Because of Rio, Link's and Riya's lives took a completely different turn; if not for him, Link would have been crushed under guilt, and even his father Ashtel would have likely suffered a major backlash too.
For Ashtel, being the guardian of the nation was his greatest ambition, and keeping the nation safe was his job.
But if the people of the nation found out that Ashtel's own son was a villain who murdered hundreds of innocent people mercilessly and refused to even apologize for it, then Ashtel's reputation will also be destroyed.
People do not care about how much good you have done in the past and how much good you might be able to do for them in the future.
Just one mistake, just one wrong decision, is enough to turn a hero into a villain.
