Long before Ilyan Corven was born, humanity nearly destroyed itself in the **Destiny War**. At its center were three legendary machines known as **Seraphs**, Frames built from a mysterious material no one has ever been able to reproduce. Their pilots changed the course of the war, but the Seraphs ultimately consumed them, and all three vanished before the conflict ended. What remained was a wounded Earth, shattered colonies, and a generation terrified of what humanity had become. In the aftermath, new treaties banned nuclear weapons, further Seraph development, human weapon experimentation, and eventually the construction of new combat Frames. Earth rebuilt beneath the newly formed **Solar Federation**, whose leaders believed humanity could survive only by remaining united. But as decades passed and entire generations were born in space, that unity began to feel more like ownership. Colonies became nations. Earth recovered. The Federation began calling for humanity to return home, while spaceborn societies increasingly answered that space was already their home. That divide became the **Horizon War**. The **Ardent Coalition** emerged to defend the sovereignty of the spaceborn nations, while the Federation fought to keep humanity from fracturing again. Old treaties collapsed, combat Frames returned to the battlefield, and another generation inherited a war built from memories and grievances older than they were. Fourteen-year-old **Ilyan Corven** grows up inside that world without believing he has much to do with it. He is far more interested in particle science than soldiers or Frames, and his talent earns him a place among five gifted students invited aboard the Federation’s newest experimental command carrier, **Black Star**. He is supposed to study its technology. Instead, **Nexus steals the ship**. Nexus is barely forty people—a scattered family of refugees, deserters, mechanics, medics, and survivors who intervene wherever the war has abandoned civilians. With Federation forces closing in and their only exceptional pilot badly wounded, Ilyan is forced into **Radian**, an unfinished prototype Frame built around an experimental particle-distribution system. He has never piloted a Frame before. Yet Radian moves as though it has been waiting for him. His first battle reveals a talent no fourteen-year-old should possess, and his first kill leaves him determined never to enter the cockpit again. But Black Star is damaged, its particle reserves are limited, the Federation wants its stolen weapon back, and Nexus is about to be dragged into a conflict between the independent cities of **Veyra and Caldris** that will make their name known across the Solar System. A war that began generations before Ilyan was born has finally reached him. And before it is over, he will have to decide whether he can remain only a boy who understands machines—or become the pilot everyone around him is beginning to believe he was meant to be.
