Chapter 40 - The Turning Tides

Spectre:

Using my power, my right hand glowing with enough energy to light up the ocean, I slam my hand of stone down, crushing and burying the man in the sunglasses. Pushing the stone down, I bury him even further down, until I am sure he cannot dig himself out in time. With the snap of my finger, the man in the sunglasses's burial site explodes. Water and earth shoot and fly everywhere.

Raising my hand again, I begin scanning the area for any sign of life, but detect nothing but minor sea life.

"You cannot flee my judgement," I say, slamming my hand down. "You are dead now. That was for Phantom Stranger."

Turning around, my cape snapping in the water, I am about to teleport away, vanish in a green flame. As I put my fingers to my forehead, about to call Gentleman Ghost back and give him his soul back, I feel a sharp pain shoot throughout my head.

"Ahh! Wha--What was that?"

Looking around, I raise my hand again and begin scanning. Swinging my hand from left to right, I feel a sharp rise of power from the man's burial site. Somehow, the energy in my hand, my very own power, bursts, and my hand sets itself on fire.

"Ahh!"

Shaking my hand up and down, my power becomes stable again, and I use it to put out the fire. Watching as my hand heals itself, I feel the ground shaking. Not just the ground, but the whole ocean. It feels like an underwater earthquake. Whatever is happening, it also throws me off my feet. I have to drop to one of my knees just to keep myself from falling over.

"Such power. What is happening?"

Searching, my eyes turn to the man's burial site.

"No! It cannot be him. He is defeated. He is buried alive!"

I try to stand up, but the shaking intensifies, forcing me back down again. As I crouch down, I feel another sharp rise of power. Pure, uncontained power. Following the source, I look down at the ground and see cracks appearing.

Realizing what is happening, I jump into the air, just as the ground erupts and shoots dust and stone everywhere. Flying away, I hear a scream that shakes the whole ocean. A moment later, a hand bursts out from the smoke and grabs my neck. I try to phase through the hand, but my intangibility is not working. As the dust settles, I see the man in sunglasses again, but this time, he is not in his human form.

Taller than before, and with strange white materials covering most of his body, similar to the materials that imprisoned the Lords of Order in Jump City, I look at the man's face, and see dozens of sharp teeth, a white helmet, and a pair of sunglasses. Through cracks in the man's new armor, I see black lines traveling up and down his arms and legs.

Still gripping my throat, I struggle to talk, something I have never experienced before.

"Wha--What power is this?"

The man doesn't answer me. Instead, he unleashes a mighty roar that echoes throughout the ocean. I watch as whales, dolphins, and even crabs miles away hear the roar and flee.

Closing his mouth, the man pulls back his hand before throwing it forward. Punching me in the face, I scream as I am thrown across the water. Shooting faster than a bullet, I slam into the ground. The pain of hitting the rock shoots through my body. It forces out another scream. Sealing my mouth, I force myself to stand back up, but when I do, I see the man flying toward me with his hand before his head. Throwing his fist before, the man slams me back into the ground. He punches me over and over again. Each attack pushes me deeper into the ground. Before I realize it, I am deep inside a hole.

About to punch me again, the man stops suddenly. Through a swollen eye, I see the man grabbing his hand. Shaking and throwing himself against the wall, the man looks at me before swimming back up. As he swims, the man punches the wall. Rocks begin to break off and fall onto me. The last thing I see before I am buried alive is the man as he grabs his head again.

Gentleman Ghost:

Watching as my ghostly bullets hit Deadman and explode, purple flames covering the ocean floor, I smile, spin my dual pistols, and slide them back into the holsters.

"And here I was expecting a challenge," I say, slamming my cane down and tipping my top hat. "Now, for the matter of my payment? Where is that ghoul, Spectre, with my new body?"

As I turn and start walking away, I begin hearing footsteps.

"What?"

Turning around, I see the dead man charging toward me. Screaming as he lunges toward me, I raise my cane. About to set the bastard on fire, Deadman kicks my cane.

"Ahhh," I scream, stepping back and watching as my flame shoots above us. While I regain my footing, Deadman grabs my hand and ties a strange-looking ruby to my wrist. Swinging my cane down, Deadman jumps back and dodges it. Once there is distance between us, I look at the ruby.

"And may I ask what this is? A sort of treasure for me? Thank you. I will be sure to sell it when I collect my new body."

"A new body, uh," Deadman says, smiling. "Well, in that case."

Deadman steps toward me while pulling back his hand. I swing my cane, expecting to hit him, but instead, he walks right through my attack.

"Heavens," I shout before Deadman grabs the ruby and then punches me.

"Ahhh!"

Stumbling back, I switch my cane for my handgun again. Pulling the trigger, Deadman jumps right through me, his body passing through mine as I shoot and hit the empty water in front of me.

"That is not possible," I say, stepping back. "We ghosts cannot phase through each other!"

I turn around only to see the knuckles of Deadman's fist as they hit my face again.

"Ahhh!"

Stumbling back again, I watch as Deadman follows me, his grip still on the ruby. Grabbing my shoulder and pushing me down, Deadman raises his knee and slams it into my head. Falling back and hitting the ground, I try to phase through it, but cannot.

"What, what happened to my powers? Why can I not disappear?"

I try to phase through the ground, but no matter what, I do not. Instead, I just scratch the rocks I am lying on.

"What magic is this? What socery is this--"

As I look around, I see Deadman still gripping the ruby.

"It was that accursed ruby," I shout.

"Took you long enough to figure it out," Deadman says. I look up to see the bottom of Deadman's shoes before it comes down.

Deadman:

Stomping on Gentleman Ghost's solid face and knocking him out, I untie the gemstone, gripping it tightly. My body becomes tangible. When it fully solidifies, I reach into my pocket and pull the teleporter out. Placing it on the ocean ground, I input Atlantis's location on the keypad and step back. A blue and white beam shoots into the air, and a portal appears. Seeing the golden building with glass walls, I waste no time and leap through.

Green Arrow:

Screaming as Black Manta's submarine rams into the Seahorse, I'm thrown to the side and hit my head against the window. Moaning as I shake my head and regain my vision, I look outside and see Black Manta firing more missiles at me.

"Computer," I shout. "Or Seahorse. Activate all offensive things. Now!"

"Understood," the Seahorse computer replies. I then watch as literally hundreds, maybe even thousands, of secret panels open up. Rocket launchers, laser rifles, and other launchers all pop up.

"....Okay. That is...a lot of.....weapons. Kind of an overkill."

Without me saying anything, everything starts firing at once. Rockets shoot out in all directions. Laser rifles fire bright red beams. The launchers begin throwing out shining blue orbs. Still watching from inside as the Seahorse destroys mountains and the floor, I see one of the blue orbs flying toward Black Manta's sub. The second it touches, the orb explodes, then releases a blinding blue light.

"Ouch!"

I rub my eyes and slowly regain my vision. Once I can see again, I look out and see Black Manta's sub sinking toward the floor. Still watching as rockets and laser beams hit it, I can't understand why Manta isn't driving away or firing back until I see another blue orb.

"Not this time!"

I cover my eyes just in time to avoid going blind again. The lightbulb turns on above my head when I finally realize something.

"Those orbs must be EMP bombs. I really should've read that manual more."
