The churning, violent waters of the Grand Line finally began to calm, though the atmosphere on the Going Merry remained entirely electric. The massive, barnacle-encrusted debris of the sunken galleon bobbed lazily in their wake, a silent, rotting testament to the impossible.
Up on the bow, Luffy was practically vibrating. His rubbery fingers gripped the wooden sheep figurehead so tightly his knuckles were white, his dark eyes locked onto the fluffy, sprawling clouds above. He wasn't looking at the sky like a sailor checking the weather; he was looking at it like a conqueror eyeing his next great frontier.
Down on the grassy deck, the reality of the situation was settling heavily over the rest of the crew. Nami stood near the mainmast, carefully holding the pristine, yellowed map they had salvaged from the resin-sealed chest. The bold, ornate letters spelling out SKYPIEA seemed to mock her vast navigational knowledge. She tapped the glass sphere of the Log Pose strapped to her wrist. The needle remained stubbornly locked in a vertical position, pointing straight up.
"It's not broken," Nami murmured, her brow furrowed in deep concentration. "The magnetic pull is undeniably coming from the sky. But ships don't just fly. There has to be a physical mechanism. A knock-up stream, a localized gravity anomaly, something."
Kai leaned back against the wooden railing, the salty ocean breeze ruffling his messy black hair. He took a slow, deep breath, letting the steady rhythm of the waves calm his racing heart. The sheer adrenaline of seeing a ship plummet from the heavens was fading, replaced by the familiar, comforting hum of the Power Watch strapped to his right wrist.
"Bot," Kai thought silently, syncing his intent with the device. "Any ideas on how we defy gravity today?"
"I am a highly advanced Chronos-kinetic regulator, Kai, not a magical elevator," Bot's voice buzzed softly in his ear piece, dripping with digital sarcasm. "Though, if you want me to calculate the terminal velocity of a wooden caravel falling from ten thousand meters, I'd be happy to ruin your day."
"I'll pass," Kai smirked, shaking his head.
"If we want to figure out how to ride a ship into the clouds, we need information," Sanji said, walking out of the galley and handing Nami a hot cup of tangerine tea. "And we need to restock. The Alabasta trip emptied our pantry, and I refuse to let Nami-san or Robin-chan go hungry."
Nami took a sip of the tea, her eyes narrowing as she looked toward the dark, jagged landmass looming on the eastern horizon.
"That's our best bet," Nami announced, her tone shifting into absolute, professional command. "That island is Jaya. Specifically, the port town on its western coast, Mock Town. But I need everyone to listen to me very carefully right now."
The crew gathered around, noting the sudden tension in their navigator's voice.
"Mock Town is a notorious pirate haven," Nami warned, crossing her arms. "There is no Marine base. There is no law. It is a town built by criminals, for criminals. It is crawling with high-bounty pirates who would love nothing more than to cause trouble."
Zoro cracked his neck, a slow, bloodthirsty grin spreading across his face. "A town full of lawless pirates? Sounds like a great place to stretch my legs."
"No!" Nami shrieked, instantly hitting the swordsman over the head. "That is exactly what we are not going to do! We are going in, gathering intel on Skypiea, and getting out. No fights. No drawing attention to ourselves." She spun around, pointing a threatening finger at the captain. "Luffy! Promise me you won't start a war!"
"I promise, I promise!" Luffy laughed, completely distracted by the distant scent of cooking meat drifting over the water.
" Can l go with you?'l can play chaperone." Kai volunteered, pushing himself off the railing. He adjusted his simple clothes, ensuring his Power Watch was securely fastened.
Nami sighed, her shoulders dropping in relief. "Thank you, Kai. Also try to keep these two idiots on a tight leash."
The moment the Going Merry docked at the splintered, wooden piers of Mock Town, the oppressive, violent atmosphere of the settlement washed over them like a physical wave.
It wasn't like the grand, historical cities of Alabasta. Mock Town was a sprawling, muddy shantytown built from repurposed ship timber and rusted iron. The air was thick with the suffocating scent of cheap rum, stale sweat, and freshly burnt gunpowder. Open brawls spilled out of the saloons and into the muddy streets, while heavily armed, scarred men laughed and gambled on wooden porches, entirely unbothered by the concept of order.
Zoro walked with his hand resting casually on the hilts of his three swords, his single visible eye scanning the alleys. Luffy marched happily through the mud, entirely oblivious to the heavy, murderous glares being directed at them by the local thugs.
Kai walked a step behind, his hands tucked deep into his pockets. His dark eyes darted from rooftop to alleyway. The vibrant, chaotic energy of the town was making his watch pulse faintly.
"Hostile density is statistically terrifying," Bot warned quietly. "I'm reading at least a dozen individuals with combat parameters that exceed standard Marine captains. Keep your head down, Kai."
"Way ahead of you, Bot," Kai muttered, his black hair casting a slight shadow over his eyes as he kept his gaze lowered.
They pushed their way through the swinging wooden doors of the largest, rowdiest tavern in the center of town. The noise inside was deafening. Pirates were cheering, slamming massive wooden tankards against the tables, and throwing throwing knives at torn wanted posters pinned to the walls.
Luffy, completely ignoring the tension in the room, marched straight up to the wooden bar and hopped onto a stool. Zoro sat next to him, while Kai stood just behind them, his posture relaxed but his muscles coiled like a spring.
"Excuse me, bartender!" Luffy yelled cheerfully over the din. "We're looking for a way to get to the Sky Island! Do you know who we can ask?"
The effect was instantaneous.
The piano player fumbled and stopped mid-keystroke. The cheering died in the throats of the pirates. The clinking of glasses ceased. Dozens of hardened, bloodthirsty men turned their heads slowly, their eyes locking onto the teenager in the straw hat.
For a long, agonizing, suffocating moment, the entire tavern was dead silent.
Then, the room erupted. It wasn't an explosion of violence, but an explosion of deafening, mocking, tear-inducing laughter. Pirates pounded their fists on the tables, howling at the ceiling as if Luffy had just told the greatest joke in the history of the Grand Line.
"A Sky Island?! Are you completely out of your mind, kid?!"
A loud, deeply arrogant voice boomed over the laughter, originating from a large, circular table in the center of the room. The crowd immediately parted, revealing a tall, heavily muscular man with blonde hair and a cruel, jagged smile. He wore a pink, sleeveless shirt and moved with a swagger that demanded absolute submission.
This was Bellamy the Hyena, a pirate who prided himself on vicious realism.
"The Era of Dreams is over!" Bellamy sneered, walking slowly toward the bar, his boots thudding heavily against the floorboards. "Cities of gold? Emeralds hidden in the deep? Islands floating in the sky? The One Piece? It's all pathetic, childish fairy tales meant to comfort weaklings who don't have the guts to face reality!"
Bellamy stopped right behind Luffy. He leaned in close, his voice dripping with absolute venom. "The real pirates of this new era care about treasure, strength, and power you can actually hold in your hands. Dreamers like you make me sick."
Without a single fraction of a second's warning, Bellamy raised his massive hand, grabbed the back of Luffy's head, and slammed his face violently into the thick wooden bar counter.
The heavy oak splintered with a sickening CRACK.
"Luffy!" Nami shrieked from the doorway, her hands flying to her mouth.
Zoro's hand instantly clamped down on the hilt of the Wado Ichimonji, drawing the blade a single inch from its scabbard. His eye flashed with pure, lethal intent.
Kai didn't hesitate. The ambient moisture in the tavern began to pull toward him. The orange face of his Power Watch began to pulse rapidly with a bright, brilliant brown light.
"Hostile engaged!" Bot yelled, the robotic voice losing all its sarcasm. "Kai, his kinetic energy is spiking! He has a Devil Fruit ability! Initiating —"
"Stop."
The word was quiet, muffled slightly against the broken wood of the bar, but it carried a weight that completely froze the room.
Luffy slowly pulled his face out of the splintered wood. Blood dripped from his forehead, running down the bridge of his nose and staining his teeth. He didn't look angry. He didn't look scared. He simply turned his head and looked at Bellamy with hollow, completely unbothered, dead eyes.
"Zoro. Kai," Luffy ordered, his voice low, firm, and absolute. "No matter what happens in this room, do not fight back. This is not a fight worth winning."
Zoro froze. His knuckles were white on his sword hilt. He stared at his bleeding captain for a long, agonizing second. Then, slowly, with a heavy clack, Zoro pushed his sword back into its sheath. He dropped his hands to his sides, sitting perfectly still.
Kai felt his heart hammering against his ribs. The brown light on his wrist flared, begging to be unleash. He wanted to blast Bellamy through the wall. But he looked at Luffy's eyes. This wasn't a request; it was a captain's absolute command.
Kai gritted his teeth so hard his jaw ached. He forced his hands deep into his pockets.
Kai bowed his head, letting his black hair fall over his eyes, entirely masking his burning fury.
For the next ten minutes, the tavern turned into a theater of cruelty. Bellamy and his crew subjected Luffy and Zoro to a brutal, humiliating, one-sided beating. They smashed heavy rum bottles over their heads, kicked them repeatedly in the ribs, and poured drinks over their bloodied clothes. Through it all, neither Luffy nor Zoro threw a single punch. They didn't even raise their arms to block.
Kai stood like a statue in front of Nami, using his own body as a silent shield to protect her from the flying glass and debris, taking several heavy, glancing blows from thrown chairs to his own back. He didn't make a sound.
Finally, bored with the lack of resistance, Bellamy grabbed Luffy by the collar of his red vest and hurled him through the tavern's front window. Zoro was thrown out right after him. They crashed heavily into the muddy, rain-soaked street outside.
"Pathetic!" Bellamy laughed, stepping out onto the porch and spitting into the mud near Luffy's boots. "You aren't even worth killing! Get out of my town, you dream-chasing cowards!"
Nami dropped to her knees in the mud, tears of sheer frustration, anger, and humiliation streaming down her face. She grabbed Luffy's blood-soaked vest, trying to pull him up. Kai walked out of the tavern, his hands still in his pockets, his black hair plastered to his forehead by the light drizzle. He knelt beside Zoro, helping the heavy swordsman sit up.
"Why didn't you fight back?!" Nami yelled, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "You could have easily beaten them! You took down a Warlord of the Sea! Why did you just let them humiliate you like that?!"
Luffy sat up slowly in the mud. He wiped a streak of blood from his lip, picking his straw hat out of a puddle and placing it firmly back on his head.
"Because they didn't know what they were talking about, Nami," Luffy said simply, his voice carrying no anger, only a quiet, profound certainty. "A fight like that... there's no point to it. Our fists are meant for protecting our dreams, not for proving ourselves to people who don't even have them."
Kai stared at his captain in absolute awe. Back in Alabasta, Luffy had been a force of pure, unrelenting, explosive fury when fighting for Vivi's country. But here, bleeding in the mud of a lawless town, Kai realized that Luffy's true strength wasn't just in his rubber punches. It was in his unyielding, untouchable, unbreakable spirit.
"A man's dream... WILL NEVER DIE!"
The booming, incredibly loud, gravelly voice echoed from the side of the muddy street, cutting through the murmurs of the watching crowd.
Sitting on the wooden porch of a closed storefront, entirely unfazed by the violence that had just occurred, was a massive man. He had a thick, unkempt black beard, was missing several teeth, and was currently shoving a handful of cherry pies into his mouth. He had been sitting in the corner of the tavern earlier and had watched the entire spectacle unfold.
"Let them laugh, kid!" the large man shouted, a terrifying, intense, almost demonic fire burning in his dark eyes. He pointed a massive, pie-stained finger directly at Luffy. "That was your victory back there! When you aim for the very top, you sometimes come across fights that just aren't worth fighting! You hold onto that Sky Island!"
Luffy stopped wiping the mud from his face. He stared at the strange, massive man for a long time. He didn't say a word, but a silent, mutual understanding seemed to pass between them. It was a fleeting, heavy encounter between two men who believed in the impossible, though their paths would eventually lead them to vastly different destinies.
"Come on," Zoro grunted, spitting a mouthful of bloody mud onto the street. He leaned heavily on Kai's shoulder as he stood up. "Let's find someone who actually knows something about this island. These guys are a waste of breath."
