IF I EVER ASKED
In high school, Ethan made one
mistake.
He confessed to a girl he liked.
The rejection that followed was embarrassing enough to burn a rule into his mind forever:
He would never confess to a girl again.
If someone liked him, they would have to say it first.
Now in college, Ethan has mastered the art of looking completely nonchalant. Quiet. Hard to read. The kind of guy who rarely starts conversations—especially with girls.
Which is strange, considering he’s actually pretty good-looking. Not in a flashy, model-on-a-billboard kind of way, but enough that people notice. Enough that girls sometimes wonder about him.
But Ethan rarely gives them anything to work with.
Around girls, he keeps his distance. Calm. Careful. Occasionally awkward when he tries a little too hard to act like he doesn’t care.
Around his friends, though, it’s a completely different story.
With the guys, Ethan is loud, sarcastic, annoying, playful, and sometimes completely ridiculous. The quiet, mysterious guy everyone else sees disappears the moment he’s comfortable.
Most people think they understand Ethan.
They really don’t.
Because behind the calm expression and the nonchalant act is someone trying very hard not to repeat the one mistake he swore he’d never make again.
