When Alok’s friend Kael is consumed by the void, Alok discovers he can bridge the gap between energy and nothingness, resulting in a permanent, matte-grey "scar" on his arm that acts as a manual interface with the city’s code. ​As the Spire initiates "Abrasive Venting"—a genocidal protocol to purge the Lower District to stabilize the upper reaches—Alok, Arya, and a disgraced Scripter named Julian subvert the city’s physics.
