Golden Festival Day 54
The bell above the cafe door rang softly.
Iris looked up from behind the counter and immediately smiled: "Hairene."
Hairene stood in the doorway, hands in her jacket pockets, posture relaxed. No sway. No bottle. No chaos.
Hairene: "I'm here for that coffee."
Iris nodded quickly, already moving: "Yeah. I've got you."
Hairene walked in slowly, her eyes scanning the cafe. The usual noise greeted her, voices overlapping, laughter breaking through, chairs shifting slightly across the floor.
Hairene: "Sure is busy here."
Kagura: "We could always use the extra hands."
Hairene: "I'll pass, this isn't my style."
Diego, Marlon, Chifuyu, Esmarie, and Caesar were all locked into a ridiculous line, hands on each other's shoulders, swaying side to side like they were part of some poorly coordinated parade.
Diego: "LEFT—RIGHT—LEFT—RIGHT—"
Hairene: "Should I even ask what's going on there?"
Esmarie: "WE'RE PRACTICING FOR THE TRIP!"
Hairene: "…Is there ever a dull moment here?"
Chifuyu: "Not at Odd Jobs."
Hairene let out a small breath through her nose. Not quite a laugh. But close.
Iris gave Hairene her drink. Steam rose gently from the surface, the aroma rich but clean, balanced in a way that didn't overwhelm.
Hairene picked it up and took a sip: "…This is good."
Iris: "I'm glad."
Hairene took another sip, slower this time. Then glanced toward the front of the cafe: "There's a sign outside. Says you'll be closed for a week."
Chifuyu: "Yeah. We're heading to Hanabi Island."
Hairene: "Hanabi Island? The island that's basically a festival year-round."
Ariel: "That's the one."
Esmarie: "We got tickets!"
Diego: "Not just tickets."
Caesar: "VIP-level tickets."
Kagura: "WE'RE BASICALLY ROYALTY."
Yuji: "They're regular tickets. Well, actually… tickets for a VIP island, so I guess it's the same."
Iris: "You should come with us."
Hairene blinked: "Seriously?"
Chifuyu: "We've still got open spots. The invite covers up to fifty people."
Hairene looked between them.
The chaos.
The noise.
The warmth.
Then down at her coffee.
She thought for a moment.
Hairene: "…I could use a vacation."
Iris smiled.
Kagura: "The more the merrier."
Diego: "WELCOME TO THE TEAM."
Marlon: "This trip needs to come already, I'm hype."
Esmarie: "This is going to be so fun!"
Yuji: "More chaos."
Beatrice: "It suits us."
The door opened again.
Ina stepped in with some Hunter Agency Staff. They were carrying several long, wrapped cases.
Ina: "Your new blades are here."
Chifuyu: "Ohh."
Ariel: "They're finally ready."
Yuji: "Ho. Let's take a look."
Nicholas: "I didn't know we were getting new blades."
Ina: "Go ahead. Take a look."
No one needed to be told twice. They gathered around, opening the cases one by one. These weren't ordinary blades. These had been forged from the remains of the dragon Ariel had slain during the Augustus Mansion Raid. They held no special abilities. But that was fine, they might as well be unbreakable.
Chifuyu lifted his: "…This is insane."
Yuji held his in one hand, smiling: "This is a good blade."
Marlon swung his lightly: "Oh yeah."
They all admired the blades, even the cafe customers.
Esmarie: "You didn't get a new one, Shinatsu?"
Shinatsu: "No, I already have… a special one."
Ariel stood smiling, her fingers brushing along the blade's edge: "It came out nicely."
***
The night before the trip turned into exactly what it shouldn't have been, chaos. Clothes were scattered across the floor, half-packed suitcases sat open like they had given up, and the room buzzed with overlapping voices as everyone scrambled to get ready at the same time. No one had a plan.
Kagura held up two completely different shoes, squinting at them like they might magically match if she stared long enough: "These match, right?"
Yuji: "No."
Esmarie sat on top of her suitcase, bouncing as she tried to force it shut. The zipper refused to cooperate no matter how much determination she put into it: "WHY WON'T IT ZIP?!"
Diego: "Too much drip."
Esmarie: "But I packed light!"
Marlon walked past them calmly, already finished packing: "Maybe pack lighter."
Esmarie: "I CAN'T."
Shinatsu started going through her bag: "You packed twelve outfits for a seven-day trip."
Esmarie: "A lady needs options."
Chifuyu stood in front of his open bag, staring into it like it held the answers to something much deeper. After a few seconds, he scratched the back of his head: "…Why did I open this again?"
Ariel: "So you can pack clothes for the trip!"
Chifuyu: "Oh yeah."
Beatrice folded her clothes with quiet precision, her suitcase already perfectly arranged. Meanwhile Iris was having an early life crisis over what to pack.
The door opened, and Jeremiah stepped in. He stopped immediately, taking in the disaster in front of him. For a moment, he didn't say anything.
Jeremiah: "…You guys are packing now?"
Beatrice: "I told them to get ready earlier."
Jeremiah rubbed his temple: "The flight is in the morning."
Diego: "Pressure builds diamonds."
Jeremiah: "…That's not how packing works." He looked around one more time, then shook his head with a small smile: "Unbelievable."
Despite everything, they managed to finish. It wasn't clean, it wasn't efficient, but every bag was zipped and ready by the time they finally called it a night.
Golden Festival Day 55
Morning came faster than anyone wanted. It wasn't a proper wake-up, it was more like they collectively decided to start moving while still half asleep. Bags were grabbed, shoes were slipped on without much thought, and conversations were quieter, slower, still waking up alongside them. The drive to the airport carried a different kind of energy. The chaos from the night before had settled into something calmer, replaced by anticipation. No one said it out loud, but it was there in the way they looked ahead, in the way they didn't rush.
At security, Diego was the first casualty.
Security Agent: "You can't bring these."
Diego stared at the items in his hands, two oversized bottles of shampoo and lotion.
Diego: "…What do you mean I can't bring these?"
Security Agent: "They exceed the limit."
Diego: "But I need these."
Yuji: "Buy some more on the island."
Diego: "This is a custom brand that you can only order online. The shipping takes 2 weeks!"
Kagura put a hand on his shoulder, smiling: "Say goodbye."
Diego shed a tear.
Security Agent: "…Next."
They made it through after that, though not without a few more minor struggles. Eventually, they found their gate, settled into their seats, and waited for boarding.
The flight itself was calm. Some of them slept almost immediately, worn out from the night before, while others stayed awake, watching the clouds drift by outside the window. Esmarie pressed her face against the glass, completely captivated, while Marlon sat back with his eyes closed, already checked out. Chifuyu leaned back in his seat, arms crossed, eyes half-closed but not fully asleep. Ariel sat beside him, her gaze drifting between the sky and the reflection in the window.
The flight finished in an instant.
The plane landed.
The moment they stepped off, the air felt different. Warmer, lighter, filled with something that immediately set the tone for what was ahead. Hanabi Island stretched out before them, vibrant and alive, carrying an energy that made everything feel just a little more exciting.
Diego stretched as soon as they cleared the exit, rolling his shoulders back: "Yeah… this is gonna be a good trip."
Chifuyu stepped forward slightly, looking out at the island ahead. For a moment, he just took in the view, the atmosphere, the feeling of being somewhere new again. Then he smiled: "Let's enjoy this."
From the sky, the island appeared like a crescent of emerald and gold, floating atop a sea so clear it reflected the heavens perfectly. White waves curled endlessly against coral shores, and green highlands sloped gently upward toward terraced cities that shimmered in every shade of light. Hanabi's beaches stretched for miles, curving with the island's natural flow. The sands ranged from pale gold to soft pearl white, warm beneath the feet even after sunset. Palm trees leaned lazily toward the sea, their shadows painting long arcs across the shoreline as the sun dipped low. Coral reefs shimmered just beneath the surface, alive with color and motion. Even children with borrowed goggles could glimpse schools of fish drifting between the reefs like living jewels. Resorts lined much of the coast, yet none of them felt intrusive. Their design followed the island's natural rhythm, open wooden terraces, flowing fabric canopies, and structures elevated just enough to respect the land beneath them. At night, warm lantern light glowed across balconies as laughter drifted across the waves. At the heart of Hanabi Island was the city. Built upon a web of waterways, it resembled a living tapestry of stone bridges, arched windows, and gentle canals that reflected the sky like liquid mirrors. Gondolas glided silently across the water, their lanterns swaying with soft golden light at dusk. Street musicians played from balconies above the canals, their melodies echoing between buildings in tender spirals. Stores spilled onto stone walkways. Flower boxes clung to every railing. Vines climbed the sides of pastel-colored buildings. Plazas opened wide between towering structures, each filled with open markets, performers, dancers, and artists who worked without fences or formal stages. Food stalls lined the streets, smoke drifting upward in fragrant ribbons of spice and citrus. The city never really slept. Even at dawn, the echoes of last night's songs lingered in the air.
Beyond the resort coast and on the edge of the city stood Hanabi Island's greatest international claim to fame: The Arena District. Here, three colossal stadiums dominated the area, each built to host global tournaments that drew the finest athletes from across Shioto and beyond.
As Odd Jobs spends their time here during the final week of the Golden Festival, Hanabi Island stands bathed in sunlight and celebration, completely unaware that it is about to become the stage where everything begins to shift.
Even paradise casts shadows.
And when the storm finally reaches Hanabi Island…
The world will never look the same again.
