But just as quickly, he loosened his grip again, drawing in a deep breath while clutching at his chest, as though steadying something threatening to come undone inside him.
"Your Highness…" Mitchell stepped closer, concern sharpening in his gaze. "Are you alright? Did something hurt? Should I call the doctor?"
"No…" Ryley answered quickly, forcing the breath back under control. "It's nothing. Don't worry about it, Mitch."
He hurried to smooth the crumpled paper, careful despite the tremor in his fingers, then folded it neatly and slipped it beneath the pillow.
Mitchell pressed his lips together and let out a quiet sigh.
He was about to deliver the news from Headquarters to Ryley when the ward door suddenly burst open, snapping both their attention toward it.
Jade hurried inside, breathless, then still managed a quick bow despite the surprise on his face at seeing Mitchell there.
"Y-Your Highness, it's bad!"
