The strike to Akira's throat hadn't been intended to snap his neck. It had been something far more surgical.
As Akira collapsed onto the black mud, his vision tunnelling into pitch, he didn't feel the painless fade of death. Instead, a white-hot spike of agony detonated directly in his chest.
His shirt tore open under the heat. Straining against his skin, black ink flared to life across his chest, radiating outward in scorched, spiderwebbing lines. It was the Infernal Extraction Seal—Konoha's brutal, classified suicide mark implanted in high-risk scout squads. Designed to burn a shinobi's chakra, blood, and vital organs into a flash-fire blast upon death, it ensured no corpse or intelligence ever fell into enemy hands.
Before Orochimaru struck, Akira had spat out the epithet "Demon of Konoha" as a final, mocking bit of last-second bravado, completely unaware that the disguised Grass-nin facing him was actually Konoha's most notorious missing-nin. That foolish attempt at defiance handed Orochimaru the ultimate punchline. Recognising the suicide seal instantly, the Sannin didn't trigger a clean explosion; instead, he distorted the formula with a flick of his chakra-coated fingers. He twisted the ink into a grotesque, three-magatama pattern that pulsed with a sickening purple glow, delaying the detonation into a slow, agonising burn designed to lure a specific Konoha proctor straight into the blast radius.
Worse still, Orochimaru had converted the seal into a torturous trap.
"Hold on! Kid, stay with me!"
A harsh, frantic voice broke through the haze of Akira's fading consciousness. Hands slammed onto his shoulders, trying to hold him down as his back arched off the muddy ground in a violent convulsion.
Mitarashi Anko had arrived too late for the fight, but the abnormal chakra flare had drawn her straight to the clearing. Now, the special jonin knelt over Akira, her coat splattered with swamp water, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at the burning seal on his chest.
"Shit! Shit!" Anko cursed, her hands glowing with green medical chakra as she tried to force her energy into his system to stabilise his heart.
The moment her chakra touched his skin, the manipulated seal reacted.
FLARE.
Akira let out a strangled, blood-curdling scream. The veins across his neck, face, and arms swelled, turning a bright, incandescent orange beneath his skin as his entire chakra network began to liquefy into raw heat. The temperature in the immediate clearing spiked so fast the surrounding mud hissed, turning to dry steam.
"It's a delayed trap... he altered the Konoha suicide seal!" Anko realized, her voice shaking with rage and disgust. "That bastard... he used this kid as a bait bomb for me!"
She grabbed her kunai, preparing to cut the primary chakra pathways in Akira's chest to stop the chain reaction, but the moment her fingers brushed the ink, an agonising shockwave threw her back into the roots.
The seal was consuming Akira's chakra from the inside out, accumulating a dense, pressurised core of fire in his chest. Within ninety seconds, the pressure would reach critical mass, vaporising Akira and incinerating everything within a fifty-meter radius—including Anko.
"Run..." Akira choked out through shattered teeth, his lungs burning with ash. His hands clawed mindlessly at the earth, his adult mind screaming against the unspeakable torture of his own flesh turning to magma.
"Proctor... run..."
Anko stared at the dying boy. She saw the three-magatama mark pulsing like a rhythmic, toxic heartbeat on his chest. It was Orochimaru's signature. A direct message to her:
Look at what I can do to your village's children, and you cannot stop it.
"Shut up," Anko snarled, her teeth bared, tears of frustration mixing with the soot on her cheeks.
"I'm not letting him kill another one!"
She knew the math. Standard sealing techniques would break against Orochimaru's modified formula. Medical jutsu was just feeding fuel to the fire. There was only one source of chakra dense and volatile enough to forcibly overwrite a corrupted Sannin seal.
Anko reached up to her left neck, trembling fingers pulling back the collar of her mesh shirt.
Beneath it lay her own branded curse mark—suppressed, dormant, and sealed away by the Third Hokage's Fūja Hōin.
"You want a spectacle, you old snake?" Anko whispered bitterly.
She slammed her thumbs into her neck, driving her own chakra backward into her suppressed seal.
~CRACK.
The black markings on her neck flared violently, uncoiling like black vipers down her shoulder and across her face. Anko gasped as the cold, corrupting, senjutsu-infused chakra of Orochimaru flooded her veins, turning her eyes a terrifying, vertically-slitted yellow.
Overpowered by the raw, sinister resonance of the Sannin's own curse mark, Anko slammed both of her blackened, chakra-dripping palms directly onto Akira's chest.
"Heavenly Curse Overlay!" she roared.
The cold, malevolent senjutsu chakra slammed into the raging inferno inside Akira's body like a tidal wave of liquid nitrogen. The two opposing forces clashed inside Akira's chest bone with a sickening crunch. The orange, scorching veins across his skin flickered, turned dark purple, and then snapped back into black lines as Anko forcibly dragged the exploding chakra back into a stable containment loop.
Akira's body went rigid. The heat evaporated, replaced by a sudden, bone-chilling frost that spread across his chest as the seal neutralised.
With a final, ragged gasp, Akira collapsed back onto the mud, his breathing shallow, his chest scarred with a blackened, fused mark that now mirrored Anko's own.
Anko fell forward onto her knees beside him, panting heavily as the black markings on her own skin slowly retreated into her neck, leaving her exhausted and shuddering.
She looked down at the unconscious civilian Genin, wiping a trail of dark blood from her nose.
"You survived..." Anko muttered, her voice trembling as she checked his faint, steady pulse.
"You actually survived him..."
Weeks later, the dust settled.
Akira stood in a corner of the crowded arena under the blinding midday sun, surrounded by the cheering crowds of the Chūnin Exam Finals. The memory of dying in the Forest of Death—and the strange, dual-consciousness convergence of his past civilian life fusing with his shinobi training—was a secret locked deep within his mind.
He wore high-collared bandages beneath his jacket, covering the complex, hybrid seal carved on his chest. The corrupted combination of Konoha's suicide formula and Anko's senjutsu chakra hadn't killed him; it had fundamentally altered his chakra pathways. His control was now freakishly sharp, his physical endurance far beyond a normal eighteen-year-old, and a strange, hot-and-cold residue of senjutsu hummed beneath his skin whenever he drew upon his reserves.
Up in the proctor box, Anko stood leaning against the railing, her eyes fixed entirely on Akira.
She knew the secret of what resided in his chest.
