Chapter 26 - 26 LOCATION - FIRE AND WOOD

|Location: Wasteland, battle|

-OMNISCIENCE-

The battlefield lay in ruin, a chaotic testament to the ferocity of the clash. Fiery ashes from Anna's relentless assault smoldered in scattered patches across the scorched earth. Around them, thick, gnarled roots twisted and coiled like serpents—Dia's conjured defenses, alive and imposing, clawing through the debris and ash. The air was thick with the acrid scent of smoke and earth, every breath heavy with tension and anticipation.

In the distance, Nuk, Joshua, and Anna struggled to put as much space as possible between themselves and the violent core of the battle. Their hurried, uneven footsteps disturbed the dry leaves and cracked soil beneath them as they fled, desperate to avoid being caught in the crossfire between Dia and Zero. Each of them glanced back with worry and urgency, knowing the fight unfolding ahead was beyond their current capacity to intervene.

Zero stood a short distance away, his pale skin streaked only with smudges of dirt, tattered cloth clinging to his lean frame. Unlike the battle-worn warriors around him, he bore no visible scars or wounds—only the faintest hints of exhaustion shadowing his usually unreadable expression. He barely knew the others; his understanding of emotions was limited, almost mechanical. Yet, beneath this veil of detachment, something was quietly shifting—a subtle stirring that hinted at a new, unfamiliar sensation born from the chaos surrounding him.

"SAI, I'm teleporting now. Once I'm above that plant lady, coordinate immediately. Timing is everything," Zero said quietly, his voice firm but calm, a slight, almost manic grin curling his lips. The plan felt risky, but necessity sharpened his focus. Dia's monstrous form loomed ahead—her huge, imposing body leaking golden blood, crowned with jagged antlers, legs entwined with living roots that writhed and pulsed. Her mind, it seemed, held the power to command the plants themselves, making her a terrifying force of nature. Zero knew brute strength alone wouldn't stop her; he had to strike smart, fast, and before she found a way to strike him down.

Inside his mind, thoughts clicked and turned with mechanical precision. A strategy was forming—a lifeline amid the chaos—to wrest control from the spiraling battlefield and impose order on the storm. This plan was his beacon, the only way forward.

[Affirmative, initiating assisted coordinate during reconstruction.]

Zero fixed his gaze on Dia as she advanced, the massive roots around her twisting like living serpents in anticipation. The distance closed swiftly. Without hesitation, Zero vanished and reappeared directly above her. The sudden shift left Dia momentarily frozen, her sharp eyes wide with disbelief.

Zero's laughter broke the tense silence. It was wild, erratic—a sound born from adrenaline and a mind teetering on the edge of unhinged. Beneath the laughter, a flicker of fear lurked, hidden even from himself. Dia felt the strange sensation of space folding and warping around her as Zero's body disintegrated and reassembled, a display of raw power that defied understanding.

"What!?" Dia gasped, voice trembling as confusion flickered across her monstrous features. Her huge antlers quivered, and the golden blood dripping from her cracked lips seemed to slow. "How... how is this possible?" Her mind scrambled to make sense of the sudden appearance above her. The roots around her legs twitched nervously, betraying a rare moment of vulnerability. Fear seeped beneath her fierce exterior—a cold, creeping dread that whispered of losing control, of the battle turning against her.

"Shock, are you? Now eat this!" Zero shouted, swinging his fist with intent to engulf it in flames. But no fire blazed—only bare skin met Dia's gaze as his fist swung forward.

"Huh…?" Zero blinked, his hand stubbornly cold and unlit.

Confusion rippled through him, an unfamiliar panic rising with the realization: the fiery power he expected to show didn't manifest.

His breath hitched as he steadied himself for the attack, but doubt gnawed at his mind. "What? Why isn't it working?" His voice cracked, revealing the first real uncertainty he had shown.

Despite his pale skin bearing only smudges of dirt and his tattered clothes hanging loosely, his body trembled slightly from the shock of failure.

Dia seized the moment without hesitation. With a powerful, fluid motion, roots erupted violently from the earth beneath Zero, twisting and curling like living chains. The pressure slammed into him, pinning his limbs with an unyielding grip. Zero's muscles tensed instinctively, every fiber screaming in protest as he struggled to break free, but the roots only tightened. A sharp, unfamiliar pain stabbed through his chest and throat—a taste of blood filled his mouth as he coughed, the rawness of the sensation unfamiliar and frightening. This new pain was different, more intense, more real.

Dia sneered, voice ragged but triumphant. "That caught me off guard... but what the hell was that?" Her breath came in harsh pants, frustration mingling with a deep, underlying fear that she fought hard not to show. Despite her aggressive front, the relentless battle was chipping away at her resolve.

Struggling against the crushing grip, Zero's frustration flared. "SAI, what happened? I thought I could use the abilities recorded in you—I mean the system." His voice was strained, laced with urgency, pleading for understanding.

[Please refer to manual section 30, verse one: Due to insufficient computing power, transfiguration of brain frequencies requires a minimum of 131 seconds.]

"What? Why didn't you tell me that earlier?!" Zero barked, summoning every ounce of strength to push the roots away and dash clear. Each movement sent fresh waves of ache through his worn body, but he forced himself onward.

[Host was notified of insufficient computational unit.]

"No... I was not!" Zero argued back to the system and stared, dumbfounded. "And now you're recording conversation all of a sudden? I don't remember agreeing to that."

[Host, the Systematic Artificial Intelligence, is greatly dumbfounded. Please refer to the user agreement manual for any questions.]

"Hey, come on—"

"You! What are you whispering about?" Dia's sharp voice cut through the awkward exchange as she launched a series of rapid attacks. Vicious roots whipped toward Zero's legs and torso, trying to ensnare him once again.

"Looks like I'm not the only one with voices in their head," Dia spat, eyes blazing with raw emotion—fear, anger, and desperation all tangled together.

Zero dodged a sweeping root, smirking despite the danger. "Admitting to being schizophrenic now? That 'him' must be your imaginary friend."

"Shut up—he's real!" Dia shouted back, her breath uneven, muscles trembling as her monstrous form convulsed with effort. She lashed out again, roots slashing in a wide arc toward Zero's side, but he twisted away just in time, countering with a sharp strike that grazed her bark-like skin.

"Yeah, yeah, weirdos," Zero sneered, eyes narrowed with grim determination.

"Shut up!" The tension crackled like electricity between them, the air thick with their biting words and the violence of their battle.

The fight escalated. Dia's form swelled larger, roots thrashing violently as she launched a relentless barrage of attacks—long, whip-like vines, spikes bursting from the earth, and sweeping stomps that shook the ground. Zero met each strike with nimble dodges and precise counters, weaving through the assault with practiced agility. Bruises blossomed across his pale skin, cuts wept dark blood, and every breath drew deeper pain from his aching limbs.

Then, with brutal force, Dia slammed Zero to the ground again. Her roots coiled tighter, wrapping around him like iron bands, draining his energy with merciless efficiency. The pain was sharp and searing, crawling deep into his bones and rattling his resolve.

"SAI! I'm in a pinch here, help me," Zero gritted through clenched teeth, sweat mixing with grime on his face.

[Negative. Without physical form, the system cannot directly intervene.]

"Ah, screw it. How long until I can use that girl's fire ability?"

[3... 2... 1... Began manifestation: simultaneously producing combustible gas and ignition frequency for activation.]

Flames roared to life around Zero's hands, a sudden surge of heat and bright light licking the roots that bound him. The fire crackled hungrily, but Dia just laughed—a dark, amused sound that rippled with confidence and mockery.

"Dumb freak. I was surprised when your hands burst into flames, but I'm highly resistant. This isn't enough to burn me." Her eyes gleamed with cruel amusement as she watched the flames flicker harmlessly against her armored roots.

Zero's eyes burned with determination. "You said it yourself—you're resistant, not immune. If this isn't enough, I'll just make it hotter, also you should look into a mirror you might see the real freak"

Energy surged fiercely through Zero's body, flames growing hotter and brighter, the heat intensifying. The roots began to crack and smolder, black ash falling away in chunks. Every nerve in Zero's body thrummed with fiery energy—the fire was now his lifeline and changing it now might be detrimental and the only opening Dia would need to strike a killing blow, the only weapon standing between him and defeat.

"This is impossible! How can you handle so much Sertium!?" Dia screeched, pain flashing in her eyes as her massive form trembled under the assault. The strain etched itself into every muscle and root, revealing cracks beneath her terrifying exterior.

Zero manages to escape the grip and immediately strikes back against Dia's monstrous body.

"Sertium? Who knows! But you should cannibalize on this!" Zero shouted, hurling a blazing chunk of burning wood at her. The fire spread rapidly, shrinking and scorching her roots with ferocious intensity.

"Ah! Die!" Dia screamed, but her grip on Zero did not waver. With cruel mockery, she lifted him close, her breath hot against his face. "You stop struggling. I can't kill you if you keep on moving"

But with numerous roots and vines at her disposal she quickly caught Zero again. She pulled him up to her face and mockingly sneered at him.

"That's the whole point of moving, you freak!" Zero shot back, breath ragged, sweat mingling with the dirt on his battered skin.

Dia's grin widened, roots tightening their unyielding embrace. "Looks like you still have energy to spare." She began siphoning his boundless reserves, pulling fiercely, pain radiating deep inside Zero, threatening to shatter his focus.

Zero screamed, the pressure mounting unbearably. Instinct took over—his hand burst into flame again, morphing into a spearhead of blazing fire. With a fierce cry, he drove it into Dia's exposed eye.

"Since you like stealing my energy so much, I'll give it to you through your insides. Choke on this, freak!"

Flames surged through Dia's eye socket, burning deep into the core of her massive head. Her howl of agony echoed across the battlefield as the fiery spearhead seared through her defenses from within. Her golden blood hissed and bubbled where the fire consumed her from the inside out, and her monstrous body convulsed violently, shaking the earth beneath them.

And then her body blew-up, as fiery blaze erupted from her.

Then for a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. The fierce emotions, the raw pain, and the desperate will to survive intertwined in a volatile dance of fire and fury. The surrounding trees were scorched and splintered, their twisted trunks blackened and broken. Flames licked hungrily at the dry underbrush, and the land bore the scars of destruction—charred earth, crushed roots, and shattered stones marking the relentless toll of their battle.

And from a distance Anna's group witnessed the explosion, some were startled, the others were curious, then some were left awed, and someone was entertained.
