"This is for you," Bertha's old grandmother threw bread and ham wrapped in clear plastic, the old woman immediately left after seeing James nimbly catch the bread she threw at him, it was winter, not much can be done in difficult situations like this.
Soviet is in a state of chaos due to the revolution, and government policies have been making things difficult. While out there human life is becoming more violent. James opened the package that was thrown by Bertha's grandmother, and immediately devoured it. The 10 year old boy's stomach rumbled.

His body was still shaking because of the cold winter air while other vibrations also came from within his body. Afraid of what punishment he would get later. He had left the house for only 10 minutes, running out after seeing his stepfather hit his mother.
