door opens and Remi and a group of people comes in. "Baby?" "Mom, dad meet Mr. And Mrs. Paul Brandon. This is Bella and Kate." "Good evening. I am Morenikeji Jasmine Ayobami. You can call me Jasmine or Keji. This is my husband Kayode and you have met baby." "Good evening. Nice to meet you all and thanks for your help. Kate seems much better than she has ever been since we adopted her. Thank you very much." "We thank God alone. So, Kate, how does it feel to fin ally let go of everything?" "Like a load has been lifted off my head. You are such a strong woman. I envy you." "Do not bother envying your role model, try hard to be better than him or her." "I will be sure to remember that. Thank you, ma." "Keji, please is there anything we can also do to as volunteers or it is only for teenagers?" "No, the teenagers are also an included part. It is actually a Ngo made to help me people who are in dire need of help. That is our main goal." "So, there is place for me?" " There is a place for everyone, we are all one big family. Welcome home." We were all happy and I am grateful to God.

                                                                   CHAPTER FOURTEEN (14)

One day, I am in the office when Remi calls. "Baby?" "Good afternoon mom. How is your day going?" "Great thanks. Are you back at home?" "No mom. We are closed, but Kate wants to pay you a visit and is worried that you might not appreciate that." "You should tell I don't mind. You know that." "Yes, I do. But she insists that I call you first. Should we come to the NGO?" "No, I am done for the day. Let us meet up at home." "Ok mom. Bye." I drop the call, clear my desk and leaves the NGO. I arrive earlier than the kids. I prepare beancake and guarri lunch. 20 mins later, they also arrive. I meet them in the Livingroom. "Baby." "Mom good afternoon." "How are you? Bella and you?" "Fine ma." "Kate, I heard you wanted to see me." "Yes ma, I just want to thank you for everything. I also want to thank you for been you." "It is alright. Follow me, lunch is ready." We all leave for the dinning.

A year later, I had gone out to visit Kayode at his work place and he is again refusing to see me. Father-in-law too is mad at me. I have tried everything to apologize but it isn't working. On my way back to WASH, I notice that a car is trailing me. When I speed, it does, when I slow down it does also. I look closely and notice the death chamber's symbol on the cars bumper. I freak out. I receive a call from Ore. "Starfire. Are you ok? Are they following you too?" "Yes. What do we do?" "Don't stop. I am on my way. Call Kayode though." "He hasn't answered my call. Will you call him instead. I will try to lose them and join you all." Before the ca answer, I drop the call. I have been driving for 2 hours when Kayode's call enters my phone. I ignore it. I can't lose focus now.  Remi too starts to call my second phone. 10 mins later I reach a road block. I attempt to turn back, but I am surrounded. I decide to wait in the locked car, that is until I see them holding my mom. I get down. "Let her go." I shout at the person holding her. Her moves her so I can see his face. When I do, I lose my courage. The man behind the mask, Father. "Father leaves my family out of this." "Family? As far as I know this is just your mom." "What do you want?" "You know want I want. You either return to the group or you die. You most especially." He shoots my mom and she crumbles to the floor. "Omma!!!!" I scream and runs forward not thinking. He hits in my chest and I fall in pain. I have totally forgotten about my weak point. I have a weak heart and he knows. He laughs. "I might not get the others back, but what I did to you today will put my fear in their hearts. I will make you an example." He picks me up as though carrying a child and throws me over. As I fall, I sight Ore standing dumbfounded and tears fall from my eyes. Tears for all I will be leaving behind, for my mother who was just killed in my presence. I feel myself drawing then lose consciousness.

Ore calls in a few friends and we are able to track Keji's phone. We arrive at the location, the first thing we see is her car parked open. I get down with Ore and we see my mother-in-law sitting there on the floor staring into the water below. We also notice that she is bleeding from her shoulder. We hurry to her trying to help her, but she keeps pushing us away. Wailing. I look around scared hoping my wife is ok. "He killed her. That bastard killed my daughter and threw her into the sea." My gaze snaps up. I hurry to the railing. I stare looking for any sign of her. Few of the others begin to drive away. "Take aunt home Kayode. We will try our best to find Jasmine." "I am coming with you." "No, you are not. You will be useful at home than here, you will just be a burden here, meanwhile aunt needs medical attention, if we don't take care of her, Jasmine will be mad. You are the doctor do your job while we do ours." I nod. Take one last look at the sea, willing her to be ok. I take her mom by the hand helping her into my car and driving out of the premises. I take her home. I successfully extract they bullet. While dressing the wound Remi and Bella with Kate comes home. "Dad what is wrong with grandma?" I hear terror in his voice and where is mom?" I turn to face them. They were attacked Remi. Ore and their friends are looking for your mom, grandma was shot." "Shot then why is she at home and not in the hospital." "You won't understand. This is beyond anyone of us. Bella calls your parents till this is over, I will like us to stay together in one place." "I will do just that uncle Kay." Bella leaves for the other Livingroom. "Dad where is mummy?" "I do not know Remi. Let me be." "I will let you be, but I am going to find my mother." "Come back here Remi." Kate follows him outside. I sit by my mom in law. She is asleep but she keeps murmuring Keji's name. Ayo and Mosun, The Bamise's and the Paul's arrive and we all leave for WASH. Around mid-night Ore returns. Without her. Remi gets angrier he hisses and ask, "Are you saying you didn't find her?" He asks. Ore shakes his head. I sit heavily. "This is all your fault." Someone says. "She needs rest and she was getting it. Didn't she say you are a doctor, should you not understand what she is going through? Do you want her dead?" "What are you talking about?" "Don't feign innocence with me." "Ore what is wrong with Jasmine's heart?" Her mom asks. "When we first met, an incident happened and ever since, once she stresses herself or someone hits her chest, she feels a pain even I can't describe myself. How do you know about it?" "The captor hit her in the chest and she collapsed screaming in pain. I have never heard that sound from her, even when she was always having nightmares about her father's death. I saw my little girl in pain not woman she had become. After which he throws her down with an in humane strength." Keji has a heart problem I don't know about? This is really terrible.

All through the night, I couldn't sleep neither could Remi nor Ore. I was able to convince Remi that I am sorry. Her mom didn't want to sleep either, but the pain killers I gave her made her sleep. At about 3 am, we see a news. A woman was found in a speed boat. She is badly hurt. A picture is shown and it is Keji. "Remi?!!!" I call out to our son. In 5 mins, he, I Kiki and Ore leave the house to go to the address of the hospital where she was taken to. Arriving there, I was taken to her ward. Her head is bandaged and she needs the help of machines to breath. AS a doctor I know it is because of her heart condition. I feel terrible for the way I treated these past few weeks. I know she was acting strange and sluggish and it really pissed me off. I never knew it is because of health, especially after I discovered she's been taken pills which is the reason we never had another child after Remi. I was hurt. Staring at her now, I am really sorry. "I wish you had told me about your health issues. Keji, I wish you had totally opened up to me. I am sorry though." At this point tears are already pouring from my eyes. "I acted out of proportion. I am sorry. Please come back." No response. I slump on the chair. This isn't happening to me. I am about to lose my wife for the second time. I feel a hand on my back, looking up I see Remi. It is morning the sun has finally risen. "Coffee?" He asks and I shake my head. "I don't think I can stomach anything right now." He stares at his mom. "She looks so frail dad. Like a little girl." "I know right? She is always shut off when it comes to these. She never told me how bad it was." We stare at her in companionable silence.

That afternoon, I reluctantly leave her side. Remi and others need me too. We arrive back at WASH. Ore walks up to me. The cops invaded the death chamber. We were able to rescue everyone and we shot Father in the belly and he fell down the mountain into the forest. If the fall does not kill him the wound will and if it doesn't the habitats will. It is over. Her sacrifice was worth it, everyone came to face their fear and fight." "Goodnews but she isn't waking up. It is just her brainwaves that allows us know that is alive. Apart from that she isn't here." "This is all my fault. I should have stayed away from you guys. He will have still thought she was dead." "No do not say that. I am glad you are one of us. You are my brother, if not for you I won't have met Keji. So, it is ok." That night I take her mom to see her. "She will be right? Nothing will happen to her?" "By the grace of God ma."

                                                            CHAPTER FIFTEEN (15)

It has been 2 weeks since the incident and it is Remi's birthday. It is 18th of December. The day that brought about joy to our home. Keji was planning a big surprise for our son's sweet sixteen. Now she's on the hospital bed, barely aware of what is going on around her. We are spending it together; Remi insists that is what he wants and my dad pulled some strings and it was granted. Around 4, Bella and Remi's best friend, Tony arrives with a cake. "Happy birthday dude." Tony goes to the bed. He takes her hand. "Good afternoon aunt Keji. Hope you are hanging in there. We are all worried about you. It is Remi's birthday so we are here to celebrate, but it isn't the same without you nor in a clinic. Please wake up. We all love you." He pecks the hand he is holding. "Thanks bro." Remi says. "So, it is time. Let us cut the cake." "I told you I am not celebrating till mom awakes and looks at me." "I just thought…" She says sounding confused. "I am sorry. I thought aunt Keji will want us to make sure you are ok. Happy birthday, I am sorry." "Keep it, I am disappointed. Please use the door." She looks down. I feel terrible looking at him. Tony also leaves. It is obvious Remi doesn't want anyone around. "Remi that was rude." "She is the reason I was rude to her. She is my closest friend. She knows I don't want to celebrate my birthday this year. It is just this year." "It is an important year. Like she said also your mom won't want you to act like this. Call her up a d apology. Like dad always say it is when you are down that you need your friends the most." "I am sorry. I don't know. I can't just seem to be happy seeing mom like this." "I understand, son." He takes one more look at his mom. "I will call her up in the car. Thinking of it I am hungry. How about you?" I nod and my son leaves. I stare at her and sighs. This is the most difficult time in life.

It is Christmas eve. I had gone to WASH to help her mom with the Christmas decorations. While there, a call arrives in my phone. "Doctor Kay?" "Good afternoon doctor Ken. Merry Christmas." "Good afternoon it's something wrong?" "There is no need worry sir, it is good tidings I bring you. Jasmine is waking up. She has started breathing on her own. All things been equal she should be awake by new year." "This is great news indeed thank you very much doctor Ken I will be there in 20 mins." "Alright doctor kay, congratulations." "Thank you doctor Ken. Congratulations to us all." "Dad what's going on?" "Your mom is waking up. That was doc Ken. He she should be awake by new year." "That is great news dad. Let me go and inform Bella, Kate and Tony." I rub his head and he leave to search for his friends.

It is 11:30 pm December 24. I and Remi are spending our Christmas with her as a family. Her breathing on her own has increased a lot. It is then we notice people outside the hospital singing carol songs. We both go to the veranda of the room. It is the whole of WASH and BELOVED, led by Tony and Kate. Tony, Kate, Bella, Mosun all come into the hospital. They were given permission to come in. As we all start to sing. I hear a broken sound from her a sound I can't mistake. My wife is back. I look towards her she has taken off the oxygen mask.

I wake up to the songs of Christmas. At first, I thought I was still dreaming. Then I open my eyes and see everyone. I started to believe it is real and then I see mom. My eyes open wide. She didn't die. "Omma!!!!" I call and everyone looks towards me I quickly take the oxygen masks off so I can get a good look at her. "You are alive mom. You didn't die." She pulls me to herself hugging me. A nurse comes in to check my vitals. I have totally recovered miraculously. Kayode and Remi are very happy. "This is the best Christmas gift ever." Tony says happily and Remi and the others cheer agreeing with him. We hug. Later that night after everyone left Kayode and I get talking, I know it is high time I tell him the whole thing. "Remember I told you that six years after we were adopted." He nods. "I actually confronted him, it turned into a fight. I think I was having an upper hand, or maybe not. I don't really understand what happened, he hit me in my chest and ever since my health hasn't been the same. I can't fight for too long I will feel a heart ranching pain in my heart and I will pass out. After papa and mama adopted me, I was told my heart can't bear stress anymore, nor a fight. So, I had to stop. I later discovered that if I try for another child, it might claim my life. I told the doctor to keep it from you. I know you love children; he said O might recover and have other children. I was counting on that. I am sorry." "Yes, I know, I am too. It's ok. If we want another child we can adopt. Keji?" "Yes?" "We need to ask you a question though. Who is Father? Who is behind that mask?" "I do not know. I have never seen him without his masks. Was he found?" "He is assumed to be dead. Actually, he is dead, He was shot and he fell down the cliff, into a jungle. Either way he is dead." "This is good. I can relax and try to help those young ones find their families." "I know and I am here to help." We fall asleep that night and I was discharged two weeks later and we all start a new life the identity of father taken to the grave with him.
