Chapter 12 - Trouble

Winter walked right up to him with Mandy and Layla in tow. "Hello, trouble." Jax, unable to hold his surprise, glanced between all of them. "I'm not liking the atmosphere." His eyes narrowed on Winter, "What are you up to?" Mandy chimed in, "She's started asking questions about the detention dungeon. I don't even know how she heard about that horrid place." Jax gulped guiltily. Layla pointed at him, "This would be how she heard." Jax smiled lopsidedly, tugging on the collar of his shirt "I was just telling her about our different tourist attractions. The detention dungeon was just a feature I mentioned in passing. I didn't know she'd be interested in it." Mandy rolled her eyes, "Have you met Winter? She documents every word she hears." Jax scratched the back of his head, "Yeah I noticed." Winter glanced between all of them noting their new forming habit of talking about her while she's standing among them and smiled, "It's not Jax's fault. It was inevitable that I would find out about it. Remember? I'm going to uncover every secret this place has." Jax sighed, relieved that the fingers were no longer pointing at him. "If I'm going to do that, I need to start looking," Winter placed her hands on her hips and faced towards Jax, "That being said, first thing on my scavenger hunt is trouble. And lucky me, here you are." Jax rose his eyebrow, then smirked. "You know, that nickname is starting to grow on me." Winter gave him a sidelong glance, "I thought it might." Jax leaned on her. Winter pushed him off gently and he groaned. "Mandy and Layla told me they've never been in enough trouble to warrant them a visit to the detention dungeon." They shared a look. Winter crossed her arms over her chest, "The only person I know who has been there, is you. So I need your help." Jax smiled broadly, "Just the words I wanted to hear. What can I do?" Winter surveyed their surroundings, "Just tell me what you got in trouble for." Jax chuckled nervously. Winter twisted the ring on her right hand, "What is it?" "It's not that simple." "What do you mean? Just tell me what it is that got you thrown in the dungeon." Jax scratched the back of his head, "Well, the thing is," He sighed. "I don't know." Winter shut her eyes, "You don't know what you did to get detention?" Jax rose his head, "Not a clue." Winter twisted her ring again, "Well there goes that lead." Layla scoffed, relaxing a bit. Winter laughed, "I guess I'm going to have to make my own trouble." Layla tensed again, "Winter, the detention dungeon is really despicable." "Which is exactly why I have to find out the story behind it." Layla gave up on trying to convince her, "Yeah. If you want my help you got it, but I don't like the rumors we hear about that place."

Mandy placed her head on Winter's shoulder, "Hey Jax. Wasn't Lucas suppose to come today?" Instinctively, Jax looked around, "Yeah. I think he said he would be coming later." Winter kept fumbling with her ring as the bell rang. "Looks like we have to go to class." Winter said, "I'm skipping." Jax's jaw went slack, "Skipping?" Winter's eyebrow rose, "That's what I said." Mandy tugged at Jax's arm, "She's going to look for trouble." Jax followed Mandy, glancing behind at Winter as she waved tauntingly. Layla stood between them, "If you need us just call." She shook her phone in her hand. Layla, seemingly satisfied, trailed after Mandy and Jax.

After everyone had gone to class, Winter strolled through the hallways with her hands in her pockets, keeping her eyes open for anything out of place. Everything well maintained. Winter noticed Sam walking to the library and pondered the reason for his fascination. Winter actively attempted to mesh into her surroundings while following Sam. Upon entering the library, a heartbeat after Sam, she saw him stalk into one of the rows of bookshelves. Staying hidden, Winter caught the interaction between Sam and a tall boy with dirty blonde hair. She squinted and focused on the boy she didn't recognize, noting that his eyes were a calm grey. Winter couldn't quite hear the conversation going on between the boy and Sam but based off the tension, it didn't seem like a pleasant one. Winter studied their body language. They seemed close with each other. Oddly close. As though something dark had forged the bond between them. A bond that was now unbreakable. The grey eyed boy scanned the area, suspicious, before resuming his hushed conversation with Sam. Winter took that as a sign that whatever they were talking about was meant to be kept under tight wraps, and if they found out she was spying, their retribution would be highly inconvenient for her. She tiptoed out of the library and tied up her hair, her resolve stronger than before. It was as though the school was made for her, a playground of secrets and lies.
