Chapter 41 - Chapter 40: The Crucible of Merit

The midsummer night had deepened, casting long, flickering torch-shadows across the newly renovated eastern annex of Nagoya Castle.

This section of the keep, restructured under Subaru Ryu's civic blueprints, served as the logistical heart of the province—a place where paper, coin, and steel were processed long before they ever reached the battlefield.

Subaru sat alone at a heavy cedar table, his eyes adjusting to the soft glow of his blue system interface.

His 91 INT was running a predictive compliance matrix on the two highly volatile profiles he had just processed with Nobunaga and Kichō.

[TACTICAL REQUISITION MODE: ACTIVE]

SUBJECT A: MAEDA KEIJIRO (Status: Volatile / Unaligned Vanguard)

SUBJECT B: KINOSHITA TOKICHIRŌ (Status: Low-Tier Clerk / Latent Genius)

CURRENT TASK: Psychological Alignment & Private Summoning

The door slid open with an erratic, heavier-than-usual thud.

Stepping into the room was a man who looked less like a samurai and more like a mythological storm god trapped in a human frame.

Maeda Keijirō—the wild card of the Maeda clan—stood over six feet tall, his long hair tied carelessly with silk cord, wearing a flamboyant, mismatched haori jacket over raw leather armor.

Directly behind him, practically scurrying to keep up, was Kinoshita Tokichirō.

The future Hideyoshi looked remarkably small in comparison, his features sharp and hyper-expressive, his calloused hands nervously smoothing down his faded hemp tunic.

"So, you're the outlander advisor who counts the grains of rice in our bowls," Keiji rumbled, his 98 ATK aura radiating a raw, physical pressure that made the lanterns flicker.

He bypassed the formal sitting cushion entirely, dropping his massive frame directly onto the wooden floorboards and leaning against a support pillar.

"Toshiie said you were a sorcerer.

I think you're just a bureaucrat with very clean boots."

"Keiji-dono!

Please, control your tongue!" Tokichirō hissed, bowing so low his forehead nearly touched Subaru's desk.

"Lord Subaru, please forgive his insolence!

He has had too much unwatered sake at the lower market stalls!"

Subaru did not flinch.

His 53 DEF and his long exposure to Nobunaga's terrifying presence allowed him to remain perfectly composed.

He calmly closed his interface and offered a simple, level gaze to both men.

"Sit down, Tokichirō," Subaru said softly, gesturing to the cushions.

"And Keiji, if my boots are clean, it is only because the roads I built have finally cleared the mud from your path to Nagoya."

Keiji blinked, then let out a sharp, booming laugh that rattled the inkwells.

"Ha!

A bureaucrat with a spine.

I like that."

Tokichirō sat down carefully on the very edge of the cushion, his sharp eyes—the physical manifestation of his 95 INT—scanning Subaru's desk, tracking the logistical maps and the official seal of the Oda clan.

"Lord Subaru," Tokichirō began, his voice dropping to a serious, raspy whisper.

"The appointment...

the clerks at the eastern gate told me I have been granted custody of the timber supply lines between Kiyosu and Nagoya.

A peasant like me...

a man who was carrying sandals last week.

Is this a joke played by the elder retainers to see me fail?"

"Lord Nobunaga does not play jokes with his timber, Tokichirō," Subaru replied, leaning forward, his voice shifting into a warm, deeply earnest tone.

"The elder retainers look at your birth and see dirt.

Lord Nobunaga looks at your three-day wall reconstruction at Kiyosu and sees a man who can build a kingdom out of nothing."

Tokichirō's breath hitched in his throat.

His 94 POL allowed him to instantly understand the immense, dangerous weight of the opportunity being handed to him.

"What kind of man is he, truly?" Tokichirō asked, his eyes burning with an intense, latent hunger.

"The streets call him the 'Fool.'

The traditional samurai say he is a madman who violates the heavens.

But since I entered his service, I have seen the grain flow, and I have seen the matchlocks.

I want to know who it is I am truly bowing to."

Subaru looked between the two of them.

Keiji had stopped playing with his hair, his sharp eyes locked onto Subaru, listening intently.

"He is a man who is tearing down the old world because the old world is already dead," Subaru explained clearly, using language that resonated with both the pragmatist and the rebel.

"In Kyoto, the Shogun is a puppet.

In the east, Imagawa Yoshimoto treats men like numbers on a tax ledger.

Nobunaga is different.

He does not care if your grandfather was a minister or a ditch-digger.

He cares only if your blade is sharp and your mind is clear."

Subaru pointed toward the map of Owari on the wall.

"The traditional lords want to preserve their petty boundaries.

Nobunaga looks at the entire country and sees a unified realm.

He is cruel to those who cling to the past, but to those who look toward the future, he is the only lord worth dying for.

He is a demon to the old world, Tokichirō, but he is the architect of the new one."

Tokichirō's hands trembled against his knees.

The vision Subaru described wasn't just a political alliance; it was an absolute validation of his entire existence.

"A lord who looks at the future...

not the bloodline," he whispered, a tear of profound realization welling in his eye.

Keiji snorted, though his posture had turned considerably more disciplined.

"A fine speech, Advisor.

But a hawk doesn't fly with crows.

Why should a free man like me bind his spear to a master who demands absolute obedience?"

"He doesn't want your obedience, Keiji," Subaru countered, his eyes locking onto the giant warrior.

"He wants your fire.

The Maeda clan wants to cage you because your strength frightens them.

Nobunaga won't cage you.

He will point you at forty thousand Imagawa spears and tell you to break them.

He doesn't want a loyal dog; he wants a tiger that knows where to bite."

Keiji stared at Subaru for a long, silent moment.

The smirk left his face, replaced by the dangerous, terrifying seriousness of a peerless vanguard attacker.

"A tiger, you say."

Subaru stood up from his desk, his indigo robes rustling as he walked toward the heavy oak doors at the back of the annex.

He turned back to the two men, his system confirming their psychological states.

[INFLUENCE ENGAGEMENT: SUCCESSFUL]

KINOSHITA TOKICHIRŌ : ALIGNMENT DEEPENED (Loyalty Potential: 95%)

MAEDA KEIJIRO : CURIOSITY TRIGGERED (Hostility: 0%)

ACTION : Initiate Private Audience

"Words on paper are nothing compared to the iron itself," Subaru said, drawing a small, golden coin-token from his sleeve—the personal sigil Kichō had given him.

"Lord Nobunaga and Lady Kichō are waiting in the private upper study.

There are no elder retainers there.

No Hayashi Hidesada to sneer at your clothes, and no Maeda elders to lecture you on etiquette.

Just the lord, the lady, and the future."

He opened the door, revealing the hidden stairwell leading to the highest keep of Nagoya Castle.

"Come with me," Subaru invited smoothly.

"Meet the man you are going to serve.

Look into his eyes, and see if his fire is hot enough for your steel."

Tokichirō stood up instantly, his small frame radiating a sudden, unshakeable resolve.

He didn't look like a sandal-bearer anymore; he looked like a man who had just seen the path to his destiny.

"Lead the way, Lord Subaru."

Keiji rose slowly, stretching his massive arms until his joints popped like matchlock fire.

He gripped his heavy iron pipe, tossing it lightly into the air before catching it with a grin.

"A private meeting with the 'Fool' himself?

Well...

it's certainly better than drinking sour sake in the dirt.

Let's go see if this dragon actually has teeth."

As the three men began their ascent into the moonlit heights of the castle, Subaru Ryu checked his ledger one final time.

The traditional lineages of Owari were fading into insignificance.

The madman and the monkey were moving toward the throne, and the modern era was about to lock its final gears into place.
