The first place was a goblin village. It burned quietly under the midday sun. That part surprised me more than it should have.
I expected screaming. I expected the messy chaos of a raid—the kind I'd lived through on both sides of an iron edge more times than I cared to count across my arena days and my time as a human's mercenary slave.
What I got instead was a strange, focused silence.
My riders moved fast and efficient through the outer huts, torching supply stores and grain bins rather than wasting time on the weak.
Those were the Chieftain's orders.
My people followed orders, even when the smell of ash had their blood up and the snow beneath our boots was turning black.
The first goblin warrior who came at me died before I even noticed my hands moving.
