To escape the shadow of Lorenzo Diaz and ensure his safety, Elizabeth transferred her medical internship to a distant municipal hospital. She knew her father's private eyes were tailing her, instructed to report any contact with the penniless doctor. She could not afford to put Lorenzo in harm's way, nor could she risk involving Venus; her best friend's temper would only spark a war with her family. Elizabeth chose to carry the heavy burden alone.
"How did the transfer paperwork go?" Anton asked, looking up as she pushed through the front door carrying a heavy cardboard box filled with her office supplies.
He immediately stepped forward, taking the box from her arms and setting it on the entryway table before handing her a cold glass of water.
"It went smoothly," Elizabeth replied, taking a slow sip as she unbuttoned her wool coat and hung it on the rack. "My clinical rotations start the day after tomorrow. How was your work schedule today?"
