Chapter 248 - Chapter 248 - The Serpent that Defies the Dragon.

[Chapter Size: 2700 Words.]

Third Person POV.

King's Landing.

...

...

Oberyn quickly entered the city while passing through one of the entrances near the sea and the sewage outflow canals.

There was a gap among the breaks that almost no one knew about. It had cracked over time, about five years ago, and Oberyn had paid very well to the man who showed him the hidden place beneath the vegetation.

Besides paying the person who showed it to him, he had removed him from the city and taken him to Dorne, ensuring that he would never reveal that entrance to anyone. It had never been something he needed to use beyond a few tests... Until this night.

With the place hidden among the bushes, and in addition the decaying smell of the area, so close to one of the sewage outlets, it made anyone keep their distance from there.

He quickly passed through the breach in the wall and was already inside the city. He jumped between one ditch and another and moved away from that corner, which led into one of the worst alleys of Flea Bottom.

He simply adjusted his hood and moved forward. He had shaken off all the scouts outside the walls, circling several kilometers around the area of King's Landing, avoiding anyone who tried to locate him.

He left his horse hidden and had come secretly through one of the blind spots of the walls.

And now, inside King's Landing, he found the city quite agitated, but still functioning. It didn't take long before he started hearing conversations.

"The Blackfyre army is arriving with its army, outside the walls!"

That irritated Oberyn.

'That bastard certainly knows how to advertise himself while trying to destroy the reputation of his enemies', Oberyn thought calmly as he moved forward.

First, he needed information. And he would be able to deal with that in the city.

He continued down one of the streets, following the flow of people, seeming to live normally as the atmosphere of King's Landing usually was, despite the tension and whispers about a massive army arriving.

There were northern guards watching the streets. Oberyn kept his hood lowered and kept walking. He was not the first to walk through those streets that way.

He continued until he found a tavern. He entered silently. The place was lively, full of drunkards. He sat directly at the counter. This place was one of the best to get certain information...

"Give me the best drink you have there." Oberyn said this, and the man looked at him suspiciously. He certainly remembered another man who had done the same almost two years ago.

Anyway, he came with his most expensive beer and placed it in a mug in front of Oberyn.

Daemon had entered that same tavern to get information when he arrived in King's Landing for the first time. That night ended up starting a series of events since he began visiting the Red Keep, where he began discovering the secrets and the power of all the members of the council while Robert was still king.

"How is the city, my tavern keeper?" Oberyn asked with a mocking smile.

The man looked at him and saw a coin being slid toward him. "The new Targaryen has taken over the entire city, if you want to know."

"I said I know, but really the entire city? There is no rebellion?", Oberyn insisted. He wanted to know if there was any resistance against Daemon.

"There was at the beginning," the tavern keeper admitted. "People were saying he is a demon incarnate. They say he transforms into the dragon itself, besides a wolf. No one can harm him. They also say they saw him jumping from his dragon in the sky above the Red Keep, and using those magics to not die from the fall. He took the entire Red Keep alone and tortured the Old Lion hanging in the middle of the throne room with magic..."

"Because of that, the High Sparrow was preparing to create a force against him. But suddenly, the man appeared dead. Dead after a fall down the stairs in his own house, surrounded by men of the new Faith Militant."

"So he has already eliminated his enemies...", Oberyn mocked.

"Yes. There was a resistance a few days later, an armed conflict between the soldiers and the new Faith Militant, with all kinds of weapons. But it was a massacre. The Faith Militant did not even have a chance. Anyway, the city is completely under his control. People felt more fear before, but he is feeding the people and letting everyone live their lives. He is handling King's Landing better than the Lannisters. That has been gaining everyone's favor."

"I see...", said Oberyn in a venomous tone. "Tell me, I heard that he executed Tywin Lannister in front of everyone. Could you tell me?"

'It was you who should have avenged Elia, Rhaenys and Aegon... But the one who killed Ser Gregor Clegane, Ser Amory Lorch, Lord Tywin... was the bastard...' He felt frustrated... All these years waiting for his revenge and everything slipped through his hand... Thanks to that man who appeared 2 years ago...

"You must have arrived today. The gates are already closed, with a Blackfyre army arriving," the tavern keeper said.

It was possible to see the irritation on Oberyn's face and the tavern keeper noticed it.

"Do not be irritated, lad. That is how we know him in the city. I do not believe that story that somehow the boy Aegon — who was shown before King Robert Baratheon and the old lion with his head crushed — survived. You cannot blame people for doubting."

Oberyn remained silent after that, still somewhat irritated. That weakened their cause greatly. Indeed, saying that both Tywin and Robert saw the baby and did not notice anything wrong, visibly being a Targaryen, raised doubts.

"The king explained to us who this Blackfyre is. He said that even though Barristan Selmu killed Maelys Blackfyre, he could not eliminate all the Blackfyres... Maelys Blackfyre had a daughter, who lived hidden and gave birth to 2 sons. He said that Varys himself is one of the sons of that woman... Which left us shocked...."

"Varys became a eunuch and had no way to claim the throne, but his sister was given to Illyrio, a magistrate of Pentos, where she had Aegon Blackfyre as a son. That is where this Blackfyre came from," he said.

"I do not want to know about the Blackfyre. I want to know about the execution of Tywin Lannister," Oberyn snapped before the man continued talking more and more.

"Well... he set up a platform in front of the Sept of Baelor and executed the former king Joffrey, who we thought was dead, but whom he had hidden and was about to be secretly sent to the Wall by his own family, since the boy had caused a series of problems and the city hated him, just like all the Seven Kingdoms."

"Anyway, he executed Joffrey and his mother. Then he executed the Old Lion, mainly reciting a vengeance over Rhaenys and Aegon, who were the half-siblings of the new king."

Oberyn remembered his revenge once again, and the frustration came once more involuntarily... He drank his cheap beer until he finished the cup quickly, before slamming it hard against the wooden counter.

'Him using the death of Elia's children to promote himself', Oberyn thought, hating Daemon even more.

How he hated that man.

"Do you know about the members of House Martell that he brought?", he asked.

"If I know?", the man seemed to mock. "Everyone in King's Landing saw the two princes of Dorne and the heir of House Tyrell being taken in chains to the castle, then to the Black Cells."

"Black Cells...", Oberyn thought. His goal was to rescue his brother and his nephew.

"Can you tell me anything else about the Targaryen?", Oberyn asked next. He wanted to know more. "I heard he is full of abilities."

"Well, if you want to know, then you are looking in the wrong place for that. In fact, you will not find that answer anywhere. No one knows how he does those sorceries," the man replied. "If you were the only one asking about it, I would even find it suspicious, but half of King's Landing wants to know how to deal with him, even if it is some hired assassin. You have no idea how many assassins have sat in the same place as you in the last few days..."

The man looked at Oberyn with a shrewd gaze. Oberyn simply responded by placing another gold dragon on top of the counter.

The man took it and nodded. It was obvious that Oberyn's questions made more sense than mere curiosity. He himself had admitted that he had just arrived in the city. In other words, he was probably a hired assassin in the eyes of the tavern keeper — and he was not the first. There had been several, and he had already served some, but they all simply gave up on the job after hearing more about the man.

"Listen, I do not know how much gold they offered you, and it is clear that you work against this Blackfyre... but if I were you, I would run as fast as possible from King's Landing. That man is not human. Nothing can harm him. He already caused enormous chaos in the city during the death of King Robert and played with all the nobles and soldiers. He creates whatever terror he wants. You cannot kill him," the tavern keeper replied as a warning.

He had no ties to the king, so he did not mind serving assassins or suspicious people, but he also warned them that all of that would only lead to death.

"I still want to hear more about him," Oberyn insisted.

The tavern keeper just waited a moment and then called, "Hey, Rat! Come here."

A man who had been sitting and drinking looked over and opened a smile missing a few teeth before quickly approaching the place where Oberyn was.

"This is Rat. He can give you some information about the Targaryen you want. He has already gathered some information about him."

With that, Oberyn turned to the man. "I want to know what you know about him," he said.

"Well, if you can help me, I was with him in Winterfell and here when the king died after being ambushed in the kingswood during his hunt..." said the man called Rat.

Oberyn immediately understood. He took a gold coin and placed it on the table.

Rat grabbed it immediately and bit it with some of his remaining teeth, satisfied that it was real gold. He waited a moment and then began to chuckle, almost like a rat.

Oberyn understood where that nickname came from.

"Well, let me tell you. When I served as a member of the Lannister guard in Winterfell through Petyr Baelish, I was there when the man appeared as a bard called Dovahkiin. Never forget that name, because from that night the chaos would begin," he paused.

Oberyn nodded. He had heard some things, but he did not know the details. "Tell me everything you know."

"Alright. I will speak first about how a bard caught everyone's attention with his music. He ignored the king's orders and then started a fight in the middle of the hall. Lord Stark went mad..." He continued, giving some details about that feast. "Later I heard that the next day the bard appeared and Prince Joffrey challenged him to a sword fight, while openly mocking everyone without any respect for the king."

"There was the fight. They fought and the prince was wounded by him..."

"They wanted to condemn him, and he asked for a trial by combat. You had to see it. A knight I do not know from where stepped forward to serve the king, and that man simply took a sword, without even putting on any kind of armor. He just waited for the other to be ready."

"When everything was prepared to begin, the king gave the order to start the combat. The man simply spun the sword and threw it to the other side, striking the knight's heart as it pierced through the armor with ease! I have never seen anything like it! The trial by combat ended in just a few seconds from the start."

"Everyone thought that was dishonorable, but he did not even care and simply left."

"Then there was chaos. The murders of the Lannister guards, the assault on Lord Stark... He declared himself to be Jon Snow and disappeared. The rest I think you already know."

"I know that he appeared in Pentos," Oberyn said seriously. "But over such a great distance in the span of a single day... no one could explain why. Later we discovered it was because he already had a dragon."

"Exactly. He went to get the dragon princess. He killed Illyrio and then Khal Drogo of the Dothraki. Since then no one heard any more news about him until he appeared in King's Landing alone."

"You do not need to explain all that confusion to me. We already know everything about that part. Is there anything else I need to know?"

"Well... did you know that rumors came from the North saying that he executed hundreds of people who worked in one of the castles he conquered with the wildlings? I am not talking about armed men, but servants and soldiers who served there!" he repeated. "They say they betrayed their lady and let her starve after the orders of the bastard Bolton. He killed them all. Executed them personally, without sleeping, for an entire day and night."

Oberyn frowned. He certainly did not have that information. "Hmm... what a good samaritan on his part," the Prince of Dorne mocked.

"I want to know now about everything you saw and heard about him, his powers and abilities."

The man began to think. With him receiving another coin, his mind seemed to work better. He began to speak about what he had seen and heard about the man.

"High proficiency in combat. Dragon rider. Can spit fire and ice. He also releases a force capable of breaking any gate and throwing men as if they were dolls. He can also use something that can move whatever he wants... making things and people fly as he wishes. He can also control animals, according to rumors, and may have eyes everywhere."

Oberyn became a little worried about that part, but now he was already there. He only needed to avoid animals, right?

Thus, he left the tavern without anyone noticing, but not before asking a few more questions.

He entered the alleys and moved through the city, avoiding guards. When he headed toward the Red Keep, he went to one of the secret entrances he also knew. Varys had already dealt with some important information about the passages. He also had an idea of how to enter.

Then he slipped into the darkness of the fortress's secret corridors without anyone noticing...

He needed to know where the Black Cells were and also find a way to approach Daemon to kill him.

What Oberyn did not know, while he walked through the dark corridors illuminated only by a faint light, was that someone was walking behind him without the Dornishman noticing. His eyes shone in the darkness, and a smile spread across his face. He simply used a sound-concealment spell while his eyes glowed, allowing him to see through the darkness.

'I did not know that a prince of Dorne was so eager to join his brother.' Daemon mocked as he followed the prince.

Oberyn had no idea of the danger that had been behind him the entire time since he entered the capital. Daemon had already been watching him. Especially because he already had some ravens observing the communication between the Blackfyre and his advisors, listening to every one of their strategies.

It was easy to follow Oberyn without being noticed. It was also easy to track him inside the city and see him coming toward the Fortress. He himself had left the path clear for him on purpose.

And now it was just him and the Dornishman.
