Ragnar burst out of the burning ruins of Vingulmark like a wrathful spirit, his horse pounding across the moonlit fields. Signy had not gone far. The young king's desperate flight had only carried him a short distance before Ragnar emerged from the smoke and flames. That was Signy's greatest mistake — allowing Ragnar Lothbrok to get this close.
"Signy!" Ragnar roared, his voice cutting through the night like a blade. "You cannot outrun what you've started!" Ragnar didn't feel a particular way about his father but one thing he earned was his respect.
Signy glanced back, his face pale with terror as he whipped his horse harder. The animal was already foaming at the mouth, pushed to its limit. Behind Ragnar, a smaller group of his most loyal warriors rode hard, their numbers thinned by the devastating explosion outside the walls.
The explosion was meant to kill Ragnar, he had overestimated Ragnar's rage since he left both Jan and Kjell alive.
