Chapter 35 - Before the Storm (Part 2)

The stale air of the tunnel wrapped around Arthur as he lowered himself onto the damp stone floor.

Collins landed beside him, his lantern casting long shadows across the narrow passage.

Arthur immediately crouched.

The footprints were still there.

One set belonged to Evelyn.

The other belonged to the man who had taken her out of the apartment.

Both disappeared into the darkness ahead.

"They're fresh," Collins whispered.

Arthur nodded.

"Minutes old."

He raised the lantern slightly.

"No one touches anything."

The tunnel itself was evidence now.

---

The old passage twisted beneath the streets of London like a forgotten artery.

Coal dust still clung to sections of the walls, but farther ahead the bricks became cleaner.

Someone maintained this place.

Not recently.

Regularly.

Arthur stopped.

His lantern settled on a damp patch of ground.

"There."

Collins crouched beside him.

The footprints suddenly split apart.

Evelyn's moved to the left.

The larger footprints drifted to the right.

Only for two steps.

Then they came together again.

Collins frowned.

"Why separate?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

He studied the walls instead.

The answer wasn't on the ground.

It was above it.

A rusted iron support beam leaned dangerously over the passage.

Arthur smiled faintly.

"He moved her."

"What?"

"The beam."

"He stepped away from it..."

"...then guided her around."

Collins looked again.

The footprints suddenly made sense.

Arthur stood.

"He notices everything."

---

Several hundred feet ahead...

Alexander paused beside an ancient brick archway.

He hadn't heard Arthur.

Not yet.

But he knew someone else had entered the tunnels.

The silence had changed.

Behind them...

The Syndicate.

Farther back...

Someone else.

He couldn't identify which.

Only that the rhythm was different.

Evelyn noticed him listening again.

"What is it?"

"We're no longer alone."

"You mean the men following us?"

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

"Someone else entered after them."

She instinctively reached for her revolver.

"The police?"

"I don't know."

It was the truth.

---

Arthur continued forward.

The tunnel widened into a circular maintenance chamber where four different passages met.

He slowly turned his lantern.

Four choices.

No obvious answer.

Collins sighed.

"We've lost them."

Arthur remained silent.

He walked to the centre of the chamber.

Closed his eyes.

Then slowly opened them again.

"The water."

Collins looked confused.

"What about it?"

Arthur pointed towards the shallow stream running along the floor.

"It doesn't flow equally."

One tunnel carried more water than the others.

Another...

Had almost none.

Arthur crouched.

Fresh footprints crossed the dry passage.

Not the wet one.

"They avoided the water."

"Why?"

Arthur answered without looking up.

"Because water remembers."

Collins blinked.

Arthur smiled.

"Mud keeps footprints."

"They knew that."

He stood.

"This way."

---

Farther ahead...

The older Syndicate operative reached the same junction.

He looked at the four passages.

Then smiled.

"He found it."

The younger man frowned.

"Who?"

"The detective."

"You've met him before?"

"No."

"But I've read his work."

The younger operative looked puzzled.

"We're still following the others."

The older man folded his map.

"No."

"Our orders have changed."

"What orders?"

The older man looked back the way they had come.

"If Arthur Delbury reaches the wrong place today..."

"...everything changes."

For the first time...

He wasn't thinking about Evelyn.

Or Alexander.

He was thinking about the detective.

---

Alexander stopped so suddenly that Evelyn almost walked into him.

Ahead...

An old iron gate blocked the passage.

Not locked.

Closed.

Fresh scratches marked the hinges.

Someone had shut it only moments ago.

Alexander examined it carefully.

No trap.

No explosives.

No tripwire.

Just...

A message.

Scratched into the rust with something sharp.

A single word.

LATE

Evelyn stepped closer.

"What does it mean?"

Alexander ran his fingers across the fresh marks.

"They knew we'd come."

"Who?"

He looked beyond the gate into the darkness.

"I don't know."

"But whoever closed this..."

"...wanted us to know we were already behind."

---

Arthur reached the same junction less than five minutes later.

He stopped.

His lantern swept slowly across the walls.

One passage.

Two.

Three.

Then the fourth.

His eyes narrowed.

There...

On the brickwork beside the entrance...

Someone had rested a gloved hand against the wall.

A faint smear of soot remained.

Fresh.

Arthur touched it carefully.

Still dry.

"They came through here."

Collins raised his lantern.

"Can you tell how long ago?"

Arthur looked into the darkness.

"Not long."

He took another step.

Then froze.

A distant metallic sound echoed through the tunnel.

An iron gate...

Closing.

Arthur and Collins exchanged a look.

Without another word...

Both detectives broke into a run.

Neither of them knew...

That less than a hundred yards ahead...

Alexander Vale and Evelyn Ashcombe were already standing before that very gate.

And on the other side of it...

Someone had deliberately left behind the first sign that this underground maze held secrets older than Henry Whitlock's investigation.
